EIT’s libraries put resources at your fingertips, with expert librarians on-hand to help you, and you can get your textbooks and stationery sorted at Ōtātara Bookshop at the Hawke's Bay Campus. Get connected by jumping onto campus-wide free wifi.

You can also print your work professionally with our fully-equipped printing services (Reprographics) who handle everything from large format printing to document binding, for a price that won’t put a dent in your finances.

Hungry after all your study? You can enjoy bustling campus cafés and student training cafés to catch up with fellow students over a cup of coffee or lunch.

F I V E

Some people know exactly what they want to do in life, so choosing what to study is much easier. They know what they are good at; they know their strengths and how they want to use them.

But for many people it’s not so easy. There are lots of courses, many different jobs, and plenty of career choices out there. So making the right decision about what to study can seem daunting.

It’s important to get lots of information to help you make a well-informed decision. A good place to start is the Government’s Careers NZ website at careers.govt.nz.

It’s a good idea to think about what you’re interested in. Spend some time thinking about what you like and don’t like, and what you’re good at.

If you have a profession in mind, you could talk to people who are working in the industry. They can tell you which skills, experience and qualifications you need.

You may find that you have knowledge, skills or previous achievements that can count towards your qualification.

At EIT, we’ve got lots of experience supporting students make important decisions and pointing them in the right direction.

Come and have a chat with us. We can put you in touch with programme coordinators and arrange an appointment to talk with the careers counsellor about career, training and education choices.

&For those with no formal qualifications or who have been away from study for a while, our entry level certificates are a unique opportunity to progress further into higher level programmes, and eventually to a degree. Or you can go straight into an entry level job position in the first step to a new career.

We also offer vocational study that is tailored to the region's specific requirements, meaning you are qualified and work-ready to get local in-demand jobs.

You no longer have to leave home to get a recognised degree as our degrees (called ‘Bachelors’) are absolutely equal to those offered at New Zealand universities. In fact, EIT graduates are viewed by local employers to be as good as graduates from anywhere else.

Our postgraduate offerings mean you don’t have to travel and miss out on work or family to further your career.

However you define your success, when you study at EIT we’ll give you the experiences and support you need, to help you achieve it.

What's the difference between EIT a university?

Megan Woollard, Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy Graduate (Hawke's Bay Campus)

Megan Woollard DIPLOMA IN BEAUTY AND BODY THERAPY

EIT graduate Megan Woollard always had a fascination for beauty and make-up. Growing up she used to make concoctions out of her mum’s blushers and powders and experimented with creams and cosmetics.

After Megan finished high school, she enrolled into a two-year Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy. During her second year Megan applied for a job at Caci Clinic in Havelock North. Megan was employed as a part-time beauty therapist, which after her graduation led to a full-time role.

“What I love most about my job are the different opportunities to upskill and the connections that I create with my clients. It all runs on a friendship basis. It’s wonderful to give people skin confidence, document their skin journey and advise them on nutrition, lifestyle options and skin care routines.” Megan has also taken over the Hawke’s Bay representative for the NZ Association of Registered Beauty Professionals. “Since my graduation it has been a non-stop journey,” she admits.

Russell BoothBUSINESS LECTURER, DEGREE PROGRAMME COORDINATIONWhat were you doing before you came back to EIT? I moved to Auckland and worked at the University of Auckland Careers Centre for 18 months and also ran my own career consultancy business – which I still do but mostly back in Hawke’s Bay now. I have been involved with EIT off and on for over 20 years – can’t stay away!

How is your course linked to the needs of industry? I’m programme coordinator for the Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS). The course I really like on the BBS is Organisations in a NZ Context – where we look at Te Tiriti o Waitangi and specifically why many organisations don’t adhere to the Treaty principles. For many students the course clears up a lot of questions they have and gives them a better appreciation of how business can operate within the principles.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at EIT? The huge variety of the people who work and study here. Being self-employed can be quite isolating so I love big work places and the chance to chat to everyone.

Samantha Down BACHELOR OF

COMPUTING SYSTEMSSamantha Down is great example of how career paths don’t always have to be a steady ascent. After finishing high school, Sam felt she needed to get out of Napier and moved to Brisbane. For the seven years that followed, she was in a kind of limbo where she worked in various jobs, studied social work for a while but never really knew what she wanted to do.

