Community suppport expoThe Department of Human Services mobile office will be in Eumundi on Tuesday 21 May from 9am to 4pm opposite the Imperial Hotel, Memorial Dr, offering private consultations in a number of services. The staff onboard include; a social worker, a Medicare representative and child support and Australian hearing staff. A number of referrals result from the visits and follow up contact is made for people needing further support.

Be quick – Head off negative reviews and comments by responding quickly and with empathy for the customer. Even if you disagree, avoid a debate about it as these conversations can spiral out of control. It’s best not to fight angry people on the internet. Use variety – Social media is a great way to communicate promotions and new products, however try to avoid bombarding customers with the “hard sell” all the time and mix up your Tweets or status updates with other messages that represent your brand. Watch the clock – As every Uni student in the country will tell you – social media is the ultimate procrastination device. This applies to social media marketing activities too, it is very easy to get distracted, so allocate a set amount of time. This is just the tip of the Social Media iceberg and it is a phenomenon that is constantly growing and changing. It is fun and wise to be part of it from the get go, especially if you need to start reaching people outside your immediate community to market your product.

POLICE INVOLVEMENT IN CIVIL DISPUTES: A number of calls

for service recently has seen various people in civil disputes trying to involve the police to that person’s benefit (and with the clear intent of causing damage to the other person involved in the dispute). I reiterate that police will not get involved in civil disputes – beyond keeping the peace in certain situations – regarding property matters. Examples of such civil disputes include matters involving residential tenancy, failed business enterprises, breaches of contract, civil torts, marriage breakdowns – including property settlements and child custody – defamation

and slander. Each individual complaint will be assessed on its specific circumstances (and there can be some overlap in certain circumstances) however, as a general rule, if there is no evidence of a breach of the criminal law then police cannot and will not become involved.

The Body Art Carnivale was another huge success and I’d

like to congratulate the organisers, volunteers, artists and everyone involved in making this event such a great attraction for visitors to Eumundi – well done.

I’ve received a number of requests from concerned parents regarding the installation of a bus stop at 110 Estate. Translink won’t be supplying a shelter for the location so I have been investigating ways that Council might be able to help with the situation. With budget tightening happening at every turn at the moment the best option is likely to be a recycled and refurbished shelter. I’ll keep checking out the options and hopefully will have some news for you soon.

Now that the rainy season has passed the condition of rural roads

is an issue I’ve been hearing from people about. I understand that locals who live and travel along dirt and gravel roads are feeling frustrated particularly given the number of potholes across the entire region. It’s going to take many months to complete all the maintenance required and Council is doing all it can with the resources that it has.

send a picture of an error to a helpful friend or support technician. Here are some ways to do it.To capture the entire desktop, press Command-Shift-3. The screen shot will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop.To copy the entire desktop to your clipboard (so you can then paste it into another program ie. an email) press Command-Control-Shift-3. To capture a portion of the desktop, press Command-Shift-4. A cross-hair cursor will appear and you can click and drag to select the area you wish to capture.To capture a specific application window, press Command-Shift-4, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will change to a camera, and you can move it around the screen. As you move the cursor over an application window, the window will be highlighted. When you have the cursor over a window you want to capture, just click the mouse button and the screen shot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop. Eumundi Organistations

This series is intended to give the community a greater insight

into its organisations. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate the contribution these organisations have made to Eumundi and district communities.

The first article, (issue 168) provided a chart showing key objectives, people, contact details and the links between the six organisations. A common element between them is that even though some of these groups have been operating and providing community service in one form or another for a number of years – well before the Eumundi markets grew into what they are today – all of them are currently involved in some way with the existing markets, in particular, those markets and the associated car parks operating on public land under arrangements with the Sunshine Coast Council. Any groups associated with markets on private land are outside the scope of these articles.

Each organisation has a different history of association. Incorporated

associations established under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (Qld): The Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA) Eumundi District and Community Association (EDCA) Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC)

Limited by guarantee not-for profit companies incorporated under the Commonwealth Corporations Act 2001: Eumundi Combined Community Organisation, Ltd (ECCO) Eumundi Historical Foundation Ltd (EHF) Original Eumundi Markets Ltd (OEM)

Eumundi Combined Community Organisation Ltd (ECCO) is a legal combination of three existing incorporated associations: EHA, EDCA, ECC and put simply, the EHF and OEM were set up to provide more suitable management structures to improve the effectiveness of EHA and to manage what had become a large and complex business operation.

