Step 1: UnpackingRemoveyournewMartinLoganspeakersfromtheirpacking.

Step 2: PlacementPlacespeakersatthedesiredlocationandanglethemslightlytowardyourprimarylisteningarea.Thisisagoodplacetostart.PleaseseethePlacementsectionoftheenclosedmanualformoredetails.

Step 3: Power Connection (AC) (see warning)MartinLogan speakers requireACpower toenergize theirelectrostaticcells.UsingtheACpowercordsprovided,plugthemin first to theACpowerreceptacleon therearpanelof the speaker, making sure that you havemade a firmconnection, and then to the wall outlet. Please see theOperationssectionoftheenclosedmanualformoredetails.

Step 4: Signal ConnectionUsethebestspeakercablesyoucan.Higherqualitycable,avail-ablefromyourspecialtydealer,isrecommendedandwillgiveyousuperiorperformance.Spadeconnectorsaresuggestedforoptimumcontactandeaseofinstallation.

AttachyourspeakercablestotheSignalInputsectionontherearpanel.Beconsistentwhenconnectingspeakerleadstotheterminalsonthebackofthespeaker:takegreatcaretoassignthesamecolortothe(+)terminalonboththeleftandrightchannels.Ifbassisnonexistentandyoucannotdiscernatight,coherentimage,youmayneedtoreversethe(+)and(–)leadsononesidetobringthesystemintoproperpolarity.

Low-Voltage (DC) Power Connection

YourEFXspeakersuseexternallow-voltagepowersuppliestoenergizetheirelectrostaticpanels.Forthisreasontheproperlow-voltagepower supplies areprovided.Apower supplyshouldbefirmlyinsertedintothe‘DCPowerIn’receptacleontherearconnectionpanelofeachspeaker,thentoanyconve-nientACwalloutlet.YourEFXspeakersintegrateasignalsensingcircuitwhichwillswitchtheEFXoffafterafewminutesofnomusicsignal,andrequireslessthantwosecondstorechargethepanelswhenamusicsignalispresent.

YourEFXspeakersareprovidedwithapowersupplyforthepowerservicesuppliedinthecountryoforiginalconsumersale.TheACpowerrequirementsapplicabletoaparticularunitisspecifiedbothonthepackingcartonandontheDCpowersup-ply.

IfyouremoveyourEFXspeakersfromthecountryoforiginalsale,becertainthattheACpowersuppliedinanysubsequentlocationissuitablebeforeconnectingthelow-voltagepowersupply.SubstantiallyimpairedperformanceorseveredamagemayoccurtoaEFXspeakerifoperationisattemptedfromanincorrectACpowersource.

WARNING! TheDCpower supply shouldnotbeinstalled,removed,orleftdetachedfromthespeakerwhileconnectedtoanACpowersource.

Speaker Level Connection

Usethebestspeakercablesyoucan.Thelengthandtypeofspeakercableusedinyoursystemwillhaveanaudibleeffect.Undernocircumstanceshouldawireofgaugehigher(thinner)than#16beused.Ingeneral,thelongerthelengthused,thegreaterthenecessityofalowergauge,andthelowerthegauge,thebetterthesound,withdiminishingreturnssettinginaround#8to#12.

Avarietyofcablesareavailablewhosemanufacturersclaimbetterperformancethanstandardheavygaugewire.Wehaveverifiedthisinmanycases,andtheimprovementsavailableareoftenmorenoticeablethanthedifferencesbetweenwiresofdif-ferentgauge.Theeffectsofcablesmaybemaskedifequipmentisnotofthehighestquality.

ConnectionsaredoneatthesignalinputsectionontherearelectronicspaneloftheEFX.Usespadeconnectorsforoptimumcontactandeaseofinstallation.Handtightenthebindingposts,butdonotovertighten—donotuseatooltotightenthebindingposts.

Beconsistentwhenconnectingthespeakercablestothesignalinputterminals.Takecaretoassignthesamecolorcableleadtothe(+)terminalonboththeleftandrightchannelspeakers.Ifbassisnonexistentandyoucannotdiscernatight,coherentimage,youmayneedtoreversethe(+)and(–)leadsononespeakertobringthesystemintoproperpolarity.

