Madison Early Music Festival July 9–16, 2011

El Nuevo Mundo: The Age of Exploration in the New WorldThe University of Wisconsin–Madison is pleased to announce the 12th annual Madison Early Music Festival and Workshop. The Festival was created to provide an opportunity for musicians, scholars, teachers and early music enthusiasts to gather and exchange information and ideas about Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music, and to bring acclaimed early music artists to the Midwest to perform in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin. There are opportunities for everyone, from those who simply enjoy listening to concerts and lectures to early music scholars. Performance opportunities are available for amateurs through professionals. All listeners, singers, players, and dancers are welcome!

The 12th Madison Early Music Festival (MEMF) explores the fusion of cultures and music in the New World during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Long-established European music brought to the New World by 16th-century Spanish conquistadors, minstrels and Jesuit missionaries was flavored by the indigenous American people with the spicy rhythmic folk sonorities of guitars, harps and percussion. Our voyage will take us across the Atlantic and from Mexico to Peru, from lavish cathedral churches to bustling city streets. The annual All-Festival Concert, conducted by Kristina Boerger of Carroll University, will include large- and small-scale choral and instrumental pieces to recreate a Nativity Vespers service at the Puebla Cathedral (Mexico).

In addition to the seven-concert Festival Concert Series (see next page), Workshop classes provide opportunities to learn and practice instrumental and vocal skills, become familiar with historical performance practices and repertoire, learn about the featured music through the lenses of history and culture, and perform with other participants alongside faculty artists. Coaching sessions are available for pre-formed groups and for consorts that are formed at the Workshop.

The UW-Madison School of Music hosts the Madison Early Music Festival. All events take place in the ample facilities of the Mosse Humanities Building in the heart of the campus, close to the attractions of downtown Madison and Lake Mendota.
