Hello All !!!! It's been another busy month in February, so here is my recap: • February 15th the Divan held a called meeting with the Finance Committee and we assessed our investments. It appears as if we will be making a few changes and we hope to be making them soon. • February 18th was my first stated meeting as Potentate and knowing it I was still a little nervous and lost my train of thought for a bit, but with the help of our great office staff and Recorder who kept me in line with their paperwork, I made it through! Much thanks to Mary Lou and Grant for a job well done. We also had some fun during the meeting with a 50/50 cash drawing which ironically, I won! ! Woohoo! ! However, I donated the proceeds back to the Temple. We had some good fellowship that evening and the Ladies had a good time as well. I am looking forward to the next stated meeting which will be held in Beaumont at the Nobles building. • February 21st The Braz-clowns hosted the Hospital Birthday Party in Galveston which was well attended by all three clown units and Divan members. Our entertainment for the evening consisted of a one man Mariachi (Gino), who sang and danced for the patients and their families. We closed out the evening with Diamond Don and his wonderful magic show. Thank you Don Bill-

ings for your entertaining presentation. • February 23rd was the Shriner Hospital Mardi Gras parade on the strand in Galveston. Again, it was well attended. We had a full crew on the Nem-Loof fire truck and an additional truck for the rest of us. To the Shriners, their Ladies and family, your presence was truly appreciated. • March 1st the Builders Club in Santa Fe held their Annual Crawfish Boil Fundraiser. We had to wait in long lines just to eat, but the 4 lbs of crawfish and trimmings for me was well worth it. Good job to the Builders Club for getting the community involved. Unfortunately, this same evening I was not able to attend the Shriners Dance in Beaumont, but I am looking forward to hearing about all the great fun that was had by all that participated. • March 2nd was the Children's Mardi Gras Parade along the seawall in Galveston. In attendance were the Model T Unit, Kaos Clowns, Arabia, myself and my family. My son-in-law Mark drove a 5 ton military truck to get through the crowds and we tossed approximately $500.00 worth of beads. A great time was had by all. • March 4th was Fat Tuesday, and I HOP day. This was the busiest I have ever seen Lake Jackson I HOP. The staff was so overwhelmed with customers that each and every Braz-clown stepped up and started seating the people, bussing tables and even I spent quite a bit of time washing dishes. We made it through the day and collected more than last year. Great job to everyone and my heartfelt appreciation to each and every one who worked at any participating IHOP. Ok, some of you are out there selling gun raffle tickets for the Temple fundraiser which I am sponsoring. We have 2 tickets taped in the show case at the Temple which I want to use as an incentive. Ticket #001 will be given to the Noble who sells the most tickets. Ticket #500 will go to the Noble who brings in the most Shriners who left us for whatever reason or another or any new Noble. But they have to be voted on and paid before our May stated meeting. So allow me to reiterate and say again

" L E T S G E T MEMBERSHIP BACK UP"! And by saying this, the Divan has voted for my year 2014, to take any Noble that has gone suspended for non-payment, to waive the past two years if they will pay their 2014 year only. But they must call in to the Temple and handle this matter accordingly. Future events will be listed in our calendar and the web site of E1 Mina Shriners. In which we owe a big Thank You to O.G Richard Rennison for taking charge. Gotowww.elminashriners.org Also, keep in mind the Birthday parties at the Shriners Burn Hospital in Galveston that are held every 3rd week of each month, except in April and December due to holidays. April 11, 2014 and December 12, 2014

In closing, a hope that you all find this informative and know that I appreciate each and every one of you. Fraternally Yours, ^ ^ w * ^ Illustrious Sir Willie "Chilly" Howell ^ » * « V

PASSING THE BATON As spring settles in, several annual activities gain momentum. Schools across the country conduct track meets, and at least one organization concludes one calendar year and begins another.

