Kalinda Primary School’s Vision Statement A learning community with shared values, fostering a life-long love
of learning through meaningful experiences, to embrace a constantly changing society.
ELECTION DAY BBQ & CAKE STALL Thank you to those people who have returned their Helper forms for Election Day. We still have room on the roster for more people to help out so if you can spare an hour or two, please fill out the form sent home last week and return to the office. The form is also available on the website at www.kalinda.vic.edu.au under Notices & Forms. FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
From the Principal…………….
A VISIT TO THE MARKET I was very lucky again on Tuesday to be off on the visit to the Queen Victoria Market with our Life Skills and Veggie Viking children. We had a task to do, so we set off in groups with our shopping lists and money for purchasing some food. As we walked around the market the children had to find the food on the shopping list, talk to the shop keepers and purchase the items. As you can see by the photos below, some of the shop keepers had a wonderful time amusing the children. I must say, octopus and giant fish were not on our shopping lists! After purchasing our food in our groups and having a look round the market at other things, we all met together again and walked across the road to the Flagstaff Gardens. Here the Integration Aides, led by our wonderful Kelly, Canteen Manager, cut up all the food while Mrs Elliott and I supervised the children on the playgrounds. When the food was ready the children had a picnic, tasting foods they had never tasted before. There was much excitement and going back for seconds and thirds as the children realised how tasty the foods were (we had checked for any allergies beforehand). We do hope the parents of the children involved could talk to children about the foods they tasted and liked and perhaps purchase those in their next shopping expedition.

VANDALISM Unfortunately, last Friday night we did have some windows broken at the school. This is very disappointing as we rarely suffer any damage. If you are in the school grounds at any time and you see any vandalism or anyone attempting vandalism, please do ring the police at once. The police do attend when called and they appreciate the information in case there is a series of vandalism events in the local area. The more information they gain from the public, the more chance there is of catching the offenders.
CAR PARK I do implore parents not to enter the Staff Car Park unless you have been given permission by the school. On wet days there seem to be quite a few parents entering the car park and parking up on the grassed area. The other day I noticed from my office window a few cars coming into this area as mothers were walking through with prams and toddlers just after the 3.30pm bell. We do not want any people put in the way of danger in this situation. Also, when parents think they have the right to do this they are forgetting the rights of every other parent in the school. We have 305 families in the school and if they all felt they had a right to come into the school ground, there would be incredible chaos, obviously. All parents have equal rights, not one group of parents having rights over others.
PARENTS & FRIENDS A big thank you to our Parents & Friends Committee, and extra helpers, who manned the Father’s Day Stall on Wednesday. It was great to see so many willing workers providing these opportunities for our children and having fun at the same time. I know that Parents & Friends are planning for our Transition Program, which begins on Friday 25
th October. This
group really do a fantastic job throughout the school and I encourage other people to join in with the fun. I wish all Dads a very Happy Father’s Day on Sunday. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL
VEGGIE VIKINGS VISIT QUEEN VIC MARKET Kayley H. 12C. I thought it was great. We got to taste food, cheese, vegies and pink bread that had beetroot in it. It was nice. There was a big fish, a crab and an octopus at the market. We got to have a big picnic with the food we bought. We had a great time. Isabella G. 12C. After we went to the market, we went to a playground so we could have a little play. Mrs Pollard called us to come and get some food. I tried some carrots and some dip that I haven't had before, I liked it. The dip was spring onion. Miranda C. 12C. I am a Vegie Viking and we went on a bus to the Queen Vic Market. When we got there we went to find Kelly. We had a look at the meat and the fish. I tasted purple grapes for the first time. I bought some meat. Ebony T. 12C. It was a fun day. We got to taste different food like grapes, strawberries, watermelon and cucumber. My brother came too. The people who work at the market yell out, "come and buy from me!" They are funny. On the bus we got to watch a funny movie. We would like to thank everyone for taking us.

Cybersmart Parents – parenting in an online world The internet is an incredibly powerful tool, and for our children there has never been a time when it didn’t exist. As they grow older it becomes their automatic ‘go to’ for almost everything: games, movies, information, directions, tickets to events, communicating with friends, or just finding something out. And almost everything they use has a social layer attached to it. For example, for my generation, playing computer games was a very individual exercise. For kids today it is incredibly social. They can not only play with or against other real people, but also engage in chat streams and video calls with those people while they do it. For us parents, it has never been harder to keep a track on all the things our children are doing online. In fact, the demands on parents of this current generation of children are unprecedented and can seem quite daunting. Never before has a generation had such immediate, portable, easy and almost ubiquitous access to the online world. And it’s about to get even more ubiquitous, as internet enabled ‘smart’ watches and even glasses are about to hit the market. We face the immense challenge of not just ‘keeping up’ with what our kids are up to online, but somehow forming enough of an understanding of it to be able to guide our children in the safe and ethical use of online tools. On the flip side, our children are entering an exciting world where new technologies are making so many things, that were the stuff of fantasy for us, a reality for them. If we can teach them how to use these technologies safely, ethically, and purposely, the world is their oyster. In this new column each week we’ll be looking at ICT and the online world from a parent’s perspective. We’ll be discussing some common issues and providing tips and helpful resources for parents to help them better understand what their kids are up to online (or soon will be up to as they grow older!), the potential dangers, and the enormous positive potential of different technologies as well. Our hope is that this information can assist parents to be more confident in their role of guiding their children safely through their first steps into the digital world. Next week we will look more closely at the issue of trying to keep up with and understand what your children ‘get up to’ online. From different websites, through to games and then into different social networks, what is the best way to ensure your children are staying safe and being responsible? If you have things you would like covered in this column in the future, feel free to email me at [email protected] Richard Lambert Assistant Principal

CAN YOU HELP???? Last year some people donated their marquees/shelters to help out on Fete Day. It has just been discovered by one of the parents that their tent poles are not the correct ones. Could everyone who brought a marquee or shelter please have a look and see if you have any poles that do not match your set. (The poles did have blue masking tape with “Gibb” written on them.) The return and swap of these asap would be much appreciated. KELLY WOODMAN FETE COORDINATOR

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Week 7, Term 3
Program Update
Hi everyone, this week we have introduced a Sustainability / Recycling element to our program. 3 new small wheelie bins have been purchased. One for paper & Cardboard, the second for Plastics and the third for all general rubbish. We will soon be adding a compost tub to the program to help the children learn about how to look after the earth in a productive manner. Every small action can combine to have a bigger effect. This week the children also created their “Positive Guidelines” for how they interact within the Oshclub Room. It was great to see so many of the children show leadership and responsibility. And remember, new families can enrol for free at www.oshclub.com.au anytime you choose. Plus if you still have your “Free Session” coupon, it is valid until end of the 2013 school year. Just hand it back to one of our friendly Oshclub staff members. Thanks
