Fruit and vegetable flash cards – Teachers’ notes In this activity, children are shown picture cards of different fruit and vegetables. They are challenged to name as many as they can in 30 seconds. A running scoreboard is kept during the activity and the final winner, who names the most in the 30 seconds, is announced at a future celebration assembly and is awarded a prize, e.g. a fruit basket. An alternative option is to use real fruit and vegetables instead of the cards. Equipment:

• fruit and vegetable flash cards

(provided in this pack);

• laminator(if you wish to laminate the

picture cards);

• two chairs;

• stopwatch/timer;

• scoreboard (provided in this pack);

• pen or pencil.

Instructions 1. Prior to the Health festival, cut out the fruit and vegetable flash

cards and laminate them.

2. On the day of the Health festival, place two chairs facing opposite each other.

3. To start the activity ask a child to sit in one chair and sit yourself in the other.

4. Explain that you will show them pictures of fruit and vegetables and they have to

name as many as they can in 30 seconds. If they do not know an answer, they can

guess or say ‘pass’ - you will then show the next card.

5. Time 30 seconds using a timer or stopwatch.

6. Show the child the cards individually and count how many they get right in the 30

seconds.

7. After the 30 seconds is up, tell the child how many they got right and put their name

and the number of correct answers on the scoreboard.

8. At the celebration assembly, reveal the child who named the most fruit and

vegetables in the 30 seconds and awarded them with a certificate and a fruit or

vegetable themed prize, e.g. a fruit basket.

Ways to adapt this activity

• Extend the time limit.

• Use real fruit and vegetables instead of the cards.