WARNING! Turnyouramplifieroffbeforemakingorbreakinganysignalconnections!

Break-In

WhenyoufirstbegintoplayyourEFXspeakers,theywillsoundabitbassshy.Thisisduetothehighquality,long-lifecompo-nentsusedinourwoofer.Ourcustommade,butylsurroundwooferrequiresapproximately72hoursofbreak-inat90dB(moderate listening levels)beforeanycritical listening.Thebreak-inrequirementsofthecrossovercomponents(and,toalesserdegree,thestator)areequivalent.WARNING!InstallingtheEFXonawallrequiresonly1person,butanassistantwillbehelpful.

Standing WavesTheparallelwallsinyourroomwillreinforcecertainnotestothepointthattheywillsoundlouderthantherestoftheaudiospectrumandcause“onenotebass”,“boomybass”or“bloatedbass”.Forinstance,100Hzrepresentsa10feetwavelength.Yourroomwillreinforcethatspecificfrequencyifoneofthedominantdimensionsis10feet.Largeobjectsintheroomsuchascabinetryorfurniturecanhelptominimizethispotentialproblem.Someserious“audiophiles”willliterallybuildaspecialroomwithnoparallelwallsjusttohelpeliminatethisphenomenon.

Reflective Surfaces (near-field reflections)Thehardsurfacesofyourroom,particularlyifclosetoyourspeakersystem,willreflectsomewavesbackintotheroomoverandoveragain,confusingtheclarityandimagingofyoursystem.Thesmallersoundwavesaremostlyaffectedhere,andoccurinthemidandhighfrequencies.Thisiswherevoiceandfrequen-ciesashighasthecymbalsoccur.

Resonant Surfaces and ObjectsAllof thesurfacesandobjects inyour roomare subject tothe frequencies generated by your system.Much like aninstrument, theywill vibrate and “carry on” in syncopa-tionwiththemusic,andcontributeinanegativewaytothemusic.Ringing,boominess,andevenbrightnesscanoccursimplybecause they are “singing along”with yourmusic.

Rules of Thumb

Hard vs. Soft SurfacesIfthefrontorbackwallofyourlisteningroomissoft,itmightbenefityoutohaveahardorreflectivewallinopposition.Theceilingandfloorshouldfollowthesamebasicguidelineaswell.However,thesidewallsshouldberoughlythesameinordertodeliverafocusedimage.

Thisrulesuggeststhatalittlereflectionisgood.Asamatteroffact,someroomscanbeso“overdamped”withcarpeting,drapesandsoundabsorbersthatthemusicsystemcansounddullandlife-less.Ontheotherhand,roomscanbesohardthatthesystemcansoundlikeagymnasiumwithtoomuchreflectionandbrightness.Thepointisthatbalanceistheoptimumenvironment.

Breakup ObjectsObjectswithcomplexshapes,suchasbookshelves,cabinetryandmultipleshapedwallscanhelpbreakupthosesonicgrem-linsanddiffuseanydominantfrequencies.

Dipolar Speakers and Your Room

MartinLoganelectrostaticloudspeakersareknownasdipolarradi-ators.Thismeansthattheyproducesoundfromboththeirfrontsandtheirbacks.Consequently,musicalinformationisreflectedbythewallbehindthemandmayarrive,eitherinoroutofstep,withtheinformationproducedbythefrontofthespeaker.

Nowthatyouknowabout reflectivesurfacesandresonantobjects,youcanseehowthemidrangeandhighfrequenciescanbeaffected.Thetimingoftheinitialwaveasitradiatestoyourears,andthenthereflectedinformationasitarrivesatyourearslaterintime,canresultinconfusionoftheprecioustim-inginformationthatcarriesthecluestoimaging.Consequentlytheresultisblurredimagingandexcessivebrightness.Softwalls,curtains,wallhangings,orsounddampeners(yourdealercangiveyougoodinformationhere)canbeeffectiveifthesenega-tiveconditionsoccur.

