    Environmental Inventory Summary: Juan

When choosing environments for Juan, I wanted to keep two things in mind: functional

skills and social skills. I wanted to find environments where Juan would have opportunities to

interact with his peers, but I also wanted Juan to be able to work on reading in functional

contexts. Juan could work on functional reading in the special education classroom, and then he

could generalize those skills into use in places like a fast-food restaurant. The environments of

the cafeteria and the generalization classroom provide opportunities for Juan to work on

    interacting and socializing with peers.

I felt all of the environments I chose were appropriate to at least some extent. The special

education classroom is perhaps the best learning environment for Juan because of the isolated

setting that would allow him to focus and receive the most concentrated instruction. The general

education classrooms scripted phonics curriculum scared me; with over 50 students in one

room, I worry that Juan might not be able to handle the behavioral expectations. However, the

minute I saw the general education classroom teachers lesson on the Oregon Trail, I knew Juan

would thrive in that environment. He could definitely use his love of science and social studies to

work on peer interactions. The cafeteria serves the same purpose, but because of how crowded

and busy it is, it might be a difficult instructional setting. Even if I have to modify the setting, I

think its definitely worthwhile, because the cafeteria is a place of socialization up to and beyond

high school. On a similar note, a fast food restaurant would provide these social opportunities,

but it also requires so many functional skills. Juan would need to ask for help in order to place

his order, he would need to use the menu to determine his choices, he would need to make a

choice about what he wants (something hes been working on through PCP), and he would also

need to use money to pay for his food.

My big areas of focus of each environment are going to be drastically different. In the

special education classroom, Im going to work with Juan on a lot of functional reading

comprehension. Hell need to learn to generalize by going to a bunch of different other

environments, but a lot of the initial instruction can take place 1:1 in a quiet classroom. Im

really excited to work with Juan in his general education classroom. I think he could easily use

modified curriculum to keep up with his classmates in science and social studies while also

working on purposeful peer interactions. Even though I would have to modify a lot of the

materials myself, I think it would be worth it to have Juan working at grade level.

Any instruction Juan has in the cafeteria will be on social behavior. This is such a natural

time for this to occur and the environment is so constant; it would be perfect. My only concern is

how distracting the environment would be, but I think that if I worked with Juan mostly during

breakfast and only worked on generalizing during lunch, it could be done. At the fast food

restaurant, I will start with the hard part: placing an order at the counter. This is the most

important because it is the most consistent across environments. Juan will have to learn to apply

his functional reading skills and money skills in order to place his order.

In order to be VERY clear, Im putting the IEP goals on the next page. Yes, this part is a little

long, but I got SUPER excited. Bear with me.

    Special Education classroom:

When presented with Dolce level 2 and 3 sight word cards during 1:1 instruction, Juan

will orally identify 95% of sight words within 3 seconds during 5 consecutive trials.

    General Education classroom:

After listening to an audio copy of a section from the class history textbook and while

using the written version for reference, Juan will write definitions for all of the section

vocabulary words with 90% accuracy for 3 out of 3 trials.

    School Cafeteria:

During mealtime at the school cafeteria, Juan will maintain conversation on a preferred

topic with one of his classmates for at least 5 minutes every day for one week.

    Fast Food Restaurant:

While at a fast food restaurant, Juan will order and pay for his own meal, completing all

mandatory steps of the task analysis correctly for three consecutive occasions.
