2. Bellringer For the first 5 minutes of classyou need to get your things from the back cabinet and work on the bellringer on the board. The bellringer will usually be a question or exercise about something we learned during last class. 3. Crack at a snack! During the bellringer or rightafter, you will sometimes have an opportunity to win a snack. I will ask a question about something we learned last time and if you remember the answer you win a snack! 4. New reading strategyMany students told me inthe survey that they want to be better readers. Before reading each day I will teach you a new reading strategy we can practice. 5. Independent Reading We will continue to read for 15 minutes everytime we have class. You will need to have a book to read and we will go to the library to help you find something that is interesting to you. You need to record how much you read each time in your reading log. I will pull you aside every now and then to see how your book is going. You will earn points for talking about your book with me. 6. Writing Journal During writing journal you need tokeep your pencil moving for 10 minutes. I will put on music without words if you are quiet and not talking. I will write a prompt (an idea) to get you started just under the bellringer on the board. 7. Word of the week! 15 minutes On the first class of the week we will map out theword of the week. On the second class of the week we will do an experiment to learn more about the work. We will have a word of the week quiz twice during the quarter and will review all the words of the week throughout the quarter. 8. PronunciationWe will spend 5minutes on pronunciation each class. 9. What you want to learn about! I made a list from the surveyyou answered and now have a bunch of things that I know you want to learn about. Well have a 15 minute lesson about something new each time. 10. Homework from other classes We all want to do better in school. Sometimes, because we are learning English,we need a little bit more help to get good grades in our other classes. The last 15 minutes of class is for other homework. Come prepared with something to work on from another class every time we meet. Marta or I can help tutor you in the subject that you need. 11. Fridays are different Whenever we have class on a Friday (and itsthe 3rd class that week) we will do 2 things:1. Show and Tell 2. Games Word games to practice vocabulary Talking games to practice speaking and social English 12. All district and school policies apply to my classroom. What are those even? 13. A student is responsible to contribute positively to the learning in the classroom. Hillcrest High School Planner p. 11If you do anything tostop learning, I will do something. 14. Responsibilities, p. 17 Students Show respect for teachers andclassmates by attending class regularly and on time. Monitor attendance and grades regularly using Skyward. 15. Cont. Responsibilities, p. 17 Parents Monitor student attendance and grades regularly using Skyward. Plan medical appointments and vacations at times which do not interfere with the academic year when possible. 16. Phone usage Students should not be making or acceptingcalls or text messages during class time. Student cell phone usage should not interfere with the educational process in any way. If a phone or other electronic device should disrupt a class (ringing, beeping, etc.), the device will be confiscated by the teacher and given to an assistant principle. After the first offense a parent will have to come to the office to meet with the students assistant principal to pick up a students cell phone. Hillcrest High School Planner p. 24-25 18. Phone usage No warning (just this PowerPoint)I see it, I take it. I will walk over to your desk and hold my hand out (even if its away by then). 2. I will walk over to your desk and hold my hand out (even if theyre away by then). 2. If student refuses, class will continue and referral will be submitted to the administrator after class. 20. Dress Code Hats of any kind are not allowed within thebuilding except as part of an approved activity, or for religious or medical purposes. Hillcrest High School Planner p. 15 HOODS INCLUDED I will say your name and gesture for you to remove the hat/hood. If student refuses, class will continue and referral will be submitted to the administrator after class. 21. Why all the referrals? Im not going to power struggle with students ifthey refuse to follow rules/instructions. It wastes class time and stops learning. If its happening in my class, its happening in other classes. It helps other teachers and students out. Id rather spend prep time planning fun lessons than calling parents and meeting with students after school. 22. What is a referral? When you choose NOT to follow rules andinstructions, a referral may be filed without me telling you. Usually Ill say your name and ask you to stop, and if you dont Ill just shrug, go on with class, and file the referral after. When I fill out a referral for you, an administrator calls you into their office during that day or the next. I might be present for that meeting and your parent might also be called. 23. Bottom line?Follow instructionswithout argument Hillcrest High School Standards and Expectations>Classroom>Respectful 24. Participation I dont give you participation pointslike Mrs. Freeman because the Attendance policy should motivate you enough to get to class. We also do a lot of classwork that counts towards your grade so thats the real reason you dont want to miss. 25. Dismissing class what NOT to do 26. Classroom Behavior If a students behavior becomesdisruptive to the classthe teacher will try to resolve any concerns with individual students using any or all of the following [consequences]. p. 11 Define disruptive actions Out of seat, excessive talking, offtask behavior 27. Getting out of seat If you have trash at yourdesk, hold on to it and throw it away on your way out of class. Ill try to have interactive activities everyday, when I dont, thats why we have our brain/body break to stretch. (descanso) 28. Define disrespectful actions Arguing with instructions Not following instructions Disrespectful tone language Whining 29. Consequences Recap 1.
