THE ROTARY AWARD
It is with great pleasure I announce that Grace W
was presented with the Bert Sloane Youth
Achievement Award by the Rotary Club of Forest
Hill.
Grace has achieved much success in her academic
studies and always applies herself enthusiastically
to the task in hand.
Grace is a reliable, honest, friendly and caring
student. She is sensitive to others, always willing to
help those less fortunate than her. This is seen in
her contribution to fundraising, with the school and
to the wider community organisations, such as the
RSPCA.
Grace is a wonderful role model for her peers and
the younger members of our school. Her
determination to do what is right is most
commendable. Grace is resilient, a good mediator
and able to solve difficult situations with a “win-
win” for all.
Grace is a most worthy recipient of this prestigious
award.
CONGRATULATIONS, GRACE!
ELECTION OF 2015 SCHOOL LEADERS
On December 2nd we will be holding
elections for School Captains,
School Sports Captains, President,
Secretary and Treasurer of the
Student Representative Council,
School Arts Captains and School
House Captains. The class
representatives for the Student Representative
Council will be elected in early February 2015.
Students should prepare a short speech on why they
wish to be a school leader in 2015, outlining their
skills, abilities and personal qualities, which would
make them suitable for the position. The speech
should be no longer than two minutes. Students in
2014 Years Three to Five will cast their votes.
I encourage all students to put themselves
forward if they wish to be a leader next year.
EXCEL MUSIC OPEN LESSON DAY
On Monday 15th December EXCEL
MUSIC will be hosting an Open
Lesson Day. Parents will have the
opportunity to attend their child’s
lesson and observe the progress that
has been achieved during the course of the year. It
also enables students to perform for an audience
which is very important for their musical
development and personal growth.

LOST PROPERTY
It is really incredible to see so many unnamed items
of school uniform and the ever increasing number
of unclaimed articles of clothing. I ask parents to
please check in the Lost Property table located in
the junior building if they are missing any school
uniform garments, lunch boxes or drink bottles.
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
It is that time of year that along with different
illnesses there is a lot of hayfever. If you child
requires any sort of medication to be taken at school
you must fill out a permission to admister
medication form and medications should be in the
original packaging (if possible). Medication should
never be kept in a students bag, always be given to
the teacher or office. This form is available from the
school office.

HOW MANY JELLYBEANS IN THE JAR?
To help raise funds for State Schools
Relief, Charlie from 12W and her
family have donated a jar of
Jellybeans.
On Friday 28th November students are invited to
come along and have a guess. There will be a table
set up on the decking area at 1.10pm. For each
guess you will place 20c in the State Schools Relief
tin.
LICE DETECTION
I ask that every parent regularly check their
child’s/children’s hair for lice. There have been a
number of cases of head lice throughout the school.
It is very important that if you detect head lice in
your child hair, they are treated before returning to
school.

KITCHEN NOTES
This week’s recipe is pretty simple and very tasty. Just remember to
make the pastry the night or morning before you cook the torte as it
needs to rest for two hours. We used beautiful silverbeet and potatoes
fresh from the garden but you could add any seasonal vegetables as a
variation. Root vegies would work well as would peas!
This recipe is great for anyone suffering lactose intolerance as the
pastry uses olive oil rather than butter.
Silverbeet and Potato Torte
150g Young Silverbeet (Or Rainbow Chard)
Salt
150g Potatoes
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Finely Chopped Onion
2 tablespoons Finely Chopped Parsley
150g Mozzarella
Freshly Ground Pepper
1 large Egg
Olive Oil Pastry
200g Plain Flour
½ teaspoon Salt
1½ tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
½ cup Cold Water
1. To make the pastry, whiz flour and salt in a food processor. Drizzle in oil and
then water. Process for about 1 minute until mixture forms a ball.
2. Transfer to a floured work surface and knead for 2-3 minutes until supple
and smooth. Put into a bowl, cover with a clean tea towel and refrigerate for
2 hours.
3. Separate silverbeet stems from the leaves.
4. Wash and trim stems, then chop finely.
5. Wash leaves, then roll them up and slice finely.
6. Put stems into a colander and toss with 1 tablespoon salt. Set aside for 20
minutes.
7. Meanwhile, boil potatoes in lightly salted water for 15-20 minutes until
tender, then drain, peel and dice.
8. Preheat oven to 200°C and lightly oil a 28cm pizza tray.
9. Quickly rinse silverbeet and squeeze it dry in a clean tea towel.
10. Combine silverbeet with potato, onion, parsley and cheese, and then add
pepper to taste.
11. Whisk egg with 1 tablespoon oil and add to silverbeet mixture. Taste for salt.
12. On a floured surface, roll out two-thirds of the pastry to a round that will easily
cover the pizza tray. Spoon on filling, leaving a 2cm border around the pastry.
13. Dampen border with water. Roll remaining pastry to a round a little smaller that
the pizza tray and drape it over filling.
14. Seal edges, then fold extra pastry from base to over sealed edges and press
together.
15. Pierce top here and there with a fork and drizzle with 1 tablespoon oil. Scatter with
a little salt.
16. Bake for 20-30 minutes until golden brown.
17. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before cutting