This has become an increasingly common choice for organisations which may start out as incorporated associations, but find that due to changes in their membership and operations, such as the need to employ staff and changed funding arrangements, a public company limited by guarantee is a better structure.

Not-for-profit community groups can be unregistered bodies acting under their own rules, e.g. book clubs, mother’s groups. While Eumundi associations in this series began this way, for most organisations the choice is between incorporation and company status:

Incorporated associations in Queensland groups must apply for incorporation under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 and meet stringent criteria including existing status, numbers of members, how managed, including finances and members’ rights. Incorporation provides protection to the management committee from personal liability for the actions of the incorporated

association, provided they are carried out in good faith and due diligence.

A company limited by guarantee is incorporated under the Commonwealth Corporations Act and can, by registering once, carry out its activities anywhere in Australia. It can operate as a board rather than management committee. The duties and liability of board members, reporting requirements are more onerous but more flexible than for a committee of management. For some organisations which start out as incorporated associations, the passage of time, growth in activities and membership and the ongoing commercialised nature of their operations (including funding arrangements and the employment of staff), a public company limited by guarantee is a better structure News release, Muccullough Robertson, February 2012.

In the Spotlight

My father died in New Guinea in December 1942, four

months before I was born. It was a very sad time for my mother who was notified by a telegram boy on a pushbike. One can only imagine how devastated she would have been. All my life I have enjoyed stories about my father, his life, his family, and wondered what might have been.

Twelve years ago my wife Anne and I visited his grave at Bomana, with my mother for the first time. The cemetery is a magnificent tribute to nearly 4000 war dead.

Bomana is rather like an oasis

amongst the hills and valleys in the area. It is a place with an overriding feeling of peace and beauty and is landscaped and maintained by the Australian Government. There are more Australians in this War Cemetery than any other around the world.

The hostile nature of Papua New Guinea’s terrain contributed in large measure to the terrible infantry casualties there. Advancing along a narrow front, sometimes literally as wide as a foot track, progress was measured by the speed at which a man could walk. Only through vicious,

close quarter fighting were the Japanese dislodged from their well sited foxholes or bunkers.

This Anzac Day, Anne and I and our three children, Amy, Kate and Robert (pictured) visited Bomana. It was a wonderful family experience and an opportunity for our children to get a stronger sense of the grandfather they never knew. The Port Moresby Branch of the RSL made a great effort for us. They provided us with seats at the Dawn Service in the VIP area just behind our Governor General, Quentin Bryce, who was the Guest of Honour.

They also provided a wreath for me to lay in my father’s honour. A moving highlight at the end of the formalities was a flyover by four Australian Blackhawk Helicopters.

Following the service, the RSL invited us to their annual Gunshot Breakfast at the Australian High Commission and later in the day there was typical Australian mateship and Two-Up at the Yacht Club. As a family we will all treasure this memorable and emotional pilgrimage.

It is now over 70 years since my father died and although I never met him I think of him every day.

North Arm State School is proud to shout it has many amazing

students in all year levels, but particularly, in the Senior Year 6 and Year 7 classes. Many of those students have already previously been acknowledged by receiving leadership positions including School Captain, Sporting Team Captain and Student Council Captains.

However that created a problem. There were just so many more wonderful senior students at the school, who really deserved to be acknowledged for their great leadership skills. At North Arm State School, the students are taught that “Leadership is any action I take to make my school, community or world a better place” and “Leaders can come from anywhere”.

What is your favourite subject at school? I really love Drama because I know I can act as crazy as I want to be. I spend nearly every afternoon doing some sort of commitment – Dancing, Jazz Band, Drama Rehearsal or Orchestra – and of course chilling with my friends.Have you always liked singing and acting?I have been performing to friends and parents since I was three years old. My life is completely filled with singing especially from singing in the car to singing on the stage. Now I’m getting very excited to be performing in front of hundreds of people.What role are you playing in your school’s production of The Sound of Music?I’m playing the role of Maria Rainer, who is hoping to become a nun. She is cheeky and playful so she is always finding herself in trouble. This leads to her taking a break from her life at the Abbey and she is sent to be a governess to Captain Von Trapp’s seven children. Do you get nervous before a performance?Yes, definitely! I’m having nervous dreams. Although it’s the nerves that make me extra pumped and excited to make my performance even better.

