Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) is an international education program for secondary school students (ages 13-18) to learn about humanitarian action, international law, and justice. The program provides teachers with educational resources that supplement curriculum requirements in the Social Sciences and Humanities, Law, Geography, English, Religious Studies, and History in Ontario.

The conference is offered free of charge to all interested teachers in Ontario. Participants will receive comprehensive instructions from a Canadian Red Cross Legal Advisor, ICRC Delegates who have worked in conflict zones and Ontario teachers currently using the EHL curriculum in their classrooms. Topics include the humanitarian perspective, limits in war, international justice, and international responses to the consequences of war. Each Participant will get an EHL Toolkit with classroom-ready lesson plans and supplementary materials addressing a variety of different teaching methodologies.

EHL TEACHERS CONFERENCE30 NOVEMBER – 1 DECEMBER 2012

Speakers will include:

Ilario Maoilo: Ilario Maoilo has worked in a number of legal advisory positions for the Canadian Red Cross since 2004 and currently serves as Senior Legal Advisor in the Humanitarian Issues department. His duties include advising the Society on matters relating to International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and promoting humanitarian and other conflict-related issues with key stakeholders including government departments, the armed forces and academia. He has also worked in a private capacity in Europe and as a consultant for the Government of Canada - most recently for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

ICRC Delegate: International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegates carry out various activities in their endeavour to fulfill the ICRC’s humanitarian mission to protect and assist victims of armed conflicts. As representatives of the ICRC, they liaison and negotiate with government authorities – both civilian and military – in order to carry out their work as effectively as possible. Other delegate duties include visiting prisoners of war and political detainees, restoring contact between family members, carrying out relief operations, and promoting IHL and the principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Canadian Judge Advocat e General Representative : The office of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) is the legal branch of the Canadian Armed Forces and judge advocates serve primarily as legal advisors covering a wide range of issues. Judge Advocates are also charged with advising commanding officers in operational theaters to uphold the ethical and legal principles established by both the Canadian Armed Forces and the Government of Canada. They also serve as prosecutors and defence councils for the military when conducting court-martials and highly experienced judge advocates often serve as military judges.

Andrew Cresswell: Andrew Cresswell is the curricular head of the Canadian & World Studies, Social Science & Humanities department at Humberview Secondary School in Bolton, Ontario and is currently completing his Master's Degree in Education at Nippising University. Andrew was a participant in last years EHL teachers’ conference and has been one of our most active supporters of the EHL program.  In June 2012, Andrew participated in the Canadian Red Cross/University of Ottawa IHL Summer Course. At the EHL teachers conference, he, along with teacher champion Marilyn Wylie will be discussing his experience with the EHL curriculum, how he uses the EHL resources and materials in his lesson planning, student reactions to and engagement with the EHL resources, and the EHL program's pedagogical implications in the classroom.

Marilyn Wylie: Marilyn Wylie is the head of the History department at Ancaster High School. She has been teaching with the former Wentworth County Board of Education and the HWDSB for 18 years. Marilyn is an alumni of the Teachers Institute for Parliamentary Democracy in Ottawa. Marilyn was also a participant in last years EHL teachers’ conference and has been a dedicated EHL teacher champion.  In February 2012, Marilyn presented her experiences teaching EHL to curricular heads within the Toronto District School Board. Along with Andrew, she will be discussing her experiences with the EHL curriculum, how she uses the EHL resources and materials in her lesson planning, student reactions to and engagement with the EHL resources, and the EHL program's pedagogical implications in the classroom.

Taunya Pynn Crowe: Taunya Pynn Crowe has taught in the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board in Nova Scotia since 1994, and she currently teaches in the Social Studies department at Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro. Ms. Pynn Crowe received her EHL training in 2007 and has been implementing the curriculum in her grade 12 Global History classes ever since. As a result of the training she received at the EHL Teachers’ Conference, she joined the EHL teacher network and has facilitated workshops in Halifax and Wolfville, NS, Winnipeg, MB and Toronto, ON.