Controlled Horizontal Dispersion

YourEFX’slauncha30degreehorizontaldispersionpattern.Thishorizontaldispersionfieldgivesachoiceofgoodseatsfortheper-formancewhileminimizinginteractionswithsidewalls(seefigure16).Makesurebothspeakersstandexactlyatthesameverticalangle,otherwisetheimagecanbeskewedorpoorlydefined.Thewavelaunchofbothspeakersisextremelyaccurateinboththetimeandspectraldomain.Consequently,smallrefinedadjust-mentscanresultinnoticeablesonicimprovements.

Controlled Vertical Dispersion

Asyoucanseefromtheillustrations,yourEFXspeakersprojectacontrolleddispersionpattern(seefigure17).EachEFXisa28inchlinesource.Thisverticaldispersionprofileminimizesinter-actionswiththefloorandtheceiling.

Three Major Types of Dispersion

It isaknownfactthatasthesoundwavebecomesprogres-sivelysmallerthanthetransducerproducingit,thedispersionofthatwavebecomesmoreandmorenarrow,ordirectional.Thisfactoccursaslongasthetransducerisaflatsurface.Largeflatpanelspeakersexhibitvenetianblindeffectsduetothisphenomenon.Thisisonereasonwhymanymanufacturersoptforsmalldrivers(i.e.tweetersandmidrange)toapproximatewhatisknownasapointsourcewavelaunch.

Historically,mostattemptstoachievesmoothdispersionfromlargeflatpaneltransducersresultedintrade-offs.Afterexhaus-tive testing ofmany differentmethods,we conceived anelegantlysimple,yetintenselyhandcraftedprocess.Bycurvingtheradiatingsurface,wecreatetheeffectofahorizontalarc.ThisallowstheengineersatMartinLogantocontrolthehighfre-quencydispersionpatternofourtransducers.

Ithadlongbeenthepracticeofstereobuffstoconnecttheirtele-visiontoastereosystem.Theadvantagewastheuseofthelargerspeakersandmorepowerfulamplifierofthestereosystem.Eventhoughthesoundwasgreatlyimproved,itwasstillmonoandlim-itedbythebroadcastsignal.

Inthelate1970’sandearly1980’stwonewhomemoviefor-matsbecamewidelyavailabletothepublic:VCRandlaserdisc.

By1985,both formatshaddeveloped intoveryhighqual-ityaudio/videosources.Infact,thesonicperformanceofsomevideoformatsexceededaudio-onlyformats.Now,withtheater-qualitysoundavailableathome,theonlyelementmissingwasthe"surroundsound"presentationfoundinmoviehouses.

Fortunately,DolbyandDTSencodedmovies(includingalmostallfilms)havethesamesurroundsoundinformationencodedonhomereleasesasthetheatricalrelease.Allthatisrequiredtoretrievethisinformationisadecoderandadditionalspeakersandampstoreproduceit.

Hometheaterisacomplexpurchaseandwerecommendthatyouconsultyour localMartinLogandealer,astheyarewellversedinthissubject.

Eachpieceofasurroundsystemcanbepurchasedseparately.Takeyourtimeandbuyquality.Noonehasevercomplainedthat themoviewastooreal.Thefollowing listanddescrip-tionswillgiveyouonlyabriefoutlineoftheresponsibilitiesanddemandsplacedoneachspeaker.

Front Left and Front RightIfthesespeakerswillbethesametwousedforyourstereoplay-back,theyshouldbeofveryhighqualityandabletoplayloudly(over102dB)andreproducebassbelow80Hz.

Center ChannelThis is the most important speaker in a home theatersystem,asalmostallofthedialogueandalargeportionofthefrontspeakerinformationisreproducedbythecenterchannel.Itisimportantthatthecenterspeakerbeextremelyaccurateandmatewellthefrontspeakers,andthatitisrecommendedforuseasacenterspeaker.Thisisnottheplacetocutcorners.

