Superb holding powerElectrak actuators operate equally wellunder tension or compression loads. Theywill hold a load indefinitely without power,and can be directly interfaced to aprogrammable controller or otherelectronic control device.

Electrak design stylesElectrak actuators are available in loadranges from 25 to 1500 pounds, strokelengths from 2 to 24 inches andoperating voltages of 12 and 24 VDCand 115 and 230 VAC. Individual modelsoffer additional features to meet a varietyof design needs.

Electrak E050 seriesThe Electrak 050 is the new quiet, lowcost DC actuator that can push or pullup to 112 lb. Available in 12 or 24 VDCmodels with built in limit switches andstroke lengths to 8 inches. A control withhand held pendant is available for 115VAC applications.

Electrak E150 seriesThe Electrak 150 actuator is alightweight, low cost actuator with a loadrating up to 450 lb. Available in 12, 24,or 36 VDC models and a control withpendant is available for 115 VACoperation. Stroke lengths to 16 inchesand optional adjustable end of strokelimit switches or feedback potentiometer.Note: Max stroke for pot unit is 14".

Electrak seriesThe rest of the Electrak family includescompact models with load rangesbeginning at 25 pounds up to heavy dutyactuators with load capability up to 1500* pounds. There are AC and DCmodels and also controls to enable the24 VDC actuators to operate on 115VAC.

VersatileMotors used on Warner linear actuatorsutilize thermal switches in their windings toshut the actuator off in case ofoverheating. Reset is automatic after themotor has cooled. A standard overloadclutch automatically ratchets if the load istoo great or at the end of a stroke. Again,reset is automatic upon load reduction ordirection reversal. With their compact size,Warner linear actuators can be located inconfined areas, yet will move loads from25 to 1500* pounds. Linear actuators willhold their loads with no power draw.Stroke lengths of 1 to 24 inches areavailable and speeds are as high as twoinches per second. Weatherproofingmakes these actuators ideal for use onoutdoor equipment. Actuators are easy toapply and easy to install and offeradvantages over mechanical and hydraulicsystems in many linear motionapplications. Lead screw drive system

Electrak 1, 2, 050 and 150 models featureacme screws which will not backdrivewhen the power is off. Electrak 5, 10, 100and 205 series actuators are equippedwith highly efficient and accurate WarnerLinear ball bearing screws. A load holdingbrake keeps the load in position whenpower is off.

Electrak E050 seriesThe Electrak E050 actuator is the newcompact, quiet, low priced actuatorsuitable for a variety of markets andapplications. This feature packedactuator has a very short retractedlength for applications where spaceis a premium:

• It is designed to be quiet for medicalor office applications.

• It has built in limit switches for end ofstroke protection and a clutch for midstroke protection.

• The colors are molded into the plasticto both eliminate the need for paintand touchup of scratches.

• The actuator has a breather tube inthe wiring harness to allow theactuator to operate without drawingwater through the seals on the covertube.

• It is available with a control andpendant for one or two actuators.

The entire actuator has been designedfor ease of installation, light weight, quietoperation, no maintenance and low cost.

Electrak E150 seriesThe Electrak 150 is the first of a newseries of low priced, quiet actuators withdifferent load and speed ranges.

Take time to look through the cutawaydrawing to see what makes this actuatordifferent. The optional limit switches aredesigned to operate with fewer parts. Theplastic cover is designed to be recyclable.The actuator has a breather tube in thewiring harness to allow the actuator tooperate without drawing water throughthe seals on the cover tube. The colorsare molded into the plastic to botheliminate the need for paint and touchupof scratches. The anodized aluminumcover tube is corrosion resistant and alsohides scratches. The extension tube isstainless steel and the front and rearadapters are zinc die castings forcorrosion resistance. All of the thrust isresolved through the screw with theplastic housing providing environmentalprotection but carrying no load. The entireactuator has been created for ease ofinstallation, quiet operation, nomaintenance, light weight, and low cost.

An inside look at the Electrak 205 . . .This top of the line actuator features a ball bearinglead screw for maximum reliability, accuracy andlong life. Control featuresWarner Linear offers a choicein actuator controls.Whether you plan to operate from asimple pushbutton or a programmablecontroller, the MCS-2000 series controlsmake your system design easy to installand simple to operate. They are housed inrugged NEMA 1 enclosures, and featuredynamic braking (DC actuators only),emergency stop/off pushbutton, power onindicator, and percent of stroke meter (forfeedback actuators only) for preciseposition feedback. Multiple steppositioning is available for easy integrationwith programmable controller systems andintegral limit switches for automatic controlof extend-retract cycles. All MCS-2000series controls are PC compatible andfeature easy-to-use terminal strips forinput and output wiring.

