Non-traditional Students at CSUSB
.
The number of non-traditional students--those who are over age 25, have families, are employed full-time, or enrolled part-time--is steadily increasing throughout the nation.
1
USA Today reports that according to the National Center for Education Statistics, about half of today's students are financially independent, 49 percent are enrolled part-time, 38 percent have full-time jobs, and 27 percent have dependents.
Recent statistics released by the University of Louisiana system indicate that non-traditional students make up a significant percentage of the student body.
2
As a result, many institutions are creating programs designed to help such students better juggle their responsibilities
"We're becoming very cognizant of student schedules and changing class offerings so classes are extending later in the day," noted Randy Moffett, president of the University of Louisiana System, who was interviewed by The News-Star.
"We've changed counseling and advising opportunities to focus on the needs of the non-traditional students who are also focused on work. It's a cultural shift to meet the needs of our students."
Non-traditional students contribute to higher education by bringing a unique perspective to the classroom.
3
Their life experiences help create an environment both enriching and stimulating for students and faculty members
In conclusion
Priority registration is a need of CSUSB non-traditional students and as such should not be overlooked to ensure a
situation for everyone.