Surround SpeakersWerecommend(alongwith the film industry) that thesur-roundspeakersplaydowntoatleast80Hz.Surroundspeakerscontaintheinformationthatmakesitappearthatplanesarefly-ingoveryourhead.Somemaysuggestthatthisistheplacetosavemoneyandpurchaseasmall,inexpensivespeaker.Ifyouchoosetodoso,bepreparedtoupgradeinthefutureasdis-cretemulti-channeldigitalencodingisproliferatingrapidlyandthedemandsonsurroundspeakershaveincreased.

SubwooferWithanygoodsurroundsystemyouwillneedoneormorehigh-qualitysubwoofers(the.1ina5.1channelsurroundsystem).Mostmoviesoundtrackscontainlargeamountsofbassinforma-tionaspartofthespecialeffects.Goodsubwooferswillprovideafoundationfortherestofthesystem.

Howcan soundbe reproducedby something thatyouareabletoseethrough?Electrostaticenergymakesthispossible.

Wheretheworldoftraditionalloudspeakertechnologydealswithcones,domes,diaphragmsandribbonsthataremovedwithmagnetism,theworldofelectrostaticloudspeakersdealswithchargedelectronsattractingandrepellingeachother.

To fullyunderstand theelectrostatic concept, someback-ground informationwill behelpful.Rememberwhen youlearned inascienceorphysicsclass that likechargesrepeleachotherandoppositechargesattracteachother?Well,thisprinciple is thefoundationoftheelectrostaticconcept.

Anelectrostatictransducerconsistsofthreepieces:stators,thediaphragmandspacers(seefigure19).Thediaphragmiswhatactuallymovestoexcitetheairandcreatemusic.Thestator’sjobistoremainstationary,hencethewordstator,andtopro-videareferencepointforthemovingdiaphragm.Thespacersprovidethediaphragmwithafixeddistanceinwhichtomovebetweenthestators.

Asyouramplifiersendsmusicsignalstoanelectrostaticspeaker,thesesignalsarechangedintotwohigh-voltagesignalsthatareequalinstrengthbutoppositeinpolarity.Thesehighvoltagesig-nalsarethenappliedtothestators.Theresultingelectrostaticfield,createdbytheopposinghighvoltageonthestators,workssimul-taneouslywithandagainstthediaphragm,consequentlymovingitbackandforth,producingmusic.Thistechniqueisknownas

push-pulloperationandisamajorcontributortothesonicpurityoftheelectrostaticconceptduetoitsexceptionallinearityandlowdistortion.

Sincethediaphragmofanelectrostaticspeakerisuniformlydrivenoveritsentirearea,itcanbeextremelylightandflexible.Thisallowsittobeveryresponsivetotransients,thusperfectlytracingthemusicsignal.Asaresult,greatdelicacy,nuanceandclarityispossible.Whenyoulookattheproblemsoftraditionalelectromagneticdrivers,youcaneasilyseewhythisissoben-eficial.Theconesanddomeswhichareused in traditionalelectromagneticdriverscannotbedrivenuniformlybecauseoftheirdesign.Conesaredrivenonlyattheapex.Domesaredriv-enattheirperimeter.Asaresult,therestoftheconeordomeis just “along for the ride”. The very concept of thesedrivers requires that the coneordomebeperfectly rigid,dampedandmassless.Unfortunately,theseconditionsarenotavailableinourworldtoday.

Tomaketheseconesanddomesmove,allelectromagneticdriv-ersmustusevoicecoilswoundonformers,spiderassemblies,andsurroundstokeeptheconeordomeinposition(seefig-ure20).Thesepieces,whencombinedwiththehighmassoftheconeordomematerialsused,makeitanextremelycom-plexunitwithmanyweaknessesandpotentialforfailure.Thesefaultscontributetothehighdistortionproductsfoundinthesedriversandisatremendousdisadvantagewhenyouaretryingtochangemotionasquicklyandasaccuratelyasaloudspeakermust(40,000timespersecond!).

Another significant advantage ofMartinLogan’s exclusivetransducertechnologyrevealsitselfwhenyoulookatexamplesofotherloudspeakerproductsonthemarkettoday.TheEFXusesnocrossovernetworksabove530Hzbecausetheyarenotneeded.TheEFXconsistsofasingle,seamlesselectrostaticmembranereproducingallfrequenciesabove530Hzsimulta-neously.Howisthispossible?

