Welcome to EiköEikö is a martial arts event that had it’s first show in Newcastle on 25/03/2012. We aim to bring the best combative sports to the octagon, focusing on the pure intensity, high action and skill of the martial arts on show. We refuse to adopt any negative language or promotion associated with MMA, K1 or Kickboxing we feel holds the sport’s image back in this country.

We hope to improve the public’s awareness of MMA in the region as we believe the North East has a fantastic pool of clubs and fighters worth promoting for their skills and abilities. With that in mind, Eikö will become a platform for existing clubs participating in our events to promote themselves as well as their martial artists.

We will always try to pit top local fighters against each other as well as attract fighters from across the UK and Europe to headline our shows. This will give local fighters the best chance to springboard themselves onto bigger and better fights whether it be with Eikö or elsewhere eventually.

Eikö2 was July 22nd and in only a week it will be Eikö3 on November 4th, lets take a look back at how it went down last time Eikö opened its doors.

Sponsors of

Eikö sponsors Functional Strength Institute (FSI) have just celebrated their first year of opening. We spoke to FSI owner and managing director Michael Warren about the first year of FSI gym and Strength and conditioning training for MMA. “This past year has come with some challenges but mixed in with some real successes. FSI was a two year planning project prior to opening, the philosophy of FSI was to create a training environment that was all focused about results, and a facility that was available to everyone from professional athletes to members of the general public. To mark the one year opening we decided to progress the FSI facility and add additional racks, benches, and equipment to further develop the facility. It’s now comparable to not only other strength and conditioning facilities in the UK but across the world.” Eikö asked Michael Warren, who writes for MMA Uncaged magazine, about Strength & Conditioning Training in MMA.

“All athletes in any sport can benefit from being stronger and more conditioned. Regardless of the sport, a stronger, more conditioned athlete is going to become a more dangerous opponent. MMA athletes can potentially benefit more than any other sport to strength and conditioning training if done correctly. Where in often lies the problem. Many MMA fighters will start resistance training in an attempt to get stronger and train similar to a body builder with no idea of how to correctly develop strength for combat sport. Correct MMA strength training can develop strength aswell as both explosive and dynamic power.

For conditioning training with fighters I train all the different energy systems to ensure maximum power output and aerobic endurance so that all aspects are covered for the requirements during the fight. This ensures that the fighter is able to dictate the pace of the fight, and when absolute maximum power output is required it is sustained for those few potentially valuable seconds longer to achieve victory.”

“Andy’s resting heart rate was around 36 beats per minute 1-2 weeks before the fight. His level of conditioning is superb, and was evident against Corassani, not only did he clearly dominate the 3rd round of the fight, but in the third round while he was going for a takedown got caught by Corassani’s knee on the way down, only a few seconds later he was back in for a successful takedown.

Yes Andy is a brave and strong fighter but his conditioning levels mean he can potentially recover much faster from a blow than a less conditioned athlete.”

2013 looks to be a busy and exciting year for FSI with the launch of its franchise opportunities, internship placements, as well as the addition of new professional athletes and teams to FSI. Just recently Durham County Cricket Club confirmed FSI as a training facility for their team.

“It’s great for members to be intermixed with professional athletes, it was something I always wanted to happen at FSI, it creates a real team atmosphere, and I know that it helps our members to work that bit harder and achieve their own fitness goals.”For more from FSI - check out their site:www.fsi-gym.co.uk

Official Results

Fight1:AmateurMMA84kgDave Askew vs David Wilson

The first fight saw Dave Askew take on David Wilson from PMA at 84kg. The first round saw Dave Askew launch a fast aggressive assault, quickly taking his opponent to the floor, tak-ing top mount and making his opponent suffer. However, the 1st and halve of the second round would see Wilson show great determination and resilience in defending against such attacks and hanging in there. Wilson started to show more fight later in the second, having escaped numerous submission attempts and defended from body shots for most of the rest of the fight. As the final round started, Wilson looked fresh and Askew looked very tired. Askew would spend all of this round on the receiv-ing end of body and leg shots, mostly while he was flat out on his back. Wilson avoided a ground battle but was relentless in his striking right until the bell. This was enough for the judges to decide that he was the victor via split decision.

Winner:David WilsonDecision:Split Decision

Fight2:Amateur77kgJamie Hails Vs Bobby Scott

The second match up saw Jamie Hails take on Bobby Scott from Felling Warriors. Bobby Scott controlled the fight for the majority of the first round, with good striking and grappling combinations, completing takedowns and transitioning to side control. Jamie did well to defend and keep himself in the fight, seeing it through to the bell of the first. Unfortunately as both men came together in the second, Jamie threw an uncontrolled illegal shot to the head, which landed just above Bobb’ys eye, cutting him. The blood from the cut could not be controlled, and as it was inevitably running straight into the Bobby’s eye the referee made the call to give the win to Bobby via DQ.