After Sam had moved back home she started to narrow down her options. Initially worrying about not being smart enough, she eventually enrolled into the EIT Bachelor of Computing Systems.

Juggling three parallel jobs while studying full-time, she started an internship with Devine Technology and was soon snapped up as a full-time business intelligence data analyst. She is one of many EIT computing students that secured employment from their internship placements. “I really like data. Data doesn’t lie,” says Sam. Sam is now continuing her studies and is enrolled in the postgraduate programme.

Mike WilliamsESL TUTOR

ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE

Can you tell us something about your educational journey?

I was a chef for twenty years in New Zealand, Australia, France, England, and the Pacific Islands before I completed my first English Language teaching qualification and was offered a job at EIT in 2002. Since then I have completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics, and I also have qualifications in literacy and editing.

I find language fascinating and I believe learning English should be fun. Of course, it is also hard work, but in my classes I want students to enjoy themselves as they learn English grammar, writing, reading, speaking, pronunciation, listening, and reading.

I do this job because I like nothing better than to see students making progress and achieving their goals. These could be living in New Zealand, finding work, or passing the New Zealand Certificate in English Language to enter another study programme.

This is why I love working at EIT.

And then the day came when the 37-year-old applied for a commis chef’s role at Mangapapa Hotel, the place that she always wanted to work. She got the job and it changed her life.

From the first moment Rachael and head chef Norka Mella Munoz, were like peanut butter and jelly. “Since I’ve started to study and then work so many doors opened up for me. I’ve never been happier in my life.”

MEET THE LECTURER

Tom PierardMUSIC LECTURER

Were you always passionate about music?I knew I loved music from an early age, but it wasn’t until I took the step of studying a Bachelor of Music that I knew I wanted it to be my career. It’s amazing how quickly you learn to focus on your craft and develop musically when you’re surrounded by it 24/7!

What's the best thing about working at EIT?

Definitely the best thing about working here is the people. Everyone is really committed to the quality of the programmes and to the students – and it shows, because everyone is willing to go the extra mile. The other thing I love about it is the location. It’s close to my family and friends, and I know that if I need it, family support is just down the road.

How can students benefit from having you as a teacher?

Like the other music staff, I’m a big believer in both embracing all musical styles, but also being open minded about new approaches in music production and performance. I always like to keep my class content as current as possible, and like to encourage originality and integrity in students’ songwriting.

Sahn WhiunuiTE REO

MĀORI TUTOR(HAWKE'S BAY)

How did your EIT journey start? I started studying Level 2 Te Reo Māori in 2012, worked through the certificates, degree and honours, graduating in 2017. During the last year on my degree, I began working for EIT.

Now I’m a permanent member on the day class team, teaching the Level 3 Certificate in Te Reo Māori. Learning Te Reo has enriched my life in so many ways.

What’s the best thing about working at Te Ūranga Waka? Doing what I love every day, passing the knowledge and my experiences on to others, watching students on their journey and seeing their passion grow. My passion is now my job.

Why are EIT’s Te Reo Māori programmes so popular? I think a lot of Māori people are really interested in connecting back with their culture which includes the language. Also as society is trying to incorporate and normalise Māori more into everyday living, workplaces etc. This has made the demand increase also.

Hinemoana TautariTE TOI NGĀ RANGI -

BACHELOR OF MĀORI VISUAL ARTS AT EIT’S TOIHOUKURA,

TAIRĀWHITI CAMPUS

Northland student Hinemoana Tautari is currently enrolled in the Māori Visual Arts Degree at EIT’s Toihoukura in Tairāwhiti.

Hinemoana is from Nga Puhi subtribe Te Hikutu and grew up in the small community of Hokianga. “My family were a bit scared about me moving away but they did not want me to stay there and do nothing either,” she said.

She originally planned to study art at the Elam School of Fine Arts at Auckland University, but her art teacher Michelle Morunga, who was also her aunty and mentor, recommended Toihoukura.

She is glad she took her advice. “I have already learned so much this year,” Hinemoana says. Most of the work she has completed has sold, which is one of the ultimate compliments for an artist. “It is very exciting to sell your work and I was able to buy a plane ticket home to see my family.”