Firstwemustunderstandthatmusicisnotcomposedofseparatehigh,midandlowfrequencies.Infact,musiciscomprisedofasinglewaveformwithallfrequenciesinteractingsimultaneously.

Inthelate1800’s,anyloudspeakerwasconsideredexotic.Today,mostofustakethewondersofsoundreproductionforgranted.

It was 1880 before Thomas Edison had invented thefirst phonograph. This was a horn-loaded diaphragmthatwas excitedby aplayback stylus. In1898, SirOliverLodge inventeda cone loudspeaker,whichhe referred toasa“bellowingtelephone”,thatwasverysimilartothecon-ventional cone loudspeaker drivers thatwe know today.However,Lodgehadnointentionforhisdevicetoreproducemusicbecausein1898therewasnowaytoamplifyanelec-tricalsignal!Asaresult,hisspeakerhadnothingtoofferovertheacousticalgram-ophonesoftheperiod.Itwasnotuntil1906 thatDr.LeeDeForrest inventedthetriodevacuumtube.Beforethis,anelectricalsignalcouldnotbeamplified.Theloudspeaker,asweknowittoday,shouldhaveensuedthen,butitdidnot.Amazingly, itwasalmost twentyyearsbeforethiswouldoccur.

In 1921, the electrically cut phonograph record becamea reality.Thismethodof recordingwas far superior to themechanicallycutrecordandpossessedalmost30dBofdynamicrange.Theacousticalgramophonecouldn’tbegintoreproduceallof the informationon thisnewdisc.Asa result, furtherdevelopmentsinloudspeakerswereneededtocopewiththisamazingnewrecordingmedium.

By1923,thedecisionwasmadetodevelopacompletemusicalplaybacksystemconsistingofanelectronicphonographandaloud-speakertotakeadvantageofthenewrecordingmedium.Theprojecttotwoyoungengineers,C.W.RiceandE.W.Kellogg.

RiceandKellogghadawellequippedlaboratoryattheirdispos-al.Thislabpossessedavacuumtubeamplifierwithanunheardof200watts,alargeselectionofthenewelectricallycutpho-nographrecordsandavarietyofloudspeakerprototypesthathadbeencollectingoverthepastdecade.AmongthesewereLodge’scone,aspeakerthatusedcompressedair,acoronadis-charge(plasma)speaker,andanelectrostaticspeaker.

Afterashorttime,RiceandKellogghadnarrowedthefieldof“contestants”downtotheconeandtheelectrostat.Theout-comewoulddictatethewaythatfuturegenerationswouldrefertoloudspeakersasbeingeither“conventional”or“exotic”.

Theirelectrostatwassomethingtobehold.Thisenormousbipo-larspeakerwasasbigasadoor.Thediaphragm,whichwas

beginningtorot,wasmadeofapigintestinethatwascoveredwithfinegoldleaftoconducttheaudiosignal.

WhenRiceandKelloggbeganplaying thenewelectricallycut records throughtheelectrostat, theywerestunnedandimpressed.Theelectrostatperformedsplendidly.Theyhadneverheardinstrumentaltimbresreproducedwithsuchrealism.Thissystemsoundedlikerealmusicratherthanthehonking,squawkingrenditionoftheacousticgramophone.Immediately,theyknewtheywereontosomethingbig.Theacousticgramo-phonewasdestinedtobecomeobsolete.

Due toRice andKellogg’s enthusiasm,theydevotedaconsiderableamountoftimeresearchingtheelectrostaticdesign.However,theysoonencounteredthesamedifficultiesthatevenpresentdesignersface;planarspeakersrequireaverylargesurfaceareatoreproducethelowerfrequenciesoftheaudiospectrum.Becausetheman-

agementconsideredlargespeakersunacceptable,RiceandKellogg’sworkonelectrostaticswouldneverbeputtouseforacommercialproduct.Reluctantly,theyadvisedmanagementtogowiththecone.Forthenext30years,theelectrostaticdesignlaydormant.

