This grammar provides a comprehensive overview of Middle Egyptian and illus-trates its grammatical features with extensive examples from various sources. Exercises at the end of each chapter, along with a sign list and a hieroglyphic word list, provide the reader with the means to apply and practice the content, enabling this book to be used as both a grammar reference and a textbook.

The book’s structure and detailed outline facilitate its use as a reference, making it easy to find information on any particular grammatical feature. At the same time, the extensive content of the forty chapters provides a suitable basis for self-guided study and enables the student to read and understand Egyptian inscrip-tions and literary texts in hieroglyphic transliteration. Recent developments in the understanding of Egyptian are exemplified in numerous quotations from Egyptian texts, and exercises at the end of each chapter provide further opportunity for considering the grammatical phenomena discussed in the chapter, allowing for both practice and review. For reasons of convenience, the vocabulary necessary for the exercises, along with the words used in the examples, are arranged into a word list at the end of the book. Similar and alternative grammatical constructions are compared, and in addition to the “classical” language of the Middle Kingdom, the book considers both Old Egyptian and Late Egyptian influences.

As a hybrid reference and textbook, this volume introduces the reader to the grammatical features of Middle Egyptian and illustrates the means of expression used in ancient Egyptian.

Peter Beylage is an independent scholar and specialist in the languages and archaeology of ancient Egypt.

e Dragon, the Mountain, and the Nations investigates the origins, manifestations, and meanings of a myth that plays a major role in the Hebrew Bible and a substantial role in the New Testament: the dragon-slaying myth.

e dragon-slaying myth has a hoary ancestry, extending back long before its appearance in the Hebrew Bible, and a vast range, spanning as far as India and perhaps even Japan. is book is a chronicle of its trajectories and permutations. e target of this study is the biblical myth. is target, however, is itself a uid tradition, responding to and reworking extrabiblical myths and reworking its own myths. In this study, Robert Miller examines the dragon and dragon-slaying myth throughout India, the proto-Indo-European cultures, and Iran, and among the Hittites as well as other ancient Near Eastern and Mesopotamian traditions, and then throughout the Bible, including Genesis, the Psalms, Daniel, and ultimately the New Testament and the book of Revelation. He shows how the myth pervades many cultures and many civilizations and that the dragon is always conquered, despite its many manifestations. In his conclu-sion, Miller points out the importance of the myth as a hermeneutic for understanding key parts of biblical literature.

Enemies and Friends of the StateAncient Prophecy in ContextEdited by Christopher A. Rollston

Within the world of the Bible, prophets and prophetesses were sometimes ardent proponents of royal and priestly rhetoric and deeds, but they could also be vocal critics, speaking truth to power. “Lengthen Your Tent-Cords”The Metaphorical World of Israel’s Household in the Book of IsaiahBrittany Kim

The last few decades have seen a gradual shift in Isaianic studies as scholars are beginning to give greater attention to the book’s lit-erary features rather than focusing predominantly on the question of its sources. Brittany Kim’s study takes a literary approach, exploring how the book portrays Israel and its capital city using five metaphors that arise from the realm of house-hold relationships: sons/children, daughter(s), mother, wife, and servant(s). Pulling together insights from individual studies, “Lengthen Your Tent-Cords” draws connections and highlights contrasts among the various metaphors. Kim concludes by examining how Israel and Zion fit into YHWH’s royal household.Brittany Kim is Adjunct Professor of Religion at Bethel Seminary.

History and HopeThe Agrarian Wisdom of Isaiah 28–35Daniel J. Stulac

History and Hope examines the rhetorical function of Isaiah 28–35, a relatively overlooked series of six woe oracles, in relation to reading the book of Isaiah as a whole. These eight chapters rely on the language of agrarian wisdom to transport the reader from prior reflections on historical destruction to a vision of ultimate hope. Daniel Stulac’s study, therefore, offers new insight into the book of Isaiah, but perhaps more importantly, it does so through two methodological inno-vations that promise to enhance biblical research at large.Daniel J. Stulac is Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke Divinity School.

The UnfavoredJudah and Saul in the Narratives of Genesis and 1 SamuelJosef Sykora

Following the work of scholars who have attempted to rehabilitate the notion of “chosenness” in the Old Testament or have focused more narrowly on the biblical portrayal of non-Israelites, The Unfavored centers on the role of “unfavored” characters within Israel—specifi-cally, Judah and Saul. Josef Sykora examines two narratives with seemingly opposite trajectories: the Joseph cycle in Genesis 37–50 and the Saul episode in 1 Samuel 13–15. A freshly insight-ful exploration of chosenness in the Old Testament, The Unfavored guides us to new and deeper inter-pretations of these biblical texts. Josef Sykora is Assistant Professor of Biblical Interpretation and the director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Northeastern Seminary.

Trees and KingsA Comparative Analysis of Tree Imagery in Israel’s Prophetic Tradition and the Ancient Near EastWilliam R. Osborne

The Old Testament prophets did not hesitate to use the rhetorical conventions accessible to them when delivering their sermons of salvation and judgment. One source of comparison used frequently in the prophets and widely throughout the ancient Near East is the image of a tree. In Trees and Kings, William Osborne evaluates the cultural and cognitive conditions in which such figura-tive tree imagery arose, drawing on comparative study of ancient Near Eastern tree imagery and the cognitive-linguistic approach of metaphor theory. William R. Osborne is Assistant Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at College of the Ozarks.

Bearing Yhwh’s Name at SinaiA Reexamination of the Name Command of the DecalogueCarmen Joy Imes

The Name Command is usually interpreted as a prohibition against speaking Yhwh’s name in a particular context: false oaths, wrongful pronunciation, irrev-erent worship, magical practices, cursing, false teaching, and the like. However, the Name Command lacks the contextual specification needed to support the command as speech related. Taking seriously the narrative context at Sinai and the closest lexical parallels, a different picture emerges—one animated by concrete rituals and their associated metaphorical concepts. Carmen Joy Imes is Associate Professor in Old Testament and program coordina-tor for Biblical Studies at Prairie College.

The epistle of James was, for years, a forgotten book in academic circles. In recent decades, however, a renewed focus on early Judaism has generated interest in looking at James with new eyes. The pres-ent investigation focuses on how James uses the Old Testament in those passages where he deals with poverty and wealth. In particular, it focuses on how he builds his ethics of poverty and wealth.Nelson R. Morales is Professor of New Testament at Central American Theological Seminary (SETECA).

“I Will Walk Among You”The Rhetorical Function of Allusion to Genesis 1–3 in the Book of LeviticusG. Geoffrey Harper

The well-known parallels between Genesis and Leviticus invite further reflection, particularly in regard to the rhetorical and theological pur-pose of their lexical, syntactical, and conceptual correspondences. This volume investigates the possibility that the final-form text of Leviticus is an indirect reference to Genesis 1–3 and examines the rhetorical significance of such an allusion. This comprehensive study of the connections between these two sections of the Hebrew Bible sheds light on both the literary artistry of these ancient texts and the persua-sive purposes that lie behind their composition.G. In this volume, Tova Forti shows how investi-gation of the poetics of the animal kingdom can elucidate the effect metaphors exert on psalmodic theology. The focus herein on the faunal imagery in Psalms—the literary perception of the animals adduced and the structural and stylistic rhetorical features of the imagery—serves as a lens through which the reader can perceive the poetic dynamics and their impact upon and interaction with the psalm as a prayer.Tova L. Forti is Associate Professor in the Department of Bible Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the author of Animal Imagery in the Book of Proverbs.