What are your dreams after finishing school?I would love to travel around the world and then go to university and study music and drama. The Good Shepherd performance of The Sound of Music at Noosaville SS Hall is on Friday the 31 May; matinee on Saturday 1 June, and 7pm the same night. Body Art Carnivale 2013

A colourful crowd opened the Body Art weekend at a cocktail party at the funky Bohemian Bungalow on Friday night. The winner of last year’s Brush and Sponge category Nina Neher

Saturday night’s event at the School of Arts saw a capacity crowd of 150 watch the local speed body painting competition using local models.

Groover’s Dubba Ray played and there was an auction and raffles. Best fancy dressed table was the cricketers and their wags who not only dressed the part but stayed in role all night.

The atmosphere at this year’s Australian Body Art Carnivale was vibrant and relaxed. On both days brief showers failed to dampen the competitors’ sunny enthusiasm or keep away a healthy

crowd of people, media and photographers. The weekend saw some stunning artworks created on bodies and car bonnets, fashion and faces. The kids got involved too, creating miniature body art with dolls for their own competition. Music, food, street performers and friendly volunteers added to the fantastic vibe. Three years ago The Indee presented a Saturday evening recital by the 5th Avenue Quintet. Whilst they were generally unknown to locals,

we nonetheless attracted a good house, which was very rewarding. The crowd reaction was terrific. Letters appeared in local papers in praise of the recital and one in particular that was seen in Eumundi Green from Chris Hartley summed it up. To para-phrase (from memory) Chris wrote that she’d first thought she wouldn’t bother attending but then changed her mind for what was a tremendously entertaining night. She was so glad that she made the effort. Since then the group has gone on to attract a following and changed its name to the Elyseum Ensemble. A standard wind quintet consists of oboe, flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon, however the Elysium quintet is far from the average chamber group. The five members are all freelance musicians and perform with QLD Symphony Orchestra, QLD Pops Orchestra, Camerata of St Johns and Sinfonia of St Andrews as well as others.

IngredientsBreadcrumbs of 8 slices gluten free bread, crusts removed1 beaten organic egg 1 cup cooked, mashed pumpkin250ml cream3 whole organic eggsFreshly ground nutmeg½ cup pecan nuts, chopped½ bunch garlic chives, chopped

Ingredients500g green beans3 handfuls prepared sorrel (pull the stalks away from leaves)150ml macadamia oil½ medium onion, finely chopped4 cloves garlic, minced

MethodMix breadcrumbs and 1 beaten

egg together.Lightly oil small muffin pan.Squeeze in the bread mix and

press to form a shell (be patient).Prebake shells at 180C for 15

minutes.Mix the pumpkin with the rest of

the ingredients.Spoon into the prepared tart

shells.Return to the oven for a further 15

minutes.

MethodTop and blanch beans in boiling water,

refresh in iced water. Strain and pull apart lengthwise, reserve.Warm the oil in a pan, add onion and

garlic. Cook for a few minutes on low. Cover, set aside for 10 minutes.Put back on heat, add sorrel, stir

until it wilts. Add the beans and warm through.

When you bring together a renowned organic gardener and a well-known local chef, you have the perfect ingredients for all that’s

