a) THERE ARE HUGE AMOUNTS OF RENEWABLE AND ACCESSIBLE

ENERGY AROUND US

For years we have been wondering "What will happen when the oil runs

out?" and the answer was "nothing to do”. When the oil runs out there will

be a great collapse. Above suited those who sell oil. That statement is

false. Examples:

a) In the island with an area of 275 km2, a small strip of 0.1 km2

for the use of wind and storage facility produces 10 MW, while our average

consumption is 4.5 MW.

b) The solar energy falling on the roads in Spain is 22 times

the consumption of the national vehicles fleet, if exploited with current

commercial technology of photovoltaic panels with a efficiency of 13%,

obtaining 100 W/m2, and calculating only 4 effective working hours per day.

1. WE (ALL COMMUNITIES) HAVE CAPITAL TO BE OWNERS OF THE

ENERGY.

It is essential to be aware of the money currently spent on each island, in

every city, every county, in fuels for mobility. This money leaves the local

economy and we will not recover it.

a) In the case of El Hierro, with a fleet of 5,997 vehicles and an

average weekly expenditure of € 30 per vehicle each year 9.3 M€ are

extracted from the island's economy. This means that in seven years we can

pay an investment of 65.4 M €, of which we can allocate the following items to

the actions shown below:

1. RE Generation 6 M €

2. Batteries and RE Accumulation 37.5 M €

3. Electric Cars purchase support 17.9 M €

4. Recharging Infrastructure 4 M €

b) We have the capital for the investment in energy generation and

accumulation as we are now spending such amount. We need to design, in

addition, a temporary investment strategy and changing actions that take into

account the capital interests and local institutions that will manage the system.

In El Hierro, the public company that manages the energy generation is Gorona

del Viento SA, and we will create another one to be in charge of managing the

accumulation and selling of Energy.

4 .- TO CONCEIVE THE QUESTION AS A SYSTEM

ALLOWS THE PROCUREMENT OF IMPORTANT

FREE BENEFITS: In the case of El Hierro these are:

- 57.6 MW of energy stored in the Batteries

Recharge Centres, which can be used promptly to bring

stability to the network and improve service quality

- A large water storage of 350,000 m3 for the

Hydraulic System – Desalination plants of the island,

which allows to stop the desalination activity in times of

high demand and little wind (the desalination plants

consume 40% of electricity in the island).

- 9.3 M € / year for investment and improving

the quality of life for 10,500 people.

- Generation of employment due to mobility

system change and innovation.

- Technological and sustainability tourism

that visits the island interested on this experience

Page 114: El hierro island. local economy, sustainability and mobility. pécs

In short:- We have abundant energy, clean and accessible in large quantities around us

under different forms.

- We have enough capital to invest on:

- Renewable energy generation

- To build the infrastructure for recharging batteries of electric cars

- To buy rechargeable batteries

- To pay the user part of the cost of electric cars

- To pay part of the leasing or the cost of the batteries of electric cars

That capital is the money we already spend daily in fossil fuels

- Beeing the owners of the energy. In order to generate sustainable progress

and create the appropriate cycles in the economy of each area is essential that local

governments are the owners of the renewable energy of their territory. That is an

important funding source for Sustainable Development Projects

- The systems approach shows important advantages. When we conceive our

territories as systems and we talk not only about energy but also about water,

mobility, food, education, business, sustainability, etc.. we will find better solutions

and more profitability as a whole and in each of the actions

Page 115: El hierro island. local economy, sustainability and mobility. pécs
