The book was first published in 1898 C.E. The whole book is set out in 32 chapters and an appendix all of which spans 628 pages. The author was born in 1849 and died in 1928. He ‘was an Indian Muslim jurist... He was a prominent political leader, and author of a number of influential books on Muslim history and the modern development of Islam, who is credited for his contributions to the Law of India, particularly Muslim Personal Law, as well as the development of political philosophy for Muslims, during the British Raj. He was a signatory to the 1906 Quran Petition and founding-member of the All India Muslim League.’ (Wikipedia [1-Feb-2014]) The Preface to the 1927 Edition concludes with this paragraph: “This work is not a mere chronicle of wars and conquests, or the rise and fall of dynasties. It is a record of the copious contributions made by the Saracenic race under the flag of Islam, to human knowledge in all departments of science and literature; of their marvellous system of administration; of their economic and cultural development and the remarkable position held by women in the social and legal system of Islam. The story of the havoc, carnage and savagery wrought by the Crusaders and the Mongols is told from the records of the people who suffered.” And it is for remembering the ‘havoc, carnage and savagery’ of the Crusaders from Europe and of the Muslim sufferers that the following 8 pages have been scanned and reproduced, starting from the 2 nd paragraph of page 322 in chapter 20 till the end of the chapter on page 330.