Winner:Bobby Scott Via: Disqualification from illegal blow Time: 1st round

Fight3:AmateurMMA74kgBen Richardson vs Jed RamshawThird up, Ben Richardson from PMA took on Jed Ramshaw from Viper MMA in the 74kg division. The fight started off very fast with both men landing kicks and knees to the body, before Jed took the initiative with a good takedown. After Ben fought his way back to his feet, it was not long before Jed took him down again, this time getting straight to Side control and

quickly using his ground and pound, landing some huge knees to the body. One of these knees was absorbed by Ben’s left arm and shortly after, the referee stopped the fight from a verbal submission by Ben. Ben was seen by paramedics and had a suspected fracture in his left arm.

Winner:Jed RamshawMethod: Verbal Submission (Via Ground and Pound) Round: 1st

Fight4:CClassK1MMA74kg|Helena Salcedo vs Robin Molloy

Page 11: Eiko2 Magazine

Next up was a C-class K1 bout between Helena Salcedo and Robin Molloy from Club Pheonix at 68kg. This fight had everyone on the edge of their seat with both girls battling it out in a hard fought match. In the first round both ladies landed heavy shots at a high rate of action. As the rounds went on, Robin found her range and managed to land significantly more strikes than her opponent. In Helena’s frustration it seemed she was going more the heavy shots in the last round, perhaps knowing she was down on points and hoping for a KO. As it finished Robin took the win via unanimous decision.

Winner: Robin MolloyVia: Unanimous Decision

Stephen Holmes from Viper MMA took on Sean Coughlan at 77kg. Both fighters were in great condition for this fight, and it looked to be an exciting spectacle. As it unfolded, Sean Coughlan rushed Stephen looking for the double leg take down. In doing so, he allowed Sean to get a grip around his head, looking for a guillotine. Even though it looked like Stephen had the submission locked on straight away, Sean not only managed to pass Stephan’s guard, but also work round to side and back to his feet. However, Stephen never let go and just when it looked like Sean would escape Stephen managed to regather his grip, and as the two went back to the floor, he tightened the technique, this time keeping Sean in his guard. Sean could not escape this time and was forced to tap via the Guillotine choke.

Second Semi-Pro bout saw John Baldwin take on Galip Koch from The Fish Tank at 77kg. This fight was a good mix of styles. Galip, although trowing and landing some good strikes, clearly preferring the fight to be on the ground. After initial trading of blows, Galip took the fight to the floor with, moving very quickly to look for a submission, going initially for what looked like and inescapable knee bar, as John was up against the cage. However, John did brilliantly to escape, taking a north south position against Galip as he turtled up. Galip drove forward, getting to his feet, as John attempted a guillotine. Galip was aware, quickly escaped and shortly after moved straight for a belly down armbar. John again managed to escape, finish-ing the round on his feet delivering some heavy kicks to his

grounded opponents legs. The second round got underway, again the two came together landing strikes, but after the initial flurry, john was landing cleaner, as he had Galip on the back foot he threw a big spinning back fist which had Galip reel-ing, John perhaps unwisely followed Galip as he went down to the ground, attempting to deliver some ground and pound to the body. Galiip, still had his wits about him and managed to secure an armbar, putting John on his back and preventing him from rolling out, John was forced to tap. Galip picking up the win via Armbar submission.

The last Semi Pro bout saw two heavyweights go head to head. Matty Dixon from Combat Sports Newcastle against Tony Mustard from The Fish Tank. These two men went at it from the off, with Matty Dixon looking to take it to the ground early on, Matty rushed his opponent, closing the distance and pinning Tony up against the cage. He then looked for a double leg takedown, but this was to no avail as Tony’s defence was good enough to keep the smaller of the two on his feet. During this tussle, Mustard landed a big knee to the head of Dixon, leaving the huge heavyweight dazed. Mustard seeing this proceeded to launch an attack of a barrage of strikes most of them finding their mark on Dixon. As Dixon looked to get out of trouble he poorly shot for Mustard, who sprawled and maintained a headlock position on Dixon. Seeing this was giving Dixon some rest time, Mustard wisely stood back up, forcing his opponent to his feet. The next set of strikes from Mustard would put Dixon flat out on his back and the fight was over. Mustard Winning via TKO

Professional MMA

Due to numerous last minute dropouts, the only Pro MMA fight saw Darren Straughan from The Fight Factory against John Burton from Burton MMA in the 70kg division. The fight saw Darren Straughan put in a text book performance, making light work of his op-ponent. After a very brief initial exchange, Darren would secure a clean takedown after locking his opponent in a Thai Clinch. Darren, taking time to secure a tight side control then repositioned to allow him to land repeated short elbows to the head from the side. These landed and although Burton struggled to escape, he failed in his attempts and after taking repeated shots verbally submitted to the ground and pound. Darren Straughan winning via Verbal Submission from GnP.