good and local.That’s what happens when gardener Leonie Shanahan, well-known on the Coast from her Edible School Gardens, and Max Porter of Native Sun Cuisine collaborate to present Harvest, Garden and Create a Feast workshops.When Leonie was unable to obtain funding for her school gardens projects she realised she needed to diversify. “Friends would comment on the work I’d done on my Cooroibah property,” she says. “I’d experimented with growing, I love learning, and I wanted to make my property work. I realised I had something to teach people and decided to run organic gardening workshops.”Leonie’s driver is healthy eating, which she says starts in the soil. “It’s about getting the message out that rather than ‘think convenience’, growing and eating your own food has long term benefits for health.”Leonie came to the conclusion that she couldn’t just run two gardening workshops per month and introduced other aspects and people – enter Max Porter. They had worked together in the schools program and Leonie admires his philosophies of wanting to know the source of food and the ethos of the growers and producers, his deep knowledge of food and that he’s simply good fun. “He adds in important hints and information about the ingredients and how to get the best value from any food,” she says. In his vegetable menus called “Vegi-Might”, as with all his work, Max employs “what tradition tells us and an awareness of clean food”, treating his ingredients, whatever they are, with respect through the entire preparation process. Leonie recalls a great compliment they received: “You are both very giving and don’t hold back on your knowledge, it is shared!” For Leonie that’s what it’s about.The good word is spreading and Leonie is surprised and delighted that she and Max have been invited to run a gardening and cooking demonstration at the World Environment Day Festival at the University of the Sunshine Coast on 9 June.Leonie starts the workshops in her garden where the participants “get grubby” harvesting the food needed for Max’s seasonal menu. “I cover the best methods for growing and harvesting so that the plants keep giving,” Leonie says. “We discuss seasonal crops, the what, how and why of planting and companion plants.”Harvesting done and with baskets full of fresh produce, the workshop members move into the kitchen to create a vegetarian feast to celebrate together. Recently we received a ground parrot that had been rescued

by one of the Noosa Northshore rangers. She’s a gorgeous bird but has suffered a broken bone in her wing and time will tell if she is able to make a full recovery and be returned to the wild. If not, being an endangered species, she will be kept in permanent care for breeding.

The Ground Parrot is also known as the Swamp Parrot or Button-grass Parrot. It is a small, extremely shy bird and is not usually seen unless flushed out from cover or injured. It has a bright grass-green with black and yellow markings and a prominent pale yellow wing bar. The tail is handsomely long, graceful and barred with yellow and it has a small red band on the lower forehead.

The Ground Parrot is very distinctive due to its size and markings, but when singing, can be confused with the vocal chords of the Tawny-crowned Honeyeater. This species is found in isolated populations along the east coast from south-east coastal Queensland and in patches in north-east and southern New South Wales. It is also found in coastal areas of Gippsland in

The “War on Weeds” is taking place throughout May, as

residents swap weeds from their gardens for free native trees. Community Programs Portfolio Cr Jenny McKay said the weed swaps were underway and would occur at 37 different locations over the next few weeks.

“The ‘War on Weeds’ is part of Council’s Community Nature Conservation program that assists local volunteer groups in their work restoring bush land, wetlands, coastal foreshores and waterways projects across the Sunshine Coast,” she said.

“It represents an ongoing partnership between Council and the community in protecting and enhancing biodiversity on Council owned land at the local level through actively involving and engaging volunteers in habitat restoration.

“Around 750 volunteers will be undertaking ‘working bees’ at the various weed swap sites across the region and providing useful advice to residents who turn up to swap their weeds for native trees.”

Although we never like to see any bird arrive injured at our centre, we take some comfort in the fact we can at least do our best to keep this most beautiful and endangered bird in our heads and in our hearts.

Eumundi Green contributors Ed and Cher Boyd came across

a bird, apparently stunned, on a footpath at Eumundi. Indications were that it had flown into a window. It was an extremely hot and dry day; the bird – a kingfisher – was “panting” and obviously in distress. Placed in a shady bush and lightly sprinkled with cool water the bird made a quick recovery and, to Ed and Cher’s delight, flew off.

From Ed’s photograph we could tell it was a Forest Kingfisher, the absence of conspicuous white patches in front of the eyes showed that it was a sub-adult. But at this age it also had some of the colouration of the Azure Kingfisher e.g. a pale buff breast but the beak was definitely not

long enough. Forest Kingfishers, Todiramphus macleayii are the third largest Australian kingfishers after the Laughing and Blue-winged Kookaburras. The genus name Todiramphus means “with a beak like a tody” and todies are a Caribbean bird like a plump little kingfisher. Macleay was an ornithologist. Forest Kingfishers’ usual habitat is the coastal forests (not rainforests) and woodlands in a narrow belt from northern NSW up the east coast of Queensland. It is interesting that some birds are migratory while others remain through the winter.