Applications

The variety of load ranges, sizes, andvoltages of the Electrak actuators providesfor a wide range of applications fromboats to sweepers to van to exerciseequipment to diverting products onconveyor lines.

Some of the advantages of electricactuators are:

Lift tables

Electrak actuators work just as well on elevatorplatform or scissor lift tables. The materials can beraised and lowered to reach any required height andthe load is held in position even when the power is off.

Towing hitch

An actuator attached to a tow barprovides effortless raising andlowering of even the heaviest loadfor quick alignment and hitching.

Power boats and sailing crafts

Sailboat applications include boom control whenraising or lowering the mainsail and downhaulcontrol. Actuators are useful for raising andlowering hatch covers and operating windowsand positioning seats all with push-button ease.Actuators are available with CE listing.

Barrier and Swing gates

Electrak self-contained,weatherproof actuatorsimprove the reliability ofvarious gate styles byreplacing complex operatingmechanisms. No separatemotor, gearbox, belt, limitswitches, belts or chains toslip or break.

Floor Sweeper/Scrubber

Electrak actuators apply the downforceon the squeegee to pick up the waterduring cleaning.

Bus and van doors

Compact actuators fitabove doors and open or closewith the flick of a switch. Actuatorsare also used to lower stairs and extendflashing “STOP” signs on school buses.

Conveyor gate diverter

An Electrak actuator extends theconveyor gate to route boxes to thedesired work station. Easily interfacedwith Warner Electric Photoscannersor other electrical switching devices.

Transmission shift

Actuators provide “shift by wire”instead of cumbersomemechanical linkages, bindingcables or messy hydraulics.Feedback, built into the actuator,can be used to make multiplestep points or shift positions.

Wheelchair lift

Actuators are used for wheelchair lifts,positioning and locking as well as for parkingbrake engagement and opening and closingdoors and vents. With infra-red remotecontrols, doors and lifts can be operated asthe wheelchair approaches the van providingincreased security and weather protection.

Sprayer booms and heads

The load limiting clutch preventsdamage to the actuator or equipmentwhen extending or retracting the spraybooms. Sprayer nozzles can beprecisely positioned.

Wheelchair

Actuators are used to tilt and recline thewheelchair and also to raise and lower eachleg support.

Selection procedureStep 1. Determine load/speedSelect the actuator which has the optimum load and extensionspeed best suited for yourapplication. See the followingspecification pages.

Step 2. Compare life andduty cycleCompare actuatorperformance based on life vs.load and duty cycle vs. loadcurves provided for eachElectrak actuator.

Step 3. Select lengthChoose the desired strokelength from the QuickSelection Guide on pages 8-9or from the Electrakspecifications pages 10-27.

Step 4. Verify designconsiderationsDuty Cycle. At full load capacity,all Electrak actuators have a25% duty cycle. Duty cycle is theamount of “on time” vs. “cooling time.” For example, the 25%duty cycle actuator will run 15 seconds and needs 45 secondsrest for a 1 minute total cycle time.

Side loading and shock loading restrictions. Side loading theactuator impairs actuator performance and will dramaticallyreduce life. Side loading and cantilever mounting should alwaysbe eliminated through proper machine design practices.Although actuators can withstand slight shock loads, it isrecommended that shock loading be avoided as much aspossible.

Mounting. Basically, two mounting styles are available. Be surethat the selected actuator’s mounting configuration is adaptiveto the application.

ControlsDF14 controls operate one or two Electrak 150 actuators. Available with one or two 24VDC outputs with a handset to manually control bi-directional motion on each of thecontrol outputs. Each actuator can be operated independently and sequentially but notsimultaneously. It has quick disconnect sockets for the handset, cable adapters for 5,10 and 15 foot lengths to connect to each actuator. For details see page 30.

Compact, low costplastic housingThe Electrak 150 is the first of a newseries of low priced, quiet actuators withdifferent load and speed ranges.

Take time to look through the cutawaydrawing on page 4 to see what makesthis actuator different. The optional limitswitches are designed to operate withfewer parts. The plastic cover is designedto be recyclable. The actuator has abreather tube in the wiring harness toallow the actuator to operate withoutdrawing water through the seals on thecover tube. The colors are molded into theplastic to both eliminate the need for paintand touchup of scratches. The anodizedaluminum cover tube is corrosion resistantand also hides scratches. The extensiontube is stainless steel and the front andrear adapters are zinc die castings forcorrosion resistance. All of the thrust isresolved through the screw with theplastic housing providing environmentalprotection but carrying no load. The entireactuator has been created for ease ofinstallation, quiet operation, nomaintenance, light weight, and low cost.

