Week 8: 1st June 2020

Wider Curriculum (More details are below for the science and art task).

Science: Life Cycles!

RE: If we were in school, our new unit would have been ‘People of Faith’. I will like you to look up some facts

about Martin Luther King and present these facts in a creative way. Find out how he showed faith, who and

what he had faith in and how did Martin Luther King make a difference in the world.

Art: Henri Rousseau inspired art.

Welcome back everyone, I hope you all had a lovely half term and managed to enjoy the sunshine and I’m sure the

children enjoyed having a well-earned rest. We are back on to the home learning pack again this week and I have set

it out in the same format as before half term as this seems to be working well. To make it easier for all of us, you

only need to upload the work I have mentioned in the list below to your Dojo portfolio.

The only work you need to post pictures of to your Dojo portfolios are:

▪ The English activity you have completed each day.

▪ One piece of maths from the week that you are particularly proud of.

▪ Your arithmetic test score.

▪ Your science task.

▪ Your RE task.

▪ Your artwork.

▪ One photo of you doing something creative or enjoyable.

On our page on the school website (Click children, Elder, Home learning) on there you will find under ‘Week 8’, I have

set all of the work needing to be completed this week. Please do continue to send me messages and photos as I am

really missing you all and I will always reply. Please do message me if there is anything you do not understand or if you

have any questions or worries.

Copies of the text and all the links you need are in

the table below.

A copy of the text will be on the class page of the

website, under home learning ‘week 8’.

Write the below spellings into sentences in your

neatest handwriting. I want to see the most exciting

sentences you can create this week as a challenge, try

to use exciting sentence openers and now the word

‘the’ over and over again.

Maths

Each day I have set you reading and writing tasks based on extracts, information, and videos

all about the Titanic (part 2). You shouldn’t need to print anything out for this and can do the

tasks on paper. Enjoy!

**Note for parents**:

When following links online, parents should monitor that children are remaining on that page only

and are keeping safe online.

Due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter this week, it is advised that all reading

activities and the watching of clips, are completed with an adult and supported through

discussion.

Focus Theme: Titanic (Part 2)

Continue to explore all there is to know about the most famous ocean liner,

‘Titanic’. This week concentrates on the sinking of Titanic.

Monday Watch Sinking of the Titanic – only up to 6:30 mins here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0L_2jKEbA4&t=198s

Write down key facts about the sinking as you watch.

Imagine you are a news reporter in 1912 and you have just received the information

that Titanic has sunk. Write a news report explaining to your readers the events of

the tragedy. Once you have written your news report, if possible, you may wish to

film your report as if it is aired on BBC news.

An example of a completed news report can be found here: The Sinking of the Titanic

– Breaking News Report: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zc78q6f

Remember to read back through your work and check your spelling and punctuation.

Tuesday Read the information page titled ‘Why did the Titanic sink?’ – (extract 1 in the pdf

file).

After reading each account of who was to blame, decide who you think was

responsible for the sinking – this may be one person or a combination of a few people.

Imagine you have been asked to join a debate about who was to blame for the sinking

of Titanic. Write down who you think was/were responsible giving your reasons. You

may wish to add supporting facts based on what you have read over the past week.

Remember to read back through your work and check your spelling and punctuation.

Wednesday Read about notable passengers who were on board Titanic in Molly Brown and Eleven

Other Famous Titanic Passengers – (extract 2 in the pdf file).

Select two of the passengers you have read about that interest you the most. Create

a fact file for these two passengers – giving the main facts about their journey on

board.

Thursday Think about these two subjects in relation to Titanic.

- Titanic

- Passengers

Page 3: Elder Class Newsletter · Your piece of artwork doesn’t have to look exactly the same as Henri Rousseaus, you can add your own unique style to the artwork but use Henri Rousseau’s

For each subject, write two adjectives, three verbs and two nouns, which link to

these topics, e.g. for Titanic you may use:

Adjectives: magnificent, doomed

Verbs: sailing, colliding, sinking

Nouns: vessel, ship

Use www.wordhippo.com to improve your vocabulary. Once you have chosen your

nouns, adjectives and verbs, use these to create a ‘diamante poem’.

Diamante poems use this structure:

Noun (Titanic)

Adjective, Adjective

Verb, Verb, Verb

Noun, Noun, Noun, Noun

Verb, Verb, Verb,

Adjective, Adjective,

Noun (passengers)

The words in green will be the ones you generated for Titanic and the word in red will

be the ones you generated for passengers.

A completed example may look like this:

Titanic

Magnificent, Doomed

Sailing, Colliding, Sinking

Vessel, Ship, Men, Women

Gazing, Exploring, Searching,

Poor, Rich,

Passengers

Friday Use all you have read about The Titanic to create either of these two writing

outcomes:

Non chronological report: Create a non-chronological report about Titanic. Select the

topics you found most interesting and write a section for each.

Infographic (a collection of images, charts and short pieces of text to provide an

easy to understand overview of a topic). Create an infographic about particular key

facts for the Titanic. An example of an infographic - Sinking the ‘Unsinkable’ can be

found here: https://www.earthlymission.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/titanic-infographic-2.jpg

Remember to read back through your work and check your spelling and punctuation.

certain types of grammar mean:

Science-

I would like you to think about the life cycle of either a frog or a butterfly. Do some research about the life

cycle of the animal you have chosen and draw out their life cycle explaining clearly (using scientific vocabulary)

what happens at each stage. If there is any other useful information you find whilst researching, you can

include this on your life cycle too. You can present your life cycle how you wish e.g. you could do it on paper

plates, cut a piece of the top plate out and spin the top plate to reveal a part of the bottom life cycle or you

can do it on PowerPoint or on paper. Remember it should be in a circle to show that this cycle is continuous.

Art:

I would like you to use the pieces of artwork below (on the last page) by Henri Rousseau and recreate one of

these pieces using a similar style. Your piece of artwork doesn’t have to look exactly the same as Henri

Rousseaus, you can add your own unique style to the artwork but use Henri Rousseau’s artwork as inspiration.

Add colour to your artwork using whichever form of media you wish (e.g. coloured pencils, pastels, paints).