We have a pair arriving on our property in late October every year. They raise two consecutive sets of twins and are gone by March, along with their young. We notice

that another pair further down our road stays over the cold months, as does a pair in the next street. Why do “ours” migrate to north Queensland or New Guinea but these neighbouring ones do not?

We are actually glad to see them go because while they are here they are tyrannical and no other bird is safe from their swift attacks during which they give their shrill staccato battle-cry. Willie Wagtails are especially persecuted and have learnt to stay away in summer.

We are also not too pleased with them decimating our lawn and garden skink population but to be fair they also remove a lot of insect pests. They have amazing eyesight and pounce down from a perch on prey as far as 60 or 70

metres away, always over land, never over our dam. The name “kingfisher” does not seem apt.

Every year they nest in the same disused termite mound high up in a tree. If a termite mound does not have a suitable hole, several species of kingfishers are known to fly repeatedly beak first into the mound until a suitable opening is made. Occasionally this head-butting results in death from a broken neck. This reckless approach might explain why kingfishers so commonly fly into windows, as did the one found by Ed and Cher. We have had to pick “ours” up quite a few times after they have knocked themselves out against our glass while doing a bit of “window shopping”.

Gardening

Autumn is a gorgeous time for gardening, and there is

always lots to do. The pruning secateurs get a real workout - tidying perennials, getting rid of dead wood and cutting back vines. There are three mains reasons for pruning. The first is to remove dead or diseased wood, the second is to promote more flowering and fruit, and the third is to have a shapely, attractive plant. Pruning also stimulates new growth. A chemical is contained in each terminal bud, or leader and once removed it allows the buds below to break, producing a much bushier plant. As arule of thumb when pruning, don’t cut more than a third off a plant.

Be sure not to make the mistake of pruning back everything in the garden; if you do, you might miss spring blossoms. A Wisteria, for example, has already set its spring buds - look for the flowering spur and leave it because pruning that means missing its spring flush. When pruning always use sharp tools; if the cut is torn or bruised

the healing process will be slower. To stop the spread of disease from one plant to another, always dip tools and secateurs in bleach or disinfectant and wipe them before moving onto the next plant.

Autumn is also a good time to feed the lawn. The growth of grass slows down with cooler nights, but the roots are still growing well because the soil is still warm. Use a slow release lawn food to develop a strong root system and thicker grass. If your lawn is old, take a pH test. Old lawns are often acidic and can be corrected with an application of lime. Where paths or thoroughfares become compacted and the grass does not grow, it is usually due to poor aeration. That means grabbing a pitchfork, jabbing it in and loosening the ground. Another technique is to strap on aerating shoes and walk over the lawn. You might also need to add lawn seed. Use lawn seed over any kikuyu, couch or buffalo lawn. You should end up with a lush green cover over winter.

A child sized foam dummy is used in a “stopping distance” class to demonstrate the e�ect of a car hitting a child. Impact speed was approximately 10 KPH.

Recently driver Bob Mitchell and the community bus played an important shuttle role in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness education program at the House with No Steps at Doonan. The program aims to reduce death and injury amongst young people and has been developed in consultation with the police, transport and road safety authorities. Each year over 5000 16-17 year old Queensland students undergo the program, at a time in their life when they are learning to drive, or riding in cars driven by peers. Rotary and the authorities are keen to change the statistics that currently show that people aged 17-25 years make up 26% of all road deaths but represent less than 15% of the population.

Upgrade of directional signage in Eumundi Sunshine Coast Council is updating and upgrading directional signage in Eumundi over the next month or two. The changes are intended to remove obsolete Main Roads signs and to improve tra�c management and access to car parks.Before commencing the work, Council is seeking community feedback on this upgrade design. A copy of the draft design document “Eumundi Parking Sign Upgrade” may be found on the home page of www.eumundicco.com.au. Emailed feedback from individuals or organisations is welcome and should be sent to [email protected] by 9am Monday 20 May. The feedback will be provided to Council sta� to assist in �nalising the design project.
