I am writing to protest the sale of Terasen Gas to the US company Kinder Morgan. The sale must be approved by the BC Utilities Commission which will hold hearings on the sale and so it is still possible to stop.

My Specific Concern: The short term cash injection from this sale will in no way benefit the province in the long run. Selling off a huge investment of our energy resources to our neighbour to the south, whose present and previous governments have shown little regard for the environment and to giving Canadians a fare shake, promises to have dire consequences.

Subject: proposed sale of BC Natural Gas resource to offshore interests

9/25/2005

Please let me know what is happening -- I hear of a proposed sale of Terasun Gas to a US corporation. I am very concerned that BC could lose control of Natural Gas, an essential resource -- this is BC, where we have very severe cold winters. Gas has become a primary and sole heat source for most of the province I believe, as has the electric control of our heating devices. I am very strongly opposed to any sales of our resources to offshore investors. I can still hardly believe that control of a large section of BC Hydro is in Bermuda, a country which does not even have an extradition treaty with Canada. I understand that we cannot expect to be able to use lawful intervention if that company or individuals within it act contrary to Canadian law. I do not trust any U.S. company would consider our dependance on fuels, stay within the limits of NAFTA, or listen to decisions of the BCUC, considering the softwood experience. I am not sure that even that the BC Government won't try to find a way to get around BCUC rulings. The logical and best scenario would be that B.C. buys Terasun. Please let me know of any developments, and when we can expect to have a public hearing on this issue. Daryl J. Clayton, 3555 Sage Drive, Kamloops BC V2B 7K4

9/25/2005

Hi, Just thought I'd voice my feelings regarding the sale of BC owned Terasen Gas to Texas-based Kinder Morgan. without open public hearings in every region of our province. Whether or not you want to believe it or not this proposed sale will affect every family and thousands of businesses in British Columbia like it or not. There is no use in denying the facts. All indications at this time seem to show that this sale is to slip through under the public radar to avoid serious scrutiny of the deal. It is already common knowledge that Terasen Gas executives are awarding themselves big financial bonuses in anticipation of this sale, while the public is left with skyrocketing gas bills and little or no say in a deal that could have serious environmental implications. According to media reports, an internal Terasen Gas memo indicates that senior Terasen executives "are poised to cash in stock options worth $20 million if shareholders approve the transactions at meetings in Vancouver on October 18." Last week, that you the BCUC approved a 13-per-cent hike in natural gas prices Terasen charges to B.C. consumers. Well, I as a Terasen customer and many others should be heard and at the very least also benefit from those benefits, it is a travesty of democracy and justice to deny public hearings and to allow such outrages increases in natural gas pricing when it clearly shows that this increase is not to cover the increase in natural gas prices but to feather the nest of company executives. I'd also like to remind the B.C. Utilities Commission that our energy resources belong to all the people of British Columbia. And British Columbians have right to speak out on this sale and have their voices heard before a B.C. based company is sold off to an American conglomerate. It appears that you also need to reminded that there many elderly and disabled people that just plain can not afford to heat their homes with the prices you approved, ask yourself what would you do if you were in their place? I have a very ill mother of 86 years of age that can not absorb the proposed increases, how can you say to her that tough luck lady you're just going to have freeze. I'm sure there many others that are in the same position, I can't for the like of me believe that nothing can be done, yes things can be done but no body has the backbone to actually stand up for the people whom all of you have sworn to serve. Well. I have news for you, you are failing on all counts and should resign in shame your posts immediately. --

Dear Sir,

Please consider this email as my strong objection to the sale of Terasen Gas to Kinder Morgan. I do not believe this sale to be in the best interests of Canadians and BC residents and business in particular. Kinder Morgan's pipeline safety record certainly leaves a lot to be desired and it seems unlikely they would maintain better compliance in Canada.

Our natural resources are increasingly coming under control of American interests. What safeguards do we really have that Canadian interests will be protected if and when natural gas supplies become in short supply…I believe we all know the "National Interests of the United States take precedence over all other matters and agreements, i.e. the Softwood Lumber Dispute.

We request that you do not approve the Kinder Morgan bid to purchase Terasen Gas in the "National Interests of Canada".

Kinder Morgan is so determined to rape and plunder us that we, British Columbians and our future generations will suffer the consequences.Look at the CN Rail car accident in the Squamish. 9/25/2005

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing in order to share my deepest concern regarding the sale of Terasen Inc. to Kinder Morgan Inc., which you will soon be asked to approve.

Since the implementation of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, I have witnessed the increasing loss of control over the country’s energy resources and its infrastructures. From the elimination of the 25-year contingency reserve provision, to the implementation of the proportional sharing provision, most of Canada’s energy decisions have resulted in our country losing sovereignty over our resources.

This sale will undoubtedly rob B.C. communities of the power to influence future energy decisions in the province. It will also reinforce the view that Canadians are, in effect, becoming tenants in their own land. Canada needs to protect its basic natural resources to ensure prosperity for our future generations.