Extended life, compact DC actuatorsThis is a long life version of the Electrak 1actuator with fixed mechanical limitswitches and an 80,000+ cycle capacity –more than double the life of the standardElectrak 1 actuator. The limit switchescontrol the power to the motor directly tostop the actuator at the end of stroke anddo not require power switching relays.

The performance of the actuator isidentical to the standard Electrak 1. It iscompletely self-contained and sealed forindoor and outdoor use and fits into smallareas without sacrificing power orreliability. The load/length configurationsavailable cover a diverse range ofintermittent duty applications requiringlifting, positioning, sorting, opening,clamping and adjusting.

Physically the only difference is the longlife unit is 0.68" taller to accommodate thefixed limit switches. The long life actuatoris available in 12 or 24 VDC version, 25and 75 lb. load ranges, and with 2, 4 and6 inch stroke lengths. 24 volt versions arecompatible with the MCS 2005 and 2006Electrak controls.

Economical, generalpurpose DC actuatorThe Electrak 2 linear actuator is aneconomical model designed for relativelylight load applications. It incorporatesmost of the features found in higherpriced models, but utilizes a heavy dutyacme screw drive system.

The Acme screw is self-locking andtherefore does not need a brake toprevent backdriving the load.

A built in overload clutch slips when thefactory-set load limit is exceeded.

The 12 VDC motor is weather-protectedand ideally suited for battery poweredapplications such as custom vans,garden tractors, or emergency powersupplies. The motor also has built inthermal switches which prevent themotor from overheating due to too high a duty cycle.

General purpose AC actuatorThe Electrak 5 is designed for intermittentduty applications and provides maximumthrust of 500 pounds. or 1000 pounds.Since it is powered by 115 VAC or 230VAC, the Electrak 5 actuator can be easilywired and can be controlled by a simplepushbutton switch or relay for remotecontrol of hard-to-reach operations suchas opening or closing an overheadwindow.

Consisting of an AC motor, gear train andball bearing screw drive system, Electrak5 actuators feature quality constructionwith a stainless steel extension tube andslip clutch to protect the unit fromoverloading.

Rated for 25% duty cycle for in-plantapplications, the Electrak 5 must be clevismounted. Standard lengths include 4, 8,12, 18 and 24" strokes. A capacitor is notincluded with the actuator.

General purpose DC actuatorElectrak 10 models incorporate a ballbearing screw drive system forapplications requiring maximum loadcapacity. A specially designed anti-backdriving brake holds tension orcompression loads in position when theactuator is not in use. This holding brakeactivates automatically when the actuatoris turned off and will continue to hold theload in position without powerconsumption, until the actuator is started.

Design features such as strong alloyhousing, reinforced end plugs and ruggedspur gearing are standard with theElectrak 10 series.

The Electrak 10 series provides as muchas 1500* pounds of force from a 12" longpackage. Twelve inches of linear travel isavailable from an overall package length ofjust 20 inches.

Warner Linear offers a choice in actuator controlsWhether you plan to operate from a simple pushbutton or a programmable controller,the MCS-2000 series controls can make your system easy to design and install andsimple to operate. The MCS-2005 linear actuator controlconverts 120 VAC input current to 24VDC output to operate an Electrak 1actuator. This compact control is designedto operate one actuator and an auxiliarydevice such as a photoscannersimultaneously. The control has twooutputs, a 24 VDC source controlled bythe rocker switch on the cover and asecond 24 VDC source which isunswitched. The source operated by therocker switch is used when operationthrough the control is desired. Theconstant output source is used when aremote switch is to control the actuator.An auxiliary device, such as aphotoelectric control which draws up to200 mA may also be connected to theauxiliary output.

When the extend side of the rocker switchis pressed the actuator will begin to

extend and will continue until either theswitch is released or the actuator reachesthe end of its stroke and the limit switchstops it. The actuator may be stopped bythe control anywhere along the totalstroke length but it must not be stalled inmid-stroke. A fused output protects themotor against overloads and stalling mid-stroke. Depressing the retract side of therocker switch will cause the actuator toretract as long as the switch is held oruntil the actuator reaches the end of itsstroke and the limit switch again stops it.

The MCS-2041 and 2042 linear actuatorcontrols are specifically designed tooperate Warner Electrak 5 linearactuators. These compact controls switchboth the actuator motor and its anti-coastbrake to provide optimum performance.