At this stage Hinemoana thinks she will go to Wellington to do her teaching diploma, and maybe after that do some travel once she has finished her degree.

She has been awarded a Year 13 scholarship which means that after her first year Government fees free, she will have to pay for only the third year of the degree programme.

Danielle WilliamsBACHELOR OF NURSING

If there is a nursing gene, it undoubtedly runs in the Williams family. Danielle Williams, the youngest of the Hawke’s Bay dynasty of nurses, last year graduated from her Bachelor of Nursing at EIT. Her mother Chrissie has been a nurse for the past 30 years. She too followed in her own mother Barbara’s footsteps, who again pursued the same career as her late mother Maud Mackie. Maud was one of the first nurses on the scene after the devastating Napier earthquake.

Danielle always knew that she wanted to become a nurse. “I saw the joy and the satisfaction that my mum gained from her work. It was inspiring.” After her graduation Danielle took up a role at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton in the Haematology and Oncology department. This specialised area offers her a lot of additional education and learning opportunities.

The women agree that the connection you build with patients is an integral part of the healing process. “Sometimes it’s even more important to help their relatives, give them a hug or a shoulder rub,” says Danielle. YOUR CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

As a registered nurse, clinical nurse specialist, registered nurse prescriber or nurse practitioner your career will be highly rewarding. You’ll experience challenges and variety as you make a positive difference in people's lives.

EIT offers opportunities to connect with industry through work placement, while completing the qualification and gaining a Class 4 or 5 licence.

The lucrative and rapidly expanding apiculture industry needs more beekeepers. World markets can’t get enough of NZ honey, especially Manuka honey. Demand for pollination services also continues to increase with NZ’s primary industry dependent on the healthy pollination of fruit and crops for its survival.

Maewa Para AGRICULTURE TUTOR (TAIRĀWHITI CAMPUS)

How did you become a tutor at EIT? I was employed as a tutorial assistant by what was then Tairāwhiti Polytechnic in 2009. I worked with a great team promoting and delivering rural safety programmes in rural communities. In 2011, I was provided an opportunity to become a tutor. I took it and have never looked back.

What can students learn from you? I teach them the delivery of health and safety practices when working with agricultural machinery or vehicles which is imperative.

What do you enjoy most about working at EIT?I have the privilege to offer and deliver free programmes to local and rural communities which allows me to meet some fantastic people.

What jobs did you have before you started at EIT? I worked as both corporate travel consultant and check-in staff for Air New Zealand for a number of years. I also worked for Tourism NZ overseas, and with a tour company organising group tours all around the world.

How do you prepare your students for working in the “real world”? All our programmes include industry guest speakers and lots of site visits. Our level 5 diploma students undertake work experience and this often leads to ongoing employment. We also have high expectations in the classroom around attendance, timekeeping, deadlines, dress standards and professional behaviour to prepare students for what this industry expects of them.

What exciting careers can graduates get in the tourism industry? The tourism industry is so varied. Our graduates are employed in all sorts of areas including flight attending, information centres, tour guiding and accommodation. We even have graduates involved in organising tours for cruise ship passengers and tourism marketing. The sky is literally the limit.

Dr Chandre HonethWINE SCIENCE LECTURER

MEET THE LECTURER

Where does your interest for wine and wine science come from? My attraction to the field of viticulture and wine science and my consequent career stemmed from an interest in biology, chemistry and geography. It was not a big leap to see the link between these subjects and my appreciation for a good glass of wine. My studies started in 2007 and I have been entrenched in the field ever since with absolutely no regrets.

What were you doing before you came to EIT?Before I came to EIT, I was doing my PhD in Viticulture at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

How can students benefit from achieving the Bachelor of Viticulture & Wine Science? This is an absolutely fantastic and interesting field to work in. The course offers essential theoretical knowledge paired with practical hands-on experience to provide the necessary skills for young winemakers and viticulturists to enter the industry. The viticulture and soil science courses, which I am involved with, really allow students to get up close and personal with the soil and the vines. We spend plenty of time in the EIT vineyard as well as in vineyards around Hawke’s Bay where students are able to connect with industry.