My brother was an outstanding track star on a very good Texas high school team. He ran the relays, and he told me that no matter how fast the runners were, there were two things that were necessary in order to win. The initial runner had to get out of the blocks smoothly. The second requirement was that each runner had to pass the baton successfully to the next member of his relay team. Then, of course, the receiving runner had to hang onto that baton and finish his run smoothly. When all of this worked, and the runners used their natural athletic ability for speed, they were in a position to win the race.

In Daughters of the Nile we end a year of service with our elections and installation of officers in March. The new race is on! It is important for the new officers to get out of the blocks smoothly and demonstrate all the leadership qualities and compassion (given the nature of our reason for existence) God gave them. Delay compromises the outcome. Also important to remember: a group of relay runners are a team within a team: every member of that team must perform up to speed if they are to win the race. Watching the grace and skill of athletes at a track meet is inspiring. So many lessons can be learned and applied to other aspects of our life. I have made the connection with the performance a corps of officers in Daughters of the Nile produces. There are spectators at a track meet to cheer the races being run. And there are spectators watching what we do as an organization serving the cause of the children in the Shriners Hospitals. Knowing this should inspire us to get that second wind that enables us to cross the finish line as winners. We usually get it right, and thus we enjoy a well-earned reputation as a service organization. In Ramallah Temple the baton has been passed. We have elected and installed a new corps of officers, and they are off and running. The new queen is Debra Harper, and she is ably served by these line officers: Irene Coulter, Dee Denis and Glenda Grubbs. Iris Lowe and Nina Beth Hughes continue to serve as recorder and banker. This is a strong team, and the Temple is in good hands. All of these women come from strong Masonic families, and there is no need to explain further how important this is in providing an example of how to serve on a team and run a race well And how to recognize that as part of a team, each participant is important, but the sum is greater than its parts.

I wish I had been the first to coin the phrase "there is no I in team" but I am glad someone said it because it is true. Ramallah Temple has a great team in place and a new race is on! — Gay Sauer, Junior Past Queen

Silsbee Shrine Club Our new officers for Silsbee Shrine club are:

President: Lester Smith 1st Vice President: William Schroeter 2nd Vice President: Jim Pennington Vice President: Pete Boutte Secretary/Treasurer: Cecil Arnold

New officers were installed by Doug Jones, 1st Ceremonial Master, designated by the Illustrious Potentate. Meeting held at Beaumont Shrine Building and 1/2 grilled chicken with all the trimmings was served to 23 attending. Divan representative Lester Smith gave the shrine report and a good time was had by all. Lester Smith, President-Silsbee Shrine Club Lester Smith, EI Mina Treasurer

