FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK

Lent is moving very quickly as we enter this fifth week and Holy Week is on its heels. Next Sunday is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. We proclaim two Gospels on that day: one at the very beginning of Mass, announcing Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, with the blessing & procession of palms, and the other at the usual time, the rich and lengthy passion narrative, this year from the Gospel of Luke. It’s a joyful, yet sobering, solemn day as we move from what appears to be a victorious procession of Jesus to His crushing crucifixion. Palms will be given out at all the Masses. Please note that at the 9:30 AM & 6:00 PM Masses, we will begin in the courtyard. The church doors will remain closed except for those who have difficulty walking. All others are asked to meet in the courtyard for the blessing of palms, proclamation of the first Gospel, and then procession into the church. The Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulcher from around the parishes in our Diocese will lead part of the procession at the 9:30 AM Mass. (This Catholic organization helps support the Christian sites in the Holy Land and the struggling Christians in that part of the world.) It will be a beautiful way to begin Holy Week. Please allow a little extra time for Masses next weekend. The Liturgy of the Word is longer and there will likely be more people in attendance than on a regular Sunday. It is a time for us to welcome and encourage our visitors in the faith.

Thinking about additional people and parking issues, there is a movement afoot for a private business to acquire the city public parking lot across from the Cathedral on Second St. I believe many of you rely on that lot to park. There isn’t much additional parking available & our parish lot cannot handle all of those coming to Mass. As I talk with the city about this concern I would like to get a good sense of how many of you coming to Mass normally park in that lot, so I will be asking you to raise your hands for a count at Mass the next couple of weeks.

Lent is a time of reflection and repentance from sin. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is most often celebrated during this time, several parishes including ours, is having a Reconciliation Service with many priests to assist in the individual confession and absolution portion of the sacrament. The preparation for this sacrament is crucial. A good examination of conscience readies us to know what we ought to confess and, equally important, what we need to change in our lives. The sacrament has little effect if we just bring the same sins with no true intention to live differently. I’ve included later in the bulletin a good examination of conscience from the USCCB, as a guide to preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I encourage you to take some time to pray through it. Our parish service will be at 6:30 PM on Tuesday of Holy Week, April 16. Holy Week is the most solemn liturgical time of year, I hope that you will make the time to come to the special liturgies of that week. Holy Thursday Mass will be at 7:00 PM. Good Friday Daytime Liturgy, a 3-hour devotion beginning at noon, will be comprised of the Stations of the Cross, Reflections on the Seven Last Words of Christ, the Good Friday Daytime Liturgy will be led by Bishop Calvo. Plan to come to part or all of that sacred time. Good Friday Evening Liturgy at 7:00 PM. Due to the long proclamation of the Scriptures, the Word part of that liturgy will take place in different places in English and in Spanish, we all then will come together for the Venera-tion of the Cross and Holy Communion. Ecumenical City Stations, beginning at 4:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church. Spanish Living Stations of the Cross in our courtyard at 5:30 PM. Holy Saturday-Easter Vigil will begin in the courtyard at 8:00 PM. (NO Confessions or 5:00 PM Mass) Easter Sunday Masses will be at the usual time. The richness of our faith is revealed, remembered and celebrated throughout these holy days, so I hope that you all will be able to take part fully. Blessings to you all this 5th Week of Lent!

CHRISM MASS THURSDAY, APRIL 11TH AT 5:30 PM

SAINT ROSE OF LIMA PARISH Join Bishop Calvo as he blesses and consecrates the Chrism Oil that is used for Bap sm, Confirma on, Holy Orders and Anoin ng of the Sick during the up-coming year. A er it is blessed, the oil is distributed and used at all the churches & hospitals of the diocese. The priests of the diocese par cipate by renewing the promises they made on their ordina on day. It includes their call to serve the people of God faithfully, the call to be men of prayer and the call to be faithful to one’s Bishop. That is a powerful moment in the life of the priest and also for the lay faithful who are called to renew their own commitment and prayers for the priests.

2- Transfigúrame, Señor, a tu imagen.

SALIDA 1- La alegría más hermosa es la alegría en el perdón, que en el cielo hay mucha fiesta cuando vuelve un pecador;