When the extend side of the rocker switchis pressed, the actuator will begin toextend and will continue until either theswitch is released or the actuator reachesthe end of its stroke and the ball detentclutch slips. Depressing the retract side of

the rocker switch will cause the actuatorto retract as long as the switch is held oruntil the actuator reaches the other end ofits stroke. The ball detent clutch will alsoslip on overloads. The actuator’s brakeengages when the switch is released or incase of power failure.

1 Question What is duty cycle andwhat is its affect on the use of anactuator?

Answer

Duty cycle =

The duty cycle is a function of load for DCactuators. The duty cycle charts for eachactuator should be reviewed when lowerloads and higher duty cycles are needed.All actuators have at least a 25% dutycycle at full rated load. Ambienttemperatures above 77°F may affect thefinal rating.

2 Question Can two or moreactuators be synchronized?

Answer No. Motor speed cannot becontrolled with enough precision to ensurethat the actuators will remain synchronizedand a binding effect could take place.

3 Question What is the maximumextension speed of an Electrak actuator?

Answer The extension speed of anactuator is a function of the load. Todetermine the speed of an Electrakactuator at a given load, consult thespeed/load charts. If a higher linear travelrate is required, simple mechanicallinkages can be employed.

4 Question Can actuators operateabove rated load?

Answer No, operation above rated loadwill adversely affect life.

5 Question When should an electricactuator be used instead of other linearmotion devices?

Answer If the load, duty cycle and speedrequirements are within the performanceparameters of an actuator, an Electrakactuator is highly recommended. Incontrast to other linear motion devices, anElectrak system has only two or threecomponents, minimizing initial installationcost and eliminating maintenance.Electrak actuators will perform as newthroughout their entire operational lifetime,will hold a load indefinitely without power,and can be directly interfaced to aprogrammable controller or otherelectronic control device.

6 Question Are actuators suitable fortough environments such as washdownareas or unheated warehouses?

Answer Yes. Warner linear actuators canoperate in temperatures ranging from -15° to 150°F. DC actuators are suitablefor washdown areas and have passed 96hour salt spray tests. (Equivalent to 2years in a seaside environment.) ACactuators are TENV construction and aresuitable for damp, dirty and oilyenvironments. They can also be usedoutdoors with a drip shield over the motorand proper grounding and ground faultprotection.

7 Question Can actuators be sideloaded?

Answer No. Through proper designpractices, side loading of the actuatorshould be eliminated.

8 Question What is the typical life ofan Electrak actuator?

Answer Life is a function of load andstroke length. The specific load/life chartsfor each actuator will provide a lifeestimate for your particular application.

9 Question Can I extend the life ofthe actuator?

Answer Using external limit switches tolimit the stroke length instead of ratchetingthe clutch will extend the life of theactuators without limit switches. Reducingthe load on the actuator will also increasethe life. Refer to the load/life charts foreach actuator for more details.

10 Question Is it possible for a loadto backdrive an Electrak actuator?

Answer No. Ball bearing screw modelsincorporate an anti-back driving holdingbrake and acme screw models are selflocking due to friction in the screwmechanism.

11 Question How is a load preventedfrom coasting to a stop when the actuatoris switched off?

Answer Electrak 5 and 205 actuatorsfeature an anti-coast brake and theElectrak 1, 10 and 100 series actuatorsused in conjunction with MCS-2000 seriescontrols are braked dynamically. Electrak2 actuators may be dynamically braked byshorting the motor leads together afterpower is removed.

12 Question What does the slipclutch do?

Answer The clutch slips when a factory-set load limit is exceeded. This preventsthe actuator from jamming at the end ofstroke or stalling and overheating due toan overload.

16 Question What’s the differencebetween a tension and compression load?

Answer A tension load tries to stretchthe actuator and a compression load triesto compress the actuator.

17 Question Are Warner linearactuators maintenance-free?

Answer Warner linear actuators neverrequire lubrication, maintenance oradjustments for wear. The life of theElectrak 205 will be greatly extended byperiodic lubrication using the grease fittingon the actuator. Lubrication isrecommended for every 25,000 cycles.

18 Question Can actuators performcomplex multi-positional linear motionfunctions?

Answer An Electrak actuator and controlsystem, used in conjunction with aprogrammable controller, can beprogrammed to perform motion profileswithin the limitations of the actuator’sstroke length and duty cycle. Answer The DC actuators can be run atreduced voltage (up to half voltage) toreduce the speed and still achieve theperformance specs in the catalog.