Greetings Lovely Ladies! First Lady Sally Howell, Oriental Guide Lady Elaine Rennison, and I, Chief of Staff Lady Susan Pace, held a meeting with the ladies in attendance during the last stated meeting at the El Mina Shrine Temple in Galveston on Tuesday, February 18,2014. Our Potentate Willie Howell desires to continue to see our Temple's membership grow. An important factor in getting this to happen is to work on our lady involvement, making it fun for our ladies so they will want to become involved and support their husbands in Shrine-related activities. Willie intends to visit the different Lodges to discuss membership growth and present the new ladies' activities and fundraising that will be coming up. These activities will not only be fun and enjoyable and things that women will want to participate in, but will also provide a way for us to raise money to fund future ladies' activities and involvement. We will keep the ladies apprised of all upcoming activities via email notifications. Those who do not have email addresses will receive a hard copy of the email sent to them via regular U.S. Mail. We will obtain email and mailing addresses from Mary Lou Collins. Mary Lou has agreed to place an announcement of upcoming activities in The Mentor monthly. Our El Mina Web Site will be updated accordingly. The following is an outline of the events we currently have scheduled for 2014: Jo Ann Schurwon is making a money wreath. Beginning with the next stated meeting until the end of this year, the ladies will be selling raffle tickets for chances to win the wreath. The drawing will be held at the December 16th Stated Meeting in Galveston. Tuesday, March 18,2014 in Beaumont: Sylvia Garza will be providing a gift basket for raffling at this meeting. The contents of the gift basket will be announced at a later time. Stay tuned! Tuesday, April 15,2014 in Galveston: Elaine Rennison will be providing a wine tasting event for all the ladies. This will be "blind tasting" so it should be a lot of fun. Elaine will also be providing a basket comprised of wines, cheeses, and other goodies for raffling during the meeting Tuesday, May 20,2014 in Galveston: Brenda Easley will be hosting a Scentsy Party for the ladies during this meeting. AScentsy Gift Basket with Scentsy goodies will be provided for raffling. On Saturday, June 28th the ladies will be having a Yard/Bake Sale in the E1 Mina Temple Parking Lot. The sale will be advertised locally in Galveston. There will be a tarp/ cover provided for protection from the sun and any adverse weather should it occur. For those who want to donate items but cannot attend, items can be left during the daytime Monday, June 23 - Friday June 27 at El Mina Shrine Temple in Galveston. Anyone dropping off items early during these hours will need to contact Mary Lou Collins at 409-621 -1117 to arrange a mutually con venient drop off time. The items will be stored in the kitchen area during that week, so park on the south side of the building for convenience in unloading your items for storage until Saturday. Mary Lou must be present to let you inside the Temple. Ladies from El Mina Shrine will be present at the Temple in Galveston the evening of Friday, June 27th from 5:30-8:30p.m. to collect donations. Please be sure ALL sale and baked good items are marked and priced at the time they are delivered to the Temple so they are ready to set out for sale Saturday morning. Tuesday, September 16,2014 in Galveston: Susan Pace will provide a line dance lesson during the stated meeting. Please wear your favorite dancing shoes and be ready to boot scoot! Helen D'Albergo will be providing a gift basket for raffling after the line dance lesson. Tuesday, October 21, 2014 in Beaumont: Beth Wheeler, Carolyn Bedwell, and Nancy Jones will be providing a gift basketfor raffling at the meeting. cont. next page

Tuesday, November 18, 2014 in Galveston: Sylvia Garza will be announcing a special surprise entertainment for the ladies—to be announced at a later date. Stay tuned ladies! Tuesday, December 16,2014 in Galveston: Past Potentate Night and Election of Officers. Raffle tickets for the money wreath will continue to be sold until the closing of the meeting, and the raffle will be held thereafter. Should any monies be remaining from these ladies' activities and fundraising events at the end of 2014, it could be used in one of the following ways: —A year-end party honoring all new, newly-inducted, and existing ladies in celebration of all our El Mina Shrine Ladies' participation and involvement; —should Beth Wheeler decide she would like to continue the ladies' program, all remaining monies could be turned over to her for future events', —A final donation to Shriner's Hospital in Sally's name. These are just a few suggestions. A final decision can be decided/voted upon at the end of the year. We are looking forward to the activities outlined above and anticipate a very fun and exciting year for our Shriner Ladies! Best Regards, Susan Imhoff Pace

Calling all retired Nobles. Are you looking for fun and adventure? Can you take one week every three months from fishing or golf! Then we have a deal for you. And, if you live in east Texas we'll put you up in a hotel in Galveston for the week, wife included. That is, you can bring your wife. We don't supply surrogate wives. We drive Monday through Friday. The only weekends we drive are to take the kids to events like the Harlem Globetrotters. To find out more come to our breakfast meeting every first Tuesday at the IHOPon 1-45 in La Marque (In front of the La Marque Wal-Mart). Since our group has been founded, the Burns Hospital has not had to pay for one van. The money for the vans has been donated by very generous groups, organizations, sports figures, individuals and too many shrine units and clubs to mention here. Our hospital is the only one who doesn't have to pay for their vans or contract drivers. In February we transported 156 patients plus their escorts to and from the hospital. Interested? Call Zoll Collins at 832-289-6377.