Co-Main EventProK1| u75kg Danijel Solaja Vs

Next was the first of our two main events. Eikö2 featured 2 international Professional K1 fights. The first, a non title fight, featuring local fighter Peter Irving, now from Semtex Gym in London, was up against the German Danijel Solaja from Sportschule Asia in an under 75kg match up. The fight started with the crowd on their feet, 500+ people there to watch Peter in his home coming bout. Danijel, a youngster in comparison to Pete, however his record coming in to the fight spoke for itself, 24-6-2 across K1 and Thai Boxing matches. As you may have also known if you had been following the build up to this fight on www.eiko.co.uk, Danijel was not affected by the crowd, having fought in front of a huge crowd in Korea where he took on and defeated multiple Korean opponents in Thai boxing tournament. The scene was set and the crowd was primed for the action.

Pete started well getting on the front foot early, firing both kicks and punches at the young German. However, the first round saw both men landing shots and moving well around the octagon. Pete looked the physically stronger of the two fight-ers, especially in the clinch exchanges, but Danijel landed some telling strikes in the first, clean and powerful showing he was a constant threat and not letting Pete get it all his own way.

Page 23: Eiko2 Magazine

The second round started much as the first, only Danijel seemed to be on the back foot almost instantly. Pete dictated the pace and was this time landing visibly more cleaner shots. Danijel was still fighting, but using his kicks almost always in a defensive manner and not throwing too many big shots. Irving’s striking started in increase in ferocity, landing noticeably heavier kicks and as Danijel defended, Irving simply increased their frequency. After a barrage of strikes and a double head kick which although Danijel did his best to block with his glove, seemed to be physically moving the young German backwards, Danijel turned away from his opponent signalling that he was quitting and no longer in the fight

However, it would become apparent that Danijel would have an injury of a suspected broken thumb. Still, Pete was a deserving winner. He did look to be the stronger of the two fighters and at times overwhelmed the experienced young gun. From the reaction of the crowd it would be safe to say that this was still an exciting bout enjoyed by all who attended. Both men put on a great show and we look forward to seeing both men back at Eikö soon.

Finally it was the main event. Craig Jose from The Faktory Vs Jamal Wahib from Team RM Tiger for the WKF K1 international Super welterweight (69.5kg) Title. Going into the fight both fighters matched up very well on paper. Both fighters like to punch, both renowned for heavy hitting power strikes and good old fashioned toughness. This matched with the professionalism and high level of experienced set everything up for a great fight.

Page 32: Eiko2 Magazine

Page 34: Eiko2 Magazine

The crowd were now ecstatic, the atmosphere electric and both fighters looked ready and raring to go. The fight would last for 4 of the scheduled 5 rounds. Both fighters loving to trade blows. Craig often being successful counter punching Jamal’s forward pressing style. Jamal catching many of Craig’s kicks, and utilis-ing returning big shots and sweeps of his own. This continued in a fashion that kept everyone on the edge of their seat as in all rounds there were moments were each fighter would land clean, only for the other to return with a shot of similar intensity. Also both fighters showing much respect for one another as the surface they were fighting on became a little slippy, both would loose footing at one stage in the third round, only for their op-ponent to respectfully allow them to regain their stance so both men could continue this battle.

Page 35: Eiko2 Magazine
Page 36: Eiko2 Magazine

Entering the third round, it was Jamal who looked like he had suffered the most from the exchanges with a large welt under his right eye from wear Craig’s Counter left had been land-ing against Jamal’s big right hand. And in the fourth, it was this exact exchange that would be the end of the fight, Jamal going for a big right hand, Jose dodging and returning with a perfectly place left hook, landing clean and flush on Jamal’s Jaw, Jamal’s legs collapsing below him. Although Jamal was back on his feet by the 8 count, when asked to step forward by the referee he stepped slightly backwards and to the side, with the referee not happy he was ok to continue he called a stop to fight. Criag Jose celebrated with the crown ex-tactic, he was crowned the new WKF International K1 Champion.