23 Question Can the actuator’spositioning capability be improved?

Answer Running the actuator at a slowerspeed will allow better control of theactuator and improve positioningcapability.

24 Question Can an MCS-2000series control operate more than oneactuator?

Answer For the control to operate morethan one actuator simultaneously, thecombined current draw of the actuatorsmust not exceed the maximum ratedcurrent output of the control. One set oflimit switches will limit the stroke of allactuators connected to the control.

The actuator mounting brackets must beable to withstand the torque which isdeveloped when the unit extends orretracts. Restraining torque required varieswith the model being used.

SynchronizationUsing two or more actuators together tomove the same load is not recommended.Normal tolerances in motor specificationscan cause one actuator to run faster thanthe other, causing binding.

Duty CycleAll Warner linear actuators are designedfor intermittent operation. Continuouscycling is to be avoided. All Electrakactuators are capable of operating atrated load with a duty cycle of 25% “on”time. Exceeding these recommended dutycycles will cause the motor thermalprotectors to automatically stop theactuator. After the motor has cooled thethermal protector will reset automatically.Repeated overloads will shorten the life ofthe actuator. Electrak 1 actuators have no

AC ActuatorsWarner Linear recommends using 16gauge wire for applications with distancesup to 20 feet from power source toactuator for AC units. For distancesranging from 20 to 60 feet, 14 gauge wireis recommended.

ConnectionAC actuator motor leads are pre-strippedfor installation convenience.

MountingWarner linear actuators are quickly andeasily mounted by slipping pins throughthe holes on each end of the unit and intobrackets on the machine frame and theload. Electrak 100 units must be mountedby the cover tube and a swivel rod end.The Electrak 205 can be mounted byeither the rear clevis or by a tube mount.

Half inch diameter solid pins (1/4" solidpins for Electrak 1) provide maximumholding strength and a retaining or cotterpin on each end will prevent the solid pinfrom falling out of its mounting bracket.Roll or spring type mounting pins shouldbe avoided.

The mounting pins must be parallel toeach other as shown below. Pins whichare not parallel may cause the actuator tobind.

The load should act along the axis of theactuator since off center loads may causebinding.

Holding BrakesThe Electrak 1, 2, 050 and 150incorporate an acme screw which isinherently self-locking while Electrak 5, 10,100 and 205 actuators have a ball bearingscrew drive incorporating a special anti-backdriving brake. In addition, theElectrak 5 and 205 employ a coastlimiting electromechanical brake which isautomatically operated.

Electrak 1, 2, 5, 10, 050, 100, 150Remote SwitchesActuators require double-pole double-throw switches. McGill switch no. 0121-004, Cutler-Hammer switch no. 8835-K4,or equivalent are recommended and areusually available locally. The requiredswitch can be purchased from WarnerElectric under part number 830-8004-016. Here are required switch parameters.

• Double-pole, double-throw

• 15 Amp at 270 VAC

• Lever seal to keep out dirt and moisture

• Center “off”

• Two momentary contacts

• 15/32" bushing

• Screw terminals

Temperature RangeAll Electrak actuators are operable attemperatures ranging from -15° to 150° F.

CapacitorsWarner Electrak 5 and 205 actuators usepermanent split capacitor motors whichrequire a capacitor for successfuloperation. The capacitor is installedacross the red/black (ext/retract) leads.

See pages 21 and 27 for the propercapacitor for each actuator and voltage.

Wire Gauge SelectionDC ActuatorsLong lead wires between the powersource and the actuator will result in avoltage drop for DC units. This voltagedrop can be avoided by sizing the wires inaccordance with the following wire gaugeselection chart, which is based on a 24VDC power source. In order to use thechart, find the point of intersection of thetwo known factors, such as amperageand distance, and read the required wiregauge from the curves on the chart.Example: A D24-05B5 actuator draws 14amps current at rated load. Theintersection of the maximum current andthe distance between the actuator andpower source (44 feet, for example)indicates the wire gauge required (#12).

Overload ClutchElectrak 2, 5, 10, 050 and 100 serieslinear actuators are protected by a loadlimiting clutch which prevents the motorfrom stalling at either end of the actuatorstroke. It will also slip when the factory-setload limit is exceeded. The clutch is a balldetent design, assuring a consistent slippoint and long life.

Limit SwitchesElectrak 1, 050, 100, 150 and 205actuators are provided with electrical endof stroke shut-off. Electrak 1 withfeedback must be used with the MCS-2007 control for end of stroke shut-off.
