EPS PROPERTIES

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a lightweight cellular plastic material consisting of small hollow spherical balls. It is this closed cellular construction that gives EPS its remarkable characteristics. EPS is produced in a wide range of densities providing a varying range of physical properties. These are matched to the various applications where the material is used to optimize its performance and strength.

EPS is widely used in many everyday building situations where its lightweight, strength and thermal insulation characteristics provide cost effective high performance solutions. Large blocks of EPS (typically 6000 x 1200 x 600 mm) are cut, shaped or bonded to provide the following products and applications: - insulation for cold storage buildings - insulated rendered wall systems - lightweight fill used in civil engineering applications such as roadways and bridge on/off ramps

- lightweight cores for bridge beam construction - floatation for pontoons and marinas - insulation for wine tanks and pipe work - insulation for buildings with or without reflective foil facings - theme for movie sets and amusement parks - insulated concrete form (ICF) for buildings (cut from block or custom molded) - decorative architectural moldings for building applications - floatation for boats, jet ski and surfboards

EPS also offers the following benefits when used as a packaging material for goods such as produce, seafood and electrical appliances: - low density, therefore lightweight packages - ability to absorb high levels of energy when dropped or subjected to impact - low thermal conductivity protects contents against sudden temperature changes - chemically inert and therefore can be safely used for food packaging - strength and durability is completely retained even on direct contact with water

EPP APPLICATIONS

EPP is widely utilised by automotive manufacturers because of its performance benefits for energy management, lightweight, enhanced functionality, durability and recyclability. Applications include seating, bumpers, stowage systems, door panels, pillars, floor levelers, parcel shelves, head rests, tool kits, sun visors and myriad filler parts. Reusable industrial packaging, known as dunnage, is frequently made from EPP due to its durability and its inherent ability to absorb energy in transit. EPP is used increasingly in furniture, toys such as model aircraft and other consumer products due to its versatility as a structural material and its light weight, as well as other performance characteristics. EPP is approved for use in conjunction with food products. Its thermal insulation properties and structural strength make it appropriate for containers such as food delivery containers and beverage coolers and the like. EPP does not support microbial growth and can be made sterile with steam cleaning.
