Only two hours’ drive from the mo-dern city of Gdansk lies the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in northeastern Poland, one of the 16 historical regions into which the country is divided. The province is also evocatively known as the “Land of a Thousand Lakes” or the “Green Lungs of Poland”, due to the more than 2000 bodies of water (connected by navigable canals) and ancient, luxuriant forests that cover the

area. Much like the rest of Poland, the border territory of Warmia-Masuria is a place deeply marked by history, whe-re East meets West and old and new ways of thinking intermingle. Here peoples with different cultures and languages—such as Teutonic knights, ancient Baltic tribes, Poles, Saxons, Silesians and Slavs—have settled at various times down the centuries, sha-ping the heart of modern Europe. But

Poland is also a land that has always embraced the future, even in the dar-kest moments of its history. It was here that Copernicus wrote his heliocentric theory; it was here, in the age of the Sun King when Europe was dominated by absolute monarchies, that the Golden Liberty political system was born — the first experiment with democratic government; and it was here, as early as 1791, that the Polish

Constitution of May was promulgated, one of the first constitutions of its type in the world. This natural instinct for renewal and innovation is also apparent in agri-culture, one of the cornerstones of the Polish economy. After a period of stasis that lasted until the 1990s, the country’s accession to the EU (and

consequent modernisation of farming techniques and machinery) triggered the revival of the industry, especially the livestock sector. It was in this con-text that Agrocentrum was founded in 1992, a company that has since become Poland’s largest producer of milk and feed for livestock.Within the space of just over 25 years,

the company has expanded its pro-duct range and increased its output from 300 tonnes per month to over 7000 tonnes, opening a new plant to meet demand.Today, the two Agrocentrum plants produce 40,000 tonnes of concentra-ted and premixed high-quality forage every month, in addition to 12 million

litres of milk a year. For Agrocentrum, just as for Dieci, continuous innova-tion is the backbone of the business: its laboratories test raw materials, to ensure they are of the highest quality, and research new food blends. Eve-ry day the trucks of the Agrocentrum fleet pass through the gates of the Kałeczyn and Grajewo plants to re-plenish raw material stocks and pick

up deliveries for transporting all over Poland. That is why Agrocentrum has equip-ped itself with two Agri Plus 40.7 VS vehicles (one per plant), which were purchased from Polish Dieci dealer Agro-Rolnik Sp. z o.o. in Sniadowo. Every day for 20 hours, the capabilities of the two Agri Plus 40.7 vehicles are put to the test as they shift hundreds

of tonnes of the highest quality wheat, barley, triticale, rye, oats, maize and rapeseed, which are unloaded into si-los and mixing plants to produce ani-mal feed. The operators are delighted with the vehicles, especially the level of comfort they provide: the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship borders the Baltic regions, so the air conditioning system is particularly appreciated

when the north wind blows (which it does almost every day in winter)! The cab’s other features are also very popular, including the joystick integra-ted into the armrest, the soundproo-fing, the tilt- and height-adjustable ste-ering wheel, the electric windows, the storage compartments and the stereo system (a bit of music while working is always nice!), the ergonomic seat,

the sunshades and sunroof (for the short but hot Polish summers!), the high-visibility raised driver’s seat, the high-efficiency wipers, and the two in-dependent rear view mirrors.Agrocentrum staff have also been im-pressed by how easy the Agri Plus is to use, especially when working on silage in Creeper mode, and by the speed and precision of the boom

movement, even under high load and with the engine running at low speed. The Grajewo plant is currently being expanded with new production lines ready for the introduction of new pro-ducts that are currently under deve-lopment, so it is highly likely that the company’s two Agri Plus models will soon be joined by other vehicles from our new Agricultural Range.

