A. Read the following passage carefully.

Games keep our body alert, active, youthful and energetic. They instill a spirit of adventure in us. They increase the circulation of blood, boost metabolism, burn calories and improve the respiration and digestive system. They also keep us away from diseases related to heart, obesity, mental stress and sleeplessness. They instill in the player a spirit of self-confidence, self-reliance, discipline, justice, fair play and patriotism.

Games and sports keep one physically and mentally fit. As the maxim goes 'Health is wealth'. According to the World Health Organization, 'Health is

Page 5: EICHER SCHOOL FARIDABAD SESSION 2020-2021 ......English HHW / Class VIII / Page 2 of 6 Home fitness has been in our lives for decades and it has taken on a new role since the Covid-19

a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not only the absence of disease.'

Games are very essential for students. They generate a feeling of sportsmanship and broaden one's outlook. Some schools dedicate timing for games only once a week. Many schools do not employ any physical instructor to guide the children in various games. Even parents want their children to complete their home assignments after school hours rather than play games. Many school children become obese due to lack of participation in games.

Effective measures should be taken to ensure people's active participation in games. The government should evolve a long-term national sports policy. Children should be informed about the advantages of games. They should be made to play games regularly. Training facilities for various games should be introduced. Participation in sports and games will improve the overall health of the nation and its citizens.

Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate options from the ones given below:

i. Games and sports

(a) are essential for the proper development of the society. (b) are necessary only in schools. (c) keep one physically and mentally healthy. (d) are given least importance at home. ii. When games and sports are neglected at school age, it leads to

(a) obesity and other heart diseases in the child. (b) poor academic performance of the child. (c) mental disorder in the child. (d) bad name to the school.

iii. The status of games and sports in schools can be enhanced by

(a) ensuring people's active participation in games

(b) evolving a long-term national sports policy. (c) introducing training facilities for various games (d) all of the above

iv. Games and sports are essential as they help to generate

(a) recreation and enjoyment. (b) a feeling of sportsmanship (c) unhealthy soul and mind. (d) none of the above. v. ‘Maxim’ means

(a) maximum. (b) proverb. (c) belief. (d) creation.

B. Read the following passage carefully. Just by the use of colours, you can balance your diet. All you need to do is to pay a little attention to the food you eat. Nutrition experts strongly recommend adding colours to your diet. Sweets and candy bars are generally colourful but remember they do not contain natural colours and hence are not healthy. The key is a variety of naturally coloured foods. The deeper the colour, the greater the benefits. Getting more colours in your diet does not mean you have to drastically change your current eating habits. Have a glass of fresh fruit juice in the morning. Keep a mix of dried fruits on hand for a quick snack. Grab an apple or banana on your way out. Include at least two vegetables in your dinner. Get into the habit of starting your dinner with a salad. Eat fruit for dessert. Always add greens to sandwiches.

Most red fruits and vegetables contain an antioxidant, which offers protection against ultraviolet rays and cancer, and helps to prevent urinary tract infections and diseases related to the circulatory system. Green vegetables not only look great but also

possess excellent antioxidant properties that protect your eyes by keeping the retina in good condition and reduce the risk of cancerous tumours. Orange and yellow group fruits contain beta-carotene, an antioxidant that improves cell communication and thereby helps to stop the spread of cancer. Blue and the purple group not only adds richness to your plate but also has an influence on the pineal gland (the third eye) and the nervous system. The white group contains sulphur compounds that protect DNA and also contain flavonoids, the antioxidants that protect cell membranes. Therefore, the more colourful the diet is (all natural colours, of course), the better equipped your immune system is to cope with diseases. I. Complete the sentences with suitable words/phrases. (a) One can balance one’s diet by _______________________________. (b) _______________________do not contain natural colours and are unhealthy. (c) The blue and purple group influence the ________________ and ______________________. (d) The word from the passage which means the same as ‘severely’ (Para 1) is ______________________. II. Based on your reading of the above passage, complete the table.

1. Based on the COVID-19 global pandemic, make a Bar graph representing the number of active CORONA VIRUS patients of any five states of India as per the data on 31th May, 2020.

2. Make a Bar graph representing the number of patients recovered in 5 different districts of HARYANA in April 2020 & May 2020. (Students would make two bar graphs, one for each month.)

3.Exponen(al growth

You may not have noticed it, but there’s a good chance you’ve already studied mathematical modelling yourself. If you have heard that the number of infections with COVID-19 doubles every three days, then you can easily work out that, if today we have cases and this trend continues, then we will have

cases in 3 days , cases in 6 days, cases in 9 days………

In how many days will the number of cases be a little more than 500 times the initial number of cases.

4.Social Distancing

Taking drastic measures to limit the transmission rate of Covid-19, like closing schools, cancelling public events, and sending people home from work, may seem like an overreaction when few people in a city or state are infected. However, early in the outbreak is exactly when such measures are most effective. A model created showing the difference even one day of social distancing can make in reducing the burden of cases. Vox has recreated the chart shown below (note that this is based on a theoretical model and not actual reported figures).

An extra day of social distancing can greatly reduce the spread of Virus.

SCIENCE HOLIDAY HOMEWORK, VIII

TASK-I

Let’s do something very interesting in these summer vacations. Let’s learn some

‘DIY gardening hacks’

You will be amazed by how much fun gardening can be, and the pride you take in sharing healthy food nurtured by your own efforts. Growing your own food has many health benefits.

Food in its rawest, freshest form is not only the tastiest way to enjoy it, but also the most nutritional. Growing vegetables in containers is one of the easiest ways to create a city vegetable garden. You can do it outdoors, in your balcony or even on your terrace. Let’s include gardening in our lifestyle and enjoy the harvest.

• Watch the following links to get an idea of gardening hacks:

TASK-II

As plas_c is composed of major toxic pollutants, it has the poten_al to cause great harm to the air, water and land. The problem with plas_c is that most of it isn't biodegradable. It doesn't rot, like paper or food, so instead it can hang around in the environment for hundreds of years. Each year, 400 million tonnes of plas_c is produced and 40% of that is single-use - plas_c we'll only use once before it's binned.

But what can you do about the plas_c that is already in your life, or the items you are unable to switch for alterna_ves?

What if there was a simple way to begin your journey to a non-recyclable waste-free life and turn your waste into green construc_on material and keep it out of our ocean and landfills?

So here is that simple way: 'DIY EcoBrick'

How to make an EcoBrick: The first step in eliminaCng non-recyclable waste at home.

1. Collect your clean and dry household waste. We recommend only waste that you cannot recycle (like plas_c wrappers, packets etc).

2. Twist your waste and insert it into a plas_c bo"le. Compress it as _ghtly as you can with a s_ck.

3. Keep doing this - make sure your bo"le is unsquishable.

4. Think your EcoBrick is done? If you can squeeze it by more than 10% with one hand you should add more waste.

5. No longer squishable? It's done!

• To get a visual idea, watch the links shared below:

h"ps://youtu.be/MQYsXxHKgMk

h"ps://youtu.be/NBqV68kLMMU

Making EcoBricks is not about encouraging the produc_on of plas_c, but rather a temporary means of protec_ng the environment while we humans figure out a way to cut plas_c out of our lives altogether, and while you figure out how to cut these items out of your own life.

• Make 2/3 such bo"les and bring to the school when the school reopens.

• These bo"les will be used to design tables, racks, stools and various other ar_cles by the students.

• As you have to submit your holiday home work on e-mode, so make a ppt (3-5 slides) and Include following points in your ppt:
