School News
Welcome to fall! The
weather has been giving us
some very beautiful days.
As the weather begins to
turn cooler please make
sure your child is dressed
appropriately for the days
forecasted weather. Many
coats and jackets are start-
ing to find their way to our
lost and found box near the
office. Please rummage
through the box for any
missing clothing that may
have escaped from your
child at recess.
As we start the month of
October we should see our
students starting to devel-
oping a routine for school and
homework. I would like to
point out a couple of educa-
tional websites that will allow
your child additional practice
in various subject areas as well
as provide an opportunity to
challenge themselves to a
higher level.
One math website I have found
to be very informative and
useful is http://www.ixl.com
The “ I excel” website allows
you to choose the Nebraska
Math standards by grade level
and then gives the learner
math practice items that fall
within the scope of those stan-
dards to practice working
on. Students have the ability
to go back and brush up on
items they need more prac-
tice on as well as go forward
and challenge themselves in
topics they may not have
been introduced to yet.
Another good website for
our younger students is
http://
www.literacycenter.net/
lessonview_en.php
This website allows the
learner to manipulate differ-
ent letters and work with the
sounds, colors, spelling,
position, numbers and basic
Do your kids wipe their feet on you like a doormat? Do you ever find yourself grieving because you've lost the dream of having
kind, appreciative kids?
You're not alone, and there are steps you can take to begin turn-
ing things around.
On a daily basis, remind your-self that you deserve to be treated with the same level of respect with which you treat your kids.
Maintaining this attitude of self-respect gives us the intestinal fortitude to expect respect in a
respectful way.
Don't move on until you've neutralized arguing. This means repeating something like, "I love you too much to argue," instead of getting pulled into a
debate.
When you become good at neutralizing arguments, begin setting small yet completely controllable limits.
Pick small issues that you have total control over. Then set limits you are prepared to enforce. For example: "I'll get that for you
when I hear 'please.'"
Since you've already mastered the ability to stay out of argu-ments, you'll be prepared for
your child's reaction.
Remember to model an as-sertive, respectful and empa-thetic attitude.
When we've been treated badly by our kids, it's easy to fall into the trap of providing conse-quences with a "get-even" attitude. If we do, our kids will
sense this and rebel.
Begin to set progressively larger limits.
When our youngsters begin to

see that we can handle smaller situations without backing-down or losing our cool, it becomes easier to set and enforce limits over big is-
sues.
The key to rebuilding respect from our kids involves proving to them that we can handle them without getting frus-trated or angry. In my CD, Oh Great! What do I do now?, I provide more prac-
tical tips for making this happen.
Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a

MUSIC PROGRAM ―NOTES‖
Program dates:
Nov. 15 – Washington
Nov. 16 – Eisenhower
Dear Parents: Our programs will have a new venue this year! We will be performing at the
Performing Arts Center at the High School. Each building will have two programs in one
night – K, 2nd and 4th will perform at 6:30, and 1st, 3rd, and 5th will perform the same pro-
gram at 7:30. If possible, have your student wear red, white and blue, or red and green. This
will be our only performance this year, so please take a few moments to help your student learn
the lyrics for the program. The students and I appreciate your participation and assistance! I
will send home reminders closer to program time. If you would like a packet of the music to play
the songs on your piano at home, just let me know!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

Class parties are scheduled for Oc-
tober 29th at 2:50 p.m. Room moth-
ers will arrange for refreshments
and activities for parties.
Students will not be wearing cos-
tumes as costumes often distract
students from learning and are
not designed for a students to
participate in the daily routine of
school. Students will have ample
opportunities to proudly display
their costumes on Halloween
since it is a non school day.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Later that evening Dad
talked to Travis. "Travis, are
you calling the other kids
names during recess?"
"No."
"Well, your teacher says
you are. Now what's the
story?"
"I don't know. She's lying."
If you know a child did
something, don't set him up
to lie by asking about it.
This was Dad's mistake.
Kids, like most adults, will
lie to protect themselves.
Since Dad knew that the
name-calling was happening
A dad got a call from his
son’s teacher, "Mr. Jenkins,
you’ve got to do something
about Travis. He's been call-
ing other kids names during
recess and it's causing a lot
of trouble. I think you need
to have a talk with him."
"Well, Mrs. Alexander, are
you sure? Have you seen
him doing that or are you
just taking the word of the
other kids?"
"I'm sorry, but I've wit-
nessed it myself, otherwise I
wouldn't have called."
"Ok, I'll have a talk with
him. Thanks."
it would have been better to
handle it by saying, "Travis, I
know that you've been call-
ing the other kids names dur-
ing recess. I expect it to
stop." Travis will still try to
get out of it with, "But I'm
not."
Dad's response should be,
"We're not talking about that.
What did I say about it?"
Travis may still continue to
try to protect himself with
denials and Dad's job is to
continue to say, "I know and
what did I say about that?"

This is my second year as an elementary
school librarian and my thirty third year
in education. After teaching high school
English for many years, a change to
something different has been very re-
freshing, fun and fascinating! This is a
great opportunity for me to share my
passion for all types of books and learn-
ing with lots of great children.

PTA Memberships
Please remember to send in your PTA membership as soon as possible. We are
running our membership drive until the end of October. An individual member-
ship costs only $6 per person. We encourage moms and dads both to join! By join-
ing, you show your support for PTA and all of the activities we hold including Fun
Night, Talent Show, Back to School Bash, Teacher Appreciation Week, etc…the list
goes on and on!
Currently we have 67 members. IF we get 100 memberships, PTA will purchase a
video camera for our students and staff to use. A few years ago we purchased a
digital camera which has come in very handy for our newsletters, and slideshow
productions. This purchase will help our kids learn even more about technology
and how to use it effectively!!
ALSO…all classes who have 75% participation get an ice cream party. If no one
achieves that goal, we will sponsor a party for the class with the most member-
ships. The tally stands as follows:
Kindergarten 23 memberships (goal is 32)
First Grade 22 memberships (goal is 32)
Second Grade 9 memberships (goal is 22)
Third Grade 20 memberships (goal is 29)
Fourth Grade 9 memberships (goal is 28)
Fifth Grade 9 memberships (goal is 26)
Remember…If your teacher joins, the grade gets credit. If two parents join, each of
their students gets credit for two memberships.
IF you need a membership form, please see Linda…we have extras in the PTA mail-
box!