It was with a mixture of relief and regret that we said goodbye to the 2018 edition of Eima International. Re-lief, because participating in such an event requires total commitment that starts well before the opening date, ends several days after the doors clo-se and involves all of the company’s departments full-time, so it is nice to enjoy a momentary breather once it’s all over; but this relief was also tinged

with regret, because we enjoyed a very productive few days at the trade show, in terms of making contact with users, finding out about their daily problems and communicating all the possible solutions we offer. It was also produc-tive thanks to the time we spent on our display, by ensuring that visitors could get their hands on our best products, a strategy that beat any sales presen-tation. And finally, without false mode-

sty, we even felt a hint of pride due to the success of our participation. There was a resoundingly positive response to our New Agri Range vehicles with GD cabin, which we have presented previously, but which continue to at-tract strong interest from both Italian and foreign operators. Then there was the overwhelming success of the la-test addition to our Agricultural Range, the new Mini Agri 20.4: we pulled out

all the stops to develop a prototype ready to showcase at the fair, and it generated great expectation and cu-riosity ever since the first details were posted on our Facebook page. Given the level of interest and the number of orders we received, we can safely say that our efforts were largely rewarded. In fact, in order to meet demand we

will begin series production as early as June 2019. If the success of a trade show is judged solely on the number of visitors it attracts, then Eima far sur-passed the other events we partici-pated in during 2018. Another sign of the show’s success was the presence of numerous Italian operators as well as European and Eastern European

companies, confirming the sector’s encouraging growth, especially in the technologically innovative sector of farms and agricultural equipment, which has so far been unaffected by economic downturns. Companies are clearly investing, and it certainly is a fa-vourable time to do so. This prompts us to believe that Dieci will itself post

distinctly positive results for the end of 2018. The high targets we have at-tained were not achieved by fluke but through tireless commitment: our tur-nover has reached 150 million euros, an increase of 50% in just two years, and our workforce has grown to 450 employees. The Kaizen Project has

now been extended to all production lines and new projects are under way. They include the renewal of our Agri-cultural Range, accompanied by the renovation of the Construction Range, the first results of which will probably be seen by April at the Bauma trade show, among others. Many other new

ideas have also left the drawing board and entered development, underlining the focus on continuous improvement that has brought us this far. If you want to discover them, follow us at Bauma, as well as at Sima, Agritechnica and all the other events we are scheduled to attend in 2019 and beyond.

Dazzling sun reflecting off the snow, the faces of the Jungfrau and Eiger mountains that seem to blend into a cobalt blue sky, which is criss-crossed by vapour trails from jets of the Pa-trouille de Suisse aerobatic team, as they swoop and swirl above a multi-coloured audience watching from the stands and along the edges of the Lauberhorn piste. It is an evocative scene, especially for skiing enthu-siasts, and a spectacle that has been repeated every year since 1930 in

Wengen, Switzerland, on the opening day of the Lauberhornrennen, one of the most prestigious alpine races of the World Ski Championships.Apart from the summer period, when Wengen resembles the many tourist resorts that pepper the Alps, prepara-tions for holding races on the slopes of the Lauberhorn continue all year round: organising such an event re-quires a lot of time, patience and ef-fort, because everything must be re-ady, tested and fully functional during

the three-day races (which in 2019 will take place from 18 to 20 January).Welcoming thousands of people to a village of 1200 inhabitants that is clo-sed to vehicular traffic and reachable only by helicopter or the Wenger-nalpbahn (an impressive cog railway) is certainly an administrative hea-dache, even for Switzerland’s most exacting and experienced mayors. So we can only imagine the amount of preparation that goes into the races: distributing artificial snow, levelling

and beating of the pistes, installing fences and security systems, lay-ing kilometres of cables and control units for communications, arranging press rooms, offices, vehicles and rescue points, work teams, warehou-ses, catering outlets, public support, grandstands and so on. Of course, this “White Circus” relies on profes-sionals who keep it running smoothly, but they only deal with the travelling side of the organisation, whereas the slopes are the responsibility of the lo-

cals. Some 500 volunteers have been working to prepare the event in Wen-gen since September, but certain jobs require experienced professionals. They include the construction of the VIP grandstand, which this year has been entrusted to the Nüssli Group, a company specialising in the crea-tion of temporary structures for major international events, such as the Mi-lan Expo, the F1 Mexican Grand Prix, the Super-G in St Moritz and many others. Last September, a team of