I urge you to prevent this deal by refusing to ratify it until such time as an exhaustive evaluation of Canada’s energy situation is completed and provincial – and national – energy strategies are drafted and adopted. As the U.S. Administration is keen to highlight, control of energy resources will be the struggle of the future. Canada needs to start preparing for this struggle and defending infrastructures built and paid for by the Canadian public.

Sincerely, concerned Canadians

Hello: I am absolutely outraged at the proposed sale of Terasen Gas. I have heard all the arguments, which I won't repeat here, since you've probably heard them as well. As a taxpayer, consumer and concerned Canadian I strongly believe that natural resources should stay in Canadian hands. Bill Vander Zalm had, at least, insured that only 20% could be owned by foreigners. Apparently the Campbell government felt that was a bad idea and not in the interest of British Columbians so it did away with this garantee. How can we combat this idea that anything good for corporations is necessarily good for citizens. The world is littered with examples where that has not been the case. No sooner was the proposed sale announced that a tidy rate increase was put in and APPROVED! I thought that you were supposed to protect the interest of the people you serve - I'm certainly concerned that this does not appear to be the case. This is possibly one of the stupidest decision, amongst many others, that this government, in its rush to neoliberalize our resources, has ever contemplated. Yet it is not too late to act. I urge you to take a closer look at this deal and its implications for the future. Do you seriously trust the U.S to put the interests of citizens of another country first. Just look at their record since NAFTA - look at the softwood lumber rulings and their total disregard and arrogance in dealing with this matter to OUR satisfaction. This is a rotten deal - it stinks and I'm worried that you won't smell it till it's far too late to do anything about it. Sincerely, Josiane Ochman

Dear Sirs,

I have been reading about the pending sale of Terasen Gas to a US Company. This is absolutely frightening! Will you not be happy until Canada has no control whatsoever over its' resources? This does not bode well for our future! It is pretty obvious that the Americans do not care about what they do, and how it affects others. What will Canada do when we don't have enough natural gas of our own?

The United States has shown their colors quite clearly that they are not interested in playing fair and have absolutely no concern for Canada, whether it be for our beef, our lumber, our water, or our natural gas.

Wake up and smell the coffee!!! It is time to put a stop to this!

The money that was invested by the people of British Columbia should not be wasted by giving up this precious public resourse to those who would exploit it to the ends of a foreign power.

Stopselling my country to the highest bidder! And when they sue us as part of aprovision of NAFTA, tell them to go to hell.

Sincerely,

Paul Tones

Sirs,

This sale is a betrayal of British Columbian interests, and nothing less than an act of treason. We have already been informed that a pending request for price increases will double the cost of heating with natural gas to our consumers, most of whom (for example pensioners) will not receive any compensation or increase in benefits.

True, my mother owns her house, but she still has to eat. Others aren't in such fortunate circumstances.

Say no to the sale.

yours truly

Richard Smiley

Subject: Terasen Sale to American Company-- Public Hearings

Dear Sir/Madam, I respectfully urge you to hold public hearings about the possible sale of Terasen Gas to an American company (Texas-based Kinder-Morgan). It is obvious why this purchase is of interest to Americans but what about doing what is best for British Columbians? This is our utility and our resource. The public needs a say in it's sale. B.C. needs to maintain control of the pipelines. Our control over this important resource is at stake here. Again I strongly urge you to hold public hearings into the possible sale of Terasen Gas. Thank you for considering my request. Sincerely, Steve Coffin 3886 Phyllis Road North Vancouver, BC

I am writing to protest the sale of Terasen Gas to the US company Kinder Morgan. The sale must be approved by the BC Utilities Commission which will hold hearings on the sale and so it is still possible to stop.

My Specific Concern: I believe that we as canadians should retain at least some of our own natural resources. We do not wish to become americans or to be controlled by them.Let us keep at least som eof our country ours.

Please add these small but significant voices to the growing out-cry of the potential sale of Terasen Gas to the American multinational Kinder Morgan. As 2nd and 3rd generation BC’ers we strongly feel that this sale will only just further weaken our ability as British Columbians to control our own destiny overall. Terasen Gas remaining in the hands of British Columbians for the long term is more of a benefit to each and every citizen rather than a select few wealthy CEO’s. At this point we would politely ask that the BCUC stop this sale at once to allow British Columbians a continuation of control of what is inherently the citizens of British Columbia to begin with. We also would like to point out that there was no mandate for the current British Columbian Government to sell off this public asset. With such high stakes at risk here, at the very least there should have been a province wide referendum on this very important issue. I request that you review your decision to not hold public meetings for the selling of B.C.'s gas utilities to other than a B.C. controlled company. I would like some information on the advantages and disadvantages of selling Terasen Gas to interests outside of BC. And, I would like to know why you think it would be in the best interests of the citizens of BC to sell Terasen Gas, if that, in fact is what you are planning on allowing.
