• Aims to enable information and communication in the forest sector, providing facilities for thesearch, online access and analysis of all kinds of forest related information
• Supports harmonization and comparability of data from diverse sources• Focus in interoperability, i.e. to enable EFICP to exchange data with a wide range of external
systems and services, adopting INSPIRE guidelines and rules.

EFFIS – Current status
• The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) has been established by the Joint Research Centre(JRC) and the Directorate General for Environment (DG ENV) of the European Commission (EC).
• It supports the services in charge of the protection of forests against fires in EU and neighbor countries, and provides the EC services and the European Parliament with information on forest fires in Europe.
• Aims to provide up-to-date, reliable, and harmonized information on forest fires at the European level, providing EU level assessments during both pre-fire and post-fire phases, thus supporting fire prevention, preparedness, fire fighting and post-fire evaluations.

EFFIS 27
ICT in the service of prevention and protection of the citizen and the ecosystems from fires. Evaluation and Prospects. Athens, 05.05.2008
• The Commission is implementing the pilot project "forest protection and conservation“• Follows the European Parliament Resolution of May 2006• Adopted in the 2007 budget, to be implemented by DG ENV & JRC.• Focus on the further development of the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS)• Budget of 3 million EUR and duration of 40 months,• Includes the development of the following modules:
1. - EFFIS rapid damage assessment – further development of the existing system;2. - Fuel map of Europe;3. - Forest fire emissions and dispersion modeling;4. - Economic and social impacts of forest fires;5. - Forest fire causes determination and harmonization.
EFFIS foreseen improvements
EFFIS 28
ICT in the service of prevention and protection of the citizen and the ecosystems from fires. Evaluation and Prospects. Athens, 05.05.2008
• Need to continue working on harmonization of definitions• Need to establish European networks for data collection on the basis of
national networks• Need to work on harmonization of data and metadata towards compiling
European datasets• Need to work on Interoperability of systems towards decentralized systems
(data close to data producers)• Need to establish centralized repositories of EU datasets, which pave the way
towards a Shared Environmental Information System.