22 Nüssli staff began building the VIP grandstand, an impressive structure weighing 150 tonnes and measuring 22 metres high, 70 metres long and 23 metres wide that is capable of se-ating 570 people. The grandstand is located next to the piste, right alongsi-de the station where the cogwheel train arrives. This position made the assemblers’ job doubly difficult, also bearing in mind the sloping terrain, limited space, wildly fluctuating tem-perature range, seasonal changes,

high construction requirements and tight deadline. Arbor AG, DIECI dea-ler for Switzerland, came to the Nüssli team’s aid by supplying a Pegasus 40.25, which helped to ensure that the grandstand was assembled on schedule. The large incline was no problem for the Pegasus, which is equipped with an excellent self-levelling system, adaptive loading software and an anti-crash system, which eliminate all risks caused by the tricky ground condi-

tions. The large size of the structure and the limited available space also posed no problems for the vehicle. With its maximum lifting height of 24 metres and 360° continuous rotation, our Pegasus could reach every point of the structure as it took shape, pre-cisely and delicately depositing loads up to 4000 kg wherever they were needed. Not even the unpredictable weather and fluctuating temperatures presen-ted a challenge, at least from a tech-

nical point of view: the 105 kW FTP engine responded well, starting rea-dily even in the sub-zero climate, and the LOAD SENSING hydraulic system was equally reliable. When it came to comfort, however, the Pegasus couldn’t please everyone, at least not all at once!Unfortunately ONLY ONE operator at a time could escape the cold alpine wind by retreating into the spacious, comfortable cabin and enjoying the excellent air conditioning system...

North of Santiago, in northern cen-tral Chile, there is a region with two distinctive traits that make it unique in the world. Its administrative name is IV Región, but its inhabitants prefer to call it Región de Coquimbo, after the port city whose name (in the Quechua language) means “place of calm wa-ter”: Coquimbo was once a stopping place for conquistadors such as Pe-dro de Valdivia, as well as pirates and

corsairs including Sir Francis Drake and Bartolomeo Sharp.Due to its very sparse rainfall, this area of Chile enjoys some of the clearest skies in the world, along with the ne-arby region of Atacama. It averages 300 days a year without cloud cover, with only 96 mm of rainfall per year. The sky is so clear and the visibility conditions so exceptional that a third of the world’s optical telescopes are

concentrated in this area, which has recently become a favourite destina-tion for amateur astronomers from around the globe. The region also has another peculiar characteristic: a micro-climate that is particularly suited to farming, thanks to the combination of the nearby Pacific Ocean, the An-des mountain range, the arid Atacama region to the north and the presence of the Rio Colorado river, which is fed

by nutrient-rich torrents descending from the Cordillera. The contrasting landscape of the Coquimbo Region is like something out of a science fiction film: here you can see arid and barren hilltops surrounded by valleys covered with lush orchards, fine vineyards (that produce Pisco, a mild-tasting brandy that was favoured by actors such as Orson Welles and John Wayne), and profuse vegetable crops (including let-tuce, tomatoes, cauliflower, potatoes and celery) that supply markets all over the country. It is a precious, unique and fragile ecosystem, whose water requi-rements are met by an ancient network

of canals and safeguarded by eight modern reservoirs (with a capacity of 1300 million cubic metres of water), which were built after climate change triggered several years of persistent drought that almost wiped out local avocado production. Despite this pres-sure on water resources, Chile remains the world’s largest producer of table

grapes, the second-largest producer of kiwifruit and avocados, and—thanks to its counterseasonal production pe-riod compared with northern hemi-sphere countries—is one of the largest exporters of fresh fruit and vegetables for the European and North Ameri-can winter markets. And while ama-teur astronomers observe the orbits of Mars and Jupiter from the slopes of the Chilean Cordillera, those who

look down over an area of 200 hec-tares near Coquimbo can observe the orbits of another Apollo as it collects celery, a key ingredient in Chilean cu-isine. Celery needs to be eaten fresh, so prompt harvesting and shipment are essential. Our Apollo (sold in Chile by Dieci dealer Salinas y Fabres) has a special attachment, mounted at the

celery is harvested, Apollo turns its attention to crops of cabbages, follo-wed by potatoes, carrots and all the other typical produce that make the Coquimbo Region a fresh food para-dise. To round off this article, here is an interesting fact: among the coun-tless specialities of Chilean cuisine there is Cazuela Levanta Muertos, a

soup mainly consisting of celery and potatoes, in addition to pepper, maize and chicken. It has a strong flavour, supposedly due to its soothing properties for those who have consumed a few too many glasses of Pisco. Hopefully John Wayne and Orson Welles knew about it too!

