The well was last restored by residents during 1996-7. Shrubbery, brambles and saplings have been removed and some re- pointing of the brickwork carried out. The work has been undertaken voluntarily by Brian Sheppard with additional help from other villagers and sponsorship for materials from the Community Council. The well is one of several in the area associated with the legend of St Eluned who was one of the 24 daughters of Brychan, a 5 th cen- tury king who founded a Celtic Christian dynasty in Roman Brit- ain. Eluned had a suitor, a pagan prince, from whom she tried to escape. She sought sanctuary in Llanddew and was driven out, moving then to Llechfaen where she was similarly rejected. Find- ing her way to the hill fort on Sl- wch Tump she was given refuge. Her suitor caught up with her and as she tried to escape he cut off her head which rolled down the hill and where it came to rest a spring rose up. Her martyrdom gave rise to a local cult that was well established by the time of the Normans arrived in Brecon- shire 5 centuries later. Other well sites associated with St Eluned are at Castell Dinas, Treffeca, Llanddew, Llanfilo and the priory well at Brecon Catherdral. NORMA Higginson, until recently a Council-lor on the Community Council, and her team of ever eager assistants provided a jovial and entertaining evening.

Some 40 or so villag-ers tucked into a table groaning feast which was followed by the village’s own stand up comedian, Derek, who could easily have stolen the limelight at the Edinburgh fringe.

So well done ladies and we now look for-ward to the New Year supper which will be held either in January or February.

Whilst we are on cakes and drink, ev-eryone is welcome to the Groesffordd cof-fee mornings held on the 1st Wednesday of each month where old friends reminisce and new friends are made.

Nothing to do with

food and drink (possi-bly); keep fit classes are run every Wednesday (except coffee morn-ings) in the village hall when, under the caring eye of a very experi-enced trainer, people of all ages and physi-cal abilities are taken through gentle exercises which, as we know, can only do us good. If you are interested please phone Norma on 665781.

Yet another successful autumn village supper

THE bus shelter in Groesffordd, which is used by local school children when waiting for the school bus, has been neglect-ed for a number of years and is looking decidedly in need of love and affection. The Community Council has funds to help restore this monu-ment to 1960’s architecture, what we need now is help from people who are handy with saws, ham-mers and nails and a bit of DIY nous.If you are able to give a hand please contact Bill or Tony your local councillors. Thank you.

Village Hall Bookings

BEING a Community Councillor is a great way to be involved in the local issues that are important to people in the community. In Llanfrynach they are issues such as flooding, access to broadband, speeding, planning applications, the playground, grass-cutting and many more.

There are 9 volunteer councillors; 4 councillors for Llanhamlach, 3

for Llanfrynach and 2 for Cantref. At the moment there are 2 vacancy notices, one for Cantref ward and one for Llanhamlach ward.

The role of Community Councillor is rewarding; you represent your people in issues that matter to them. There are 10 scheduled meetings a year and you would be expected to do some reading about the variety of council

business. It can also be demanding, balancing the strongly held but disparate views of many people, but training is available. Have a think about speaking up for your ward and becoming a Councillor. If you are interested in the role or just want to find out more please contact me on [email protected]. Tel.no. 01874 730 202.
