    1. Compare features of language and communication.

    2. Explain how sounds are produced in the English sound system.

    6. Transfer knowledge of semantics and pragmatics in different context.

    SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES

    To enable students to:

    1. search for relevant materials and gather information about non-verbal communication(NVC) in the selected country (1.1, 2.3, 2.5, 6.3, 7.5)

    2. compare and contrast the NVC in that country with the ones in Malaysia(1.5, 2.4, 6.4,8.4)

    3. evaluate pupils composition, identify and correct the grammatical and syntacticalerrors and produce an essay (1.3, 2.5, 3.4, 4.6, 5.1, 6.4)

    ASSIGNMENT 1

    ORAL PRESENTATION (30%)

    Rules and norms that govern non-verbal communication (NVC) behaviours are culturespecific (Fritz et. al., 2005). Compare and contrast the NVC in Malaysia and another countryof your choice.

    A. The Task (Pair work)

    You are to work in pairs.1. Select ONE country of your choice.

    2. Explore the non-verbal communication in that country (surf the Net and othersources).

    ASSIGNMENT 2 (50%)

    WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT A Report (1000 words)

    This task seeks to explore the grammatical and syntactical errors inherent in pupils use ofEnglish language. Various approaches are adopted in the teaching of English. Yet,grammatical syntactical errors seem to be apparent in the ESL learners spoken discourse.

    The task should help ESL teacher trainees to develop sensitivity to the problems faced bytheir pupils in constructing grammatically correct sentences in spoken English

    THE TASK

    There are two parts to the assignment: Part 1 and Part 2

    A. Part 1 (30%)

    You should use the material provided. Go through the composition carefully. In youranalysis,

    1. Identify FIVE different types of grammatical and/or syntactical errors. Each type of

    error should occur in the recording at least three times.2. Correct all the 15 errors.3. Explain each error by relating to grammatical rules or syntactical rules from your

    readings.
