What do you know/think aboutHealth Promotion?

It must be remembered that the purpose ofeducation is not to fill the minds of students

with facts... it is to teach them to think, if that

is possible, and always to think forthemselves.-- Robert Hutchins

    Health & Health Promotion

Health is really about creating communities

where it is easy for people to live, work, play,

and learn. It is about making sure that people

have a greater sense of control over their

lives, are connected with their families and

friends, and are involved in making health

    choices the easier choices.

    School Health

When schools do not deal with

childrens health by design they deal with

it by default until schools addressstudents health as directly as they do

math, reading and science, they will not

produce employable and productivegraduates.(Marx, Wooley and Northrop, 1998)

    Why do we needCSH?

  • 7/29/2019 EHE 300 - Powerpoint Monday, September 16

    18/33

    Why do we need CSH?

    Challenging economic, physical, and social

    conditions, fewer resources...

    Healthy learners are better learners.

Studies suggest that CSH is a cost-effectiveapproach to health as it promotes long term health.

Studies show that effective health instruction (i.e.,

teaching and learning within a healthy

environment) can change health attitudes and

    behaviours.

  • 7/29/2019 EHE 300 - Powerpoint Monday, September 16

    19/33

Why do we need CSH? (continued)

Health promotion can help individuals to

improve their eating habits or increase their

physical activity. However, from experience, people know that knowledge alone is not

    enough.

  • 7/29/2019 EHE 300 - Powerpoint Monday, September 16

    20/33

Why do we need CSH? (continued)

    Simply telling people to exercise

more, eat less fat and more

    vegetables and avoid tobacco has

not resulted in enough change inbehaviours to keep them healthy.

Most people find it difficult to behave

    differently than their friends

    21/33

Why do we need CSH? (continued) Creating environments where

healthy behaviour is the norm will

    support healthier choices byindividuals.
