Young Leaders at St Marys Primary (Gillingham)

Year 5 pupils at St Marys recently received training to become activity leaders. The aim of the award is to help pupils develop leadership skills such as organisation, communication and teamwork, as well as helping to build confidence and self-esteem as they take on responsibility of leading their peers and younger children.

At the start of the day, there were several boys and girls who were keen but a bit apprehensive. They followed the STEP principle when planning and leading activities and ensured that all of their ideas incorporated “SOCCER” – Safety, Organisation, Co-operation, Communication, Enjoyment and Responsibility. They practised their leading skills on each other before leading pupils from a year 3 classes. They now feel confident to organise and lead small games and activities during their lunch time. The leaders also feel ready to lead their class through a warm up for PE and are looking forward to helping Miss Jessup to run sports day.

Inter/Intra Athletics at St MarysThis annual competition is always very popular at St Marys and all of the pupils from year 3 and above take part in the speed bounce, standing long jump, chest push, mega howler throw and the 35m sprint.

Pupils have several attempts at each event and the competition is strong.

Miss Jessup uses the results to help her choose her athletics team and to discover new talent. She also rewards the best boy and girl in each class, plus the runners up.

For the second year, Asda Active sent a representative who gave all the children a healthy snack and a drink after they had competed.

It was a very busy day for the year 6 activity leaders as well as some sports leaders from Rainham School for Girls who judged and recorded all of the events.

Andrew Bridge talking to Sports Volunteers for West Kent School Games

Training Student Volunteers for the West Kent School GamesYear 9 sports leaders from Rainham School for Girls received training at Medway Park in preparation for helping at the West Kent Games. They were welcomed by Andrew Bridge, ex GB basketball player who gave an inspirational speech.

As the day progressed, they discussed how to make it a day to remember for all of the competitors. The leaders were chosen initially by Mrs Halls and then had to write and explain why they were suitable candidates to lead at this prestigious event. Hannah, Abbey, Hollie and Keisha chose to officiate at the Super 8 athletics competition, (Rainham Girls year 7 athletics team have subsequently qualified to represent Medway at this event); Rebecca, Ciara, Becky and Gabby chose to lead the tri golf competition and Liv, Genevieve and Toni were be part of the media team. Gail Halls SSCo

Secondary Athletics warm up eventsStudents from Rainham Mark, Rochester Grammar, Robert Napier, Thomas Aveling, Hundred of Hoo and Rainham Girls recently took part in two athletics events hosted by Rainham School for Girls – one for year 8 boys and girls, the other for year 9s.

This was a chance for the P.E. staff to see who their best athletes were in preparation for District Sports, but it also gave other students, who wouldn’t make that team, the chance to participate in an athletics competition. There were some exciting performances, which I’m sure will be improved on when they compete on a proper track at Medway Park at the annual SSG District Athletics event on 16th July.
