ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE 5100 kW LE 5100 kW - Electric locomotive with static converter for auxiliary services Electric locomotive LE 5100 kW it has been in use for more than 40 years. However this towing platform for heavy trains could have been improved. Thus, modernization's main objective was to improve the reliability and the operation of the blocks for auxiliary services. It has been installed a modular static converter, an air production system with screw compressor, pantograph and new circuit breaker, silicon insulators 25 kV, without maintenance. The parameters of the locomotive are controlled by a central CPU unit throught a display, and the informations appear on the 2 dispalys from the driver cabs. For the maintenance, defaults are stored. LE 5100 kW - Electric locomotive with static converter for auxiliary services

Electric locomotive LE 5100 kW it has been in use for more than 40 years. However this towing platform for

heavy trains could have been improved. Thus, modernization's main objective was to improve the reliability

and the operation of the blocks for auxiliary services. It has been installed a modular static converter, an air

High voltage circuits

PE type pantographs which exercise a variable pressure on the contact wire depending on the height of the catenary towards the head of the rail were replaced by WBL85 pantographs with constant pressure on the contact wire, in order to ensure the best possible quality of the voltage withdrawn from the catenary.

Support insulators of the pantographs, of the 25kV bars and the bushing are now silicone isolated type, without maintenance. The main switch is BVAC type and ensures a secure switching on-switching off cycle. The Polim s28 surge arrester has silicone insulator and protects the primary of the main transformer against overvoltages induced by catenary circuit or discharges in the atmosphere.

If for the old locomotive voltage adjustement for the traction engines was made by a graduator driven by a specialized DC motor, now the graduator is driven by a three-phase asynchronous motor for general use, powered by a static converter, simplifying the control scheme.

Auxiliary servicesThree phase consumers (the drive motor of the main compressor, the forced ventilation groups, the oil pump etc.) are now benefiting of a symmetrical supply, by implementing a modul block with four static converters instead of the asymmetric three-phase system which was obtained artificially with the help of capacitors. The start for these consumers is now linearly without power or mechanical shocks, in order to improve the overall reliability of the auxiliary services.

Instead of the two reciprocating compressors, a single screw compressor was mounted with obvious advantages. For redundance, three ventilators were mounted instead of the only T12 ventilator of the tank oil cooler of the main transformer. Condensed water purging from the pneumatic installation is now automatically, using automatic purges equipped with heating system.

Control systemTwo displays from the driving cabs indicate for the driver the parameters of the locomotive. Not respecting the nominal parameters, but also failures are stored and can be downloaded to facilitate maintenance. S7 block was rearranged and equipped with robust circuit elements with standardized construction. In the driving cab the driver commands the steps of the graduator by using a joystick type control system. The desktop driver was modernized, all the elements are now at the reach of the driver and placed in his visual field.