DuringtheGreatDepressionof the1930’s,consumeraudioalmostdied.Thenewelectricallyamplifiedloudspeakernevergainedacceptance,asmostpeoplecontinuedtousetheiroldVictrola-styleacousticgramophones.PriortotheendofWorldWarII,consumeraudiosawlittle,ifany,progress.However,dur-ingthelate1940’s,audioexperiencedagreatrebirth.Suddenlytherewastremendousinterestinaudioproducts,andwiththat,agreatdemandforimprovedaudiocomponents.Nosoonerhadtheconebecomeestablishedthanitwaschallengedbyproductsdevelopedduringthisnewrebirth.

In1947,ArthurJanszen,ayoungNavalengineer,tookpartinaresearchprojectfortheNavy.TheNavywasinterestedindevel-opingabetterinstrumentfortestingmicrophonearrays.Thetestinstrumentneededanextremelyaccuratespeaker,butJanszenfoundthattheconespeakersoftheperiodweretoononlinearinphaseandamplituderesponsetomeethiscriteria.Janszenbelievedthatelectrostatswereinherentlymorelinearthancones,sohebuiltamodelusingathinplasticdiaphragmtreatedwithaconductivecoating.ThismodelconfirmedJanszen’sbeliefs,foritexhibitedremarkablephaseandamplitudelinearity.

Asgoodasthesesystemswere,theywouldsoonbesurpassedbyanotherelectrostaticspeaker.

In1955,PeterWalkerpublishedthreearticlesregardingelectrostaticloudspeak-erdesign inWirelessWorld, aBritishmagazine.Inthesearticles,Walkerdem-onstratedthebenefitsoftheelectrostaticloudspeaker.Heexplainedthatelectro-staticspermittheuseofdiaphragmsthatare lowinmass, largeinareaanduni-formlydrivenovertheirsurfacesbyelectrostaticforces.Duetothesecharacteristics,electrostatshavetheinherentabilitytoproduceawidebandwidth,flatfrequencyresponsewithdistor-tionproductsbeingnogreaterthantheelectronicsdrivingthem.

By1956,Walkerbackeduphisarticlesbyintroducingacon-sumer product, the now famousQuad ESL. This speakerimmediatelysetastandardofperformancefortheaudioindus-tryduetoitsincredibleaccuracy.However,inactualuse,theQuadhadafewproblems.Itcouldnotbeplayedveryloud,ithadpoorbassperformance,itpresentedadifficultloadthatsomeamplifiersdidnotlike,itsdispersionwasverydirectionalanditspowerhandlingwaslimitedtoaround70watts.Asaresult,manypeoplecontinuedtouseboxspeakerswithcones.

Intheearly1960’sArthurJanszenjoinedforceswiththeKLHloud-speakercompany,andtogethertheyintroducedtheKLH9.DuetothelargesizeoftheKLH9,itdidnothaveasmanysoniclimitationsastheQuad.TheKLH9couldplaymarkedlylouderandlowerinfrequencythantheQuadESL.Thusarivalrywasborn.

Janszen continued to develop electrostatic designs. Hewas instrumental in thedesignof theKossModelOne, theAcoustechandtheDennesenspeakers.RogerWest,thechiefdesigneroftheJanszenCorporation,becamethepresidentofSoundLab.When JanszenCorporationwas sold, theRTRloudspeakercompanyboughthalfoftheproductiontooling.ThistoolingwasusedtomaketheelectrostaticpanelsfortheServostatic,ahybridelectrostaticsystemthatwasInfinity’sfirst

ElectrostaticspeakershaveprogressedandprosperedbecausetheyactuallydowhatPeterWalkerclaimedtheywould.Thelimitationsandproblemsexperienced in thepastwerenotinherenttotheelectrostaticconcept.Theywererelatedtotheapplicationsoftheseconcepts.

Today, these limitations have beenresolved. Advancements in materi-alsduetotheU.S.spaceprogramgivedesignerstheabilitytoharnessthesuperi-orityoftheelectrostaticprinciple.Today’selectrostatsuseadvancedinsulationtech-niquesorprovideprotectioncircuitry.Thepoordispersionpropertiesofearlymodelshavebeenaddressedbyusing

What is the advantage of ESL?
