Characteristics

The Emergency Flare Kit is reloadable and can be operated using onlyone hand; it fires 19 mm signal cartridges (Single Star "Red").

The device is provided with a lanyard by which it can be attached to alife saving jacket or a survival jacket.

The Emergency Flare Kit has been designed for use by mounteneers,boatsmen, private aviators etc., and it is intended to assist location byday and night of people in distress.

Design of the Emergency Flare Kit (Fig. 1)

The launcher consists of a grip-type receiver (1) which houses:

2 Safety3 Hammer4 Trigger5 Magazine catch

The magazine (6) is introduced into the launcher.

The safety is recessed into the grip-type receiver.

A spring arrests the safety lever in the positions"S" = Safe"F" = Fire

and prevents the safety from disengaging.

Design of the ammunition

The 19 mm signal cartridge OM 13 Single Star "Red" is fired from theEmergency Flare Kit and is employed for providing emergency signals.

Instructions for use

Hold the Emergency Flare Kit in your hand. Engage safety.

Introduce filled magazine into Emergency Flare Kit.

Cock the hammer with your thumb.

Aim the launcher in the desired signalling direction.

Firing position

Hold the launcher upward, with your arm extended; in this position,disengage the safety by moving the safety lever to "F" = Fire.

Squeeze the trigger with your index finger.

Caution:

1. When firing, beware of the ejected cartridge case.

2. The safety radius in the upward direction of ejection must be 6 ff(2 m).

Put the Emergency Flare Kit on safe by moving the safety lever to "S".

To fire additional flares, hold the launcher in the original firing position,re-cock the hammer and repeat the before-mentioned procedure.

After firing 5 flares, remove magazine from the launcher (safety on)by pressing the magazine catch lever forward.

Introduce filled spare magazine (safety on).

The Emergency Flare Kit is now ready to fire another 5 flares.

Procedure in the event of misfire

In the event of misfire, hold the launcher in firing position and engagethe safety. Re-cock the hammer, disengage the safety and squeezethe trigger.

Should the misfire occur again, hold the launcher in firing position andengage the safety; hold the launcher in this position for one minute.Now remove the magazine and take out the cartridge that failed to fire.

Re-insert magazine into the launcher and hold launcher in the originalfiring position.

(Then proceed as described on page 8.)

Filling and emptying the magazine

To fill the magazine, insert the signal cartridge all the way into themagazine from the front, beneath the magazine lip.

Insert the second to fifth cartridge beneath the magazine lip, whilepressing down the uppermost cartridge in the magazine.

The cartridge indicators on the left side of the magazine show thenumber of rounds contained in the magazine.

Care and maintenance

As a result of the fouling caused by the ammunition, the EmergencyFlare Kit and the magazine must be cleaned after not more than 50rounds have been fired.

Cleaning the launcher

Remove magazine from the launcher.Wash out launcher in water (do not use sea water).Clean magazine well and firing port.Shake water from launcher and let dry.Lightly oil moving parts of the trigger and safety mechanisms as wellas magazine catch with gun oil.

Cleaning the magazine

Depress locking pin (3) on floor plate (4). Remove floor plate, makingsure that the spring base and follower spring (2) do not snap out of themagazine housing (1).

Remove spring base, follower spring and follower (5).

Clean magazine housing and components with water.

Before re-assembling the magazine again, shake water from individualcomponents and let dry.

Oil magazine housing and components lightly with gun oil.

Assemble the magazine in the reverse sequence.
