FB&D Offices Celebrate Pi Day
P A G E 1 7 V O L U M E 2 , I S S U E 2
How many pastry chefs does it take to make a pie? 3.14 Every year, March 14 is celebrated as " Pi Day" by math enthusiasts around the world. Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Regardless of the size of the circle, pi is always the same number - approximately 3.141592653. Some people even shorten it further to 3.14, which is the reason "Pi Day" is celebrated on March 14 (3/14). March 14, 2015 was the only day of the century where the first five digits in pi were represented - 3.14.15.
Employees from all FB&D offices celebrated "Pi Day" on Thursday, March 12, by feasting on cherry pies, chocolate pies and apple pies, just to name a few. Employees enjoyed taking a break out of their busy day to chat with one another over a nice piece of pie. Some employees even took the time to send appreciative emails to management such as "It was outstanding" and "Great Pi", in honor of the day. One Project Manager's email stated that "Engineers use pi = 3.14. We call that 'close enough' ".
Did you know the roundest
knight at King Arthur's round
table was Sir Cumference?
Why? Too much Pi.

Forgotten Materials of Construction Objective: Move a fluid from Point "A" to Point "B".
Method: Pipeline
Material of Construction: Wood
WOOD?? Yup...Wood!!!
Today when we think pipe, we commonly think of carbon steel, ductile iron, stainless steel, fiberglass, plastic or any number of other specialty materials chosen to meet the specific requirements of the service we are designing for. What would we do if these were not available or just did not exist? We might just do exactly what those that built our nation did. We would use the resources at hand.
Bored Hemlock Water Pipe Laid About 1754
In the early years of our nation, trees were abundant.
Logs would be bored and fitted end to end to form a
pipeline. These pipelines were used to move fresh water as
well as sewage.
The Old Wooden Victoria Pipeline at Upper Peninsula Power Company’s Victoria Hydroelectric Station
Need more volume than a bored log can provide?
Simply cut some staves and band them together to
form a pipeline. This method is still in use today in
many parts of the world where conventional
construction is cost or environmentally
prohibitive.

TRENT SMITH, Civil/Structural Designer, Baton Rouge “I usually eat a healthy breakfast
and lunch, and then I do a good
work out immediately after
work. Plus I can do more
relaxing on the weekends this
way. Sometimes I shoot pool
with friends after work instead.”
LONNIE ROBIN, Civil/Structural Designer, New Orleans “ I develop some fun interest outside of work and devote attention to that when away from the office. I do photography as a hobby. I formed a group with other photographers where we shoot once a month, rain or shine. It helps me focus on something else that’s fun for me when I’m not here. It requires me to plan our outing along with the other photography I do during the month. My wife sews as a hobby which helps her de-stress."
JOHN PALOTTA, E/I Engineer, Greenville “When I get home, I visit with my wife to
catch up on family news, play with the
cat, feed the cat her supper, eat supper
with my wife, exercise while watching
TV, read the newspaper, read the Wall
Street Journal, check email, take care of
any required home or auto repairs, shop
with my wife on weekends, attend
church on Sunday, and have Sunday
supper with my adult children. If those
activities do not take up all my non-work
time, then I find a good book to read."

MICHAEL FOX, Electrical Specialist, West Monroe “Nothing like coming home
and getting hit in the face
with a dart from a nerf gun.
Shoot or be shot.....you have
to forget about work :)"
PRISCILLA LOTT, Receptionist, Baton Rouge " I shake off the day by taking care of my animals, and
especially enjoy it when the weather is nice. But if it isn’t,
I head for my diet Dr. Pepper and watch one of my
favorite recorded episodes on TV, (recliner optional)"
ARUNA RAGHAVAN, Project Controls/Project Engineer, Greenville " A Snickers bar gets me thru those deadline days with
the quick energy boost...Works!!"