If you have ever travelled in the nor-theast of the United Kingdom, you may have seen huge expanses of well-tended grassland, like an English lawn but spanning numerous acres! For us natives of Emilia (where meadows are an inseparable part of the processing cycle for Grana cheese), it inevitably begs the question as to why this ara-ble land is apparently left to waste. Does it belong to the estate of some

noble landowner? Is it grazing for fine wool sheep? A huge golf course? No, none of the above, actually the mea-dows are solely for growing... grass! Most likely they belong to one of the area’s many turf farms, which are de-dicated to growing different varieties of transplantable grass. Turf farms are particularly widespread in northe-ast England and in Scotland, due to the abundant rainfall and the sandy,

peat-rich soil, which greatly facilitates cultivation and harvesting. This parti-cular type of crop is widespread not only in the UK, but also in the United States, generating a considerable sa-les turnover: turf is used not only for private gardens, but also large sports facilities (such as Wimbledon, to name one well-known institution) and even airports like that of Amman, in Jordan, which signed a million-pound contract

to cover the spaces surrounding its runways in grass.Turf is planted simply by laying it on the desired site and adding fertiliser and water. The seedlings then grow and take root, seamlessly fusing the gre-en mats together into a grassy carpet. The local turf-growing industry owes much of its success to the inspiration and ingenuity of a young Scottish man

called Leslie Dawson who, while upro-oting some overgrown cabbages in his vegetable garden, noticed that the tan-gled mess of roots and soil formed a kind of living mat.He decided to apply this approach to make garden turf and subsequently founded his own company in 1975, which in the space of 40 years has be-come a leader in the UK market. Turf

cultivation (which differs depending on the variety of grass grown) is regu-lated by precise standards set by the Turfgrass Growers Association. The soil is carefully levelled, com-pressed with rollers and sprayed with special fertilisers, before its pH level is measured and finally the desired grass varieties are sown. Constant irrigation and periodic cutting is very important

for the healthy development of the seedlings. The cuttings are left on the ground to be absorbed, acting as a kind of fertiliser and natural binder of the growth substrate. When the grassy portion of the turf is between 12 and 15 mm thick, it is ready for harvesting. This is done by special machines that dig up the turf (soil and root system included), roll it up and cut it into standard sizes: a

single roll measures 60x167 cm (equi-valent to 1 m2) and weighs around 20 kg (depending on its water content). As the machine advances, the operators follow behind it, transferring the rolls onto pallets ready for delivery. To pre-serve the freshness of the turf, it needs to be shipped within 26 hours of har-vesting. Generally, however, it is loaded immediately onto the buyers’ trucks,

which generally arrive right at the start of the harvest. Speed is therefore a key factor, which is where our vehicles come in. We find ourselves in West Row, Norfolk, where the spring harvest is under way on a vast turf farm.An Agri Max and an Agri Plus are shut-tling between the turf buyers’ trucks, which are waiting on the edge of the field, and the collection points, whe-

re employees have filled the various pallets with freshly cut turf. Some pallets containing noticeably large, non-standard-sized rolls are probably destined for a specialised use, such as a football or rugby field. For this particular task, the Agri Max is equipped with a double fork that makes it easy to lift, tran-sport and load oversized pallets. The two machi-nes zoom along the open ground between the collection points and the lorries, leaving almost no tracks despite their considerable weight, a clear sign that the soil was compressed before sowing.

The harvest continues throughout the day and the two Agri vehicles continue shuttling back and forth while more buyers’ trucks arrive and depart one after the other.Even after the special oversized turf has all gone, the Agri Max retains its double fork so that it can load two pallets at a time! The job must be finished by evening, because the following day after the harvest is over, the machi-nes used to prepare the ground for sowing will already be in action. It would have made a lovely golf course though...
