EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 4, 2013 The Lord hands down the sternest warning to those who would store up treasure for themselves but who “are not rich in what matters to God.” What does matter to God? Qoheleth readily recognizes the vanity of laboring, toiling, and acquiring. Sorrow, grief, and restlessness persist, nonetheless, in plaguing such a person. What matters to God is that, through baptism, we have died and our life is hidden with Christ in God. Life’s richness consists in seeking the One who is above and claiming the new self offered to us through him. Christ is all. Our treasure lies in claiming Christ our life who has appeared. Our divine Redeemer, being in Galilee about a year before His sacred Passion, took with him St. Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, Sts. James and John, and led them to a retired mountain. Tradition assures us that this was Mount Thabor, which is exceedingly high and beautiful, and was anciently covered with green trees and shrubs, and was very fruitful. It rises something like a sugar-loaf, in a vast plain in the middle of Galilee. This was the place in which the Man-God appeared in His glory. // Whilst Jesus prayed, he suffered that glory which was always due to his sacred humility, and of which, for our sake, He deprived it, to diffuse a ray over His whole body. His face was altered and shone as the sun, and his garments became white as snow. Moses and Elias were seen by the three apostles in his company on this occasion, and were heard discoursing with him of the death which he was to suffer in Jerusalem. // The three apostles were wonderfully delighted with this glorious vision, and St. Peter cried out to Christ, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tents: one for thee, one for Moses, and one for Elias" Whilst St. Peter was speaking, there came, on a sudden, a bright shining cloud from heaven, an emblem of the presence of God's majesty, and from out of this cloud was heard a voice which said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him" The apostles that were present, upon hearing this voice, were seized with a sudden fear, and fell upon the ground; but Jesus, going to them, touched them, and bade them to rise. They immediately did so, and saw no one but Jesus standing in his ordinary state. // This vision happened in the night. As they went down the mountain early the next morning, Jesus bade them not to tell any one what they had seen till he should be risen from the dead. ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------ our goal. It’s been estimated that in the last 100 years 300,000 lives have been lost, and in the next twenty years an estimated 150,000 will die, due to its effects. Shocking? Yes! That many babies die every 4 months due to surgical abortion. That’s every 4 months, not 100 years. Now that is shocking! STEWARDSHIP : “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Luke 12:15. The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle. (4) FESTIVAL KITCHEN: The kitchen is the heart of our Summer Festival. We really need your help in the preparations the week before the Festival, and on the actual day of the Festival. Give us a hand! (5) BOOSTER TICKETS: Each Parish adult received one Ticket ($5.00 each) redeemable at the grounds for food purchases the day of the picnic. Please purchase yours! (6) RAFFLE TICKETS: Each Parish adult has received ten Chances ($1.00 each). Prizes are: 1st-$1,000 Cash; 2nd through 5th -$100 Cash. Please purchase or sell yours! This will ensure our Summer Festival’s success! (7) KITCHEN COLLECTION DONATION: Use the special envelope that was sent to you to help with pre-picnic expenses.Write your Name / Amount on it. (8) CHILDREN’S GAMES: We need young volunteersfrom the age of 10 and up to help run the games. We will be glad to verify Community Service for this activity, or any other picnic activity, if needed. Call Amy (544-9595) or Rachel (544-9747) and someone will get in touch with you to explain the program in more detail. (9) THEME BASKETS: Donations of all types of baskets are needed. You can leave your basket in the back of the Church near the sign-up board or if you want them to pick up the baskets at your home or are need of a basket, call Michelle DiRenzo (544-2518) or Arlene Quesada (385-0248).
(10) FESTIVAL POSTERS: We need volunteers to place them in local businesses and other suitable places. See Father Leo after Mass.
