Today's new builds are designed for maximum efficiency. Above all, this means using systems that obtain energy from the environment. Not only heat, but also power, to achieve the greatest possible level of independence from the public grid.

At work 16The ideal working environment is also dependent on pleasant room temperatures. Many renewable heating solutions are possible, using energy from the ambient air, groundwater or the ground.

    Production 24

In production plants and commercial enterprises, energy is required in all of its various forms – as hot water, steam and also, of course, electricity. Viessmann offers efficient, powerful technology for all applications.

    Hospitals 28

High cost pressures, and the need for a continual supply of energy, mean that particularly efficient solutions are required in the healthcare sector. Modernising a heating system can significantly reduce the energy demand and energy costs.

    Public and leisure facilities 32

Public buildings for cultural and leisure activities have different requirements for heat provision. Whilst one may need large volumes of hot water for its spa areas, another requires low temperatures for the preservation of cultural artefacts.

    Retail and tourism 38

Shopping centres and retail businesses require relatively little hot water, but their customers expect pleasant temperatures and good ventilation. In hotels, on the other hand, a convenient hot water supply plays an important role.

    Local authorities 44

Rural areas are best placed to take advantage of renewable energy generation. A local heating network can supply all of the households in a bioenergy village efficiently and cheaply with heat and power from renewable sources.

    The company 48

Viessmann is one of the world's leading manufacturers of efficient systems for heat, cooling, steam and decentralised power generation. As a third generation family run business, the company has been supplying heating systems with low emissions for many decades.

A light and airy detached house on the north shore of Lake Constance with direct access to the water and a view of the Swiss Alps, the "House by the Lake" in Langenargen is not only architecturally unique, but also very well equipped for the future thanks to considerable foresight in its design.

Highly convenient heatingThe "House by the Lake" is a KfW Efficiency House 55 and features a ground source heat pump that draws its energy from a 15-metre deep groundwater well in the garden.

The heat generator is operated with solar power produced on site by the Vitovolt photovoltaic modules on the south facing side of the roof. If no heat is currently required, it is transferred to the heating water buffer cylinder. An additional DHW cylinder ensures high DHW convenience.

Electric charging point in the carport The photovoltaic modules also supply power for the lights and household appliances. Furthermore, the solar power is used to charge the electric car in the carport. A Vitocharge power storage system was installed to provide the greatest possible level of independence from mains power. It is charged with surplus power and discharged again whenever the occupants require more electricity – for example in the evenings.

  • This Kampa prefabricated house is equipped with a photovoltaic system and a Vitocharge power storage unit. The Vitovolt photovoltaic modules and the capacity of the power storage unit are matched to the average consumption of the household and the power storage unit is charged with any surplus power.

Heat pump operated by solar powerEnergy efficient technology from Viessmann is also called upon to provide heating and a convenient DHW supply. The house is equipped with a Vitocal 200-S split heat pump that extracts thermal energy from the ambient air and compresses it to a higher temperature level.

The electricity required to run the heat pump is also generated by solar power.

Positive results for energy generation and the environmentIn total, the house generates more energy than it consumes overall for heating, hot water, ventilation, domestic appliances and lighting. As power is generated on site through the use of renewables, CO2 emissions are avoided which helps to protect the environment.

The Apartimentum in the Rotherbaum quarter of Hamburg promises the ultimate in convenient living. Set over four floors, 42 apartments measuring 75 to 230 m2 provide exceptional amenities to meet every conceivable requirement. Working together with renowned firms from the construction industry, building services sector and the IT industry, the owner has created a smart home that is second to none. The heating system, lights, domestic appliances, home electronics and roller shutters are all controlled by app.

Innovative energy systems from ViessmannViessmann is always seeking ways to drive technology forward. The company's innovative energy systems were deployed to produce heat, cool the rooms in summer and generate the power required in the apartments. To achieve this, two Vitocal 300-G ground source heat pumps, an ice store system and a Vitobloc 200 EM-6/15 CHP unit were installed. The CHP unit, with 6 kW electrical output and

15 kW thermal output, functions as a power generating heating system. In addition, the compact unit makes use of the energy contained in the waste heat and supplies it to the heating circuit via a heat exchanger. The power is used for all of the consumers in the building, which makes the occupants less dependent on power drawn from the public grid.

A Vitocrossal 200 gas condensing boiler was installed to cover peak loads, and therefore provides the additional heat required on especially cold days.

  • With their passion for innovative projects and solutions, the owners of this detached house modernised their heating system with a great deal of foresight, investing in a Vitotwin 300-W micro CHP unit, a photovoltaic system and an electric car. Their goal was to become as independent as possible of power from the public grid. After attending trade fairs and seminars, they were won over by the quality and performance data of Viessmann products.

Targets exceededConsiderable savings were achieved from the very first year: gas consumption fell by 21 percent compared to the old heating system.

Power production exceeded annual demand by eight percent. With the electric car, 52 percent of the power generated on site could be used directly. With the aid of a

Vitocharge power storage system, the power generated on site can be used even more efficiently.

In total, costs for gas, electricity and fuel, as well as CO2 emissions, have been halved. Based on these values, the additional costs will pay for themselves within six years.

The heating system in this two-family house, with a 280 m2 heating area and a DHW requirement for 6 people, was completely upgraded. Outdated solar collectors were replaced with three Vitosol 300-T vacuum tube collectors. At the same time, the old boiler was exchanged for a Vitoladens 300-W wall mounted oil condensing boiler and a 950 litre Vitocell 360-M heating water buffer

Italy's first Passive House Plus requires no more than 45 kWh of renewable primary energy per square metre per year. Furthermore, it generates at least 60 kWh/m² of energy per year. Part of the heat demand is met by heat radiated from electrical appliances and lights, as well as solar radiation.

A Vitocal 222-S air source heat pump was installed for central and DHW heating. Thanks to the high efficiency of all the appliances in the house and the energy saving LED lights, the photovoltaic system provides more power than is actually consumed in the building.

As part of the energy efficient renovation of this apartment building, an energy concept was put into place that uses only renewable energy sources. The annual requirement for heating energy is met by an ice store system with solar/air absorbers integrated into the facade. These absorb both solar energy and energy from the ambient air. The energy gained is fed into the ice store. As the colder months approach, the stored energy is extracted from the store and supplied to two Vitocal 300-G heat pumps arranged in a master/slave configuration. Power comes from photovoltaic modules and a small wind power system on the roof.

Right from the start, the Blauhaus was designed to achieve the highest possible levels of energy efficiency. This was made possible by the close collaboration between the developer NEW mobil and aktiv Mönchengladbach GmbH and the Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, who all use the building. Together with Viessmann, NEW mobil created a model energy centre to share theoretical and practical knowledge. It offers students and trade specialists the chance to test and evaluate various types of energy generation.

The Blauhaus is, in effect, a zero emissions house which independently gains sufficient energy to cover its annual demand of around 193,000 kW for heating, cooling, light and ventilation. Overall, it is self-sufficient with regard to the public grid. An ice store measuring 175 m3 is at the heart of the energy system, from which the Vitocal 300-G Pro ground source heat pump extracts heat until controlled ice formation takes place at 0 °C. The power required in the building is generated by 307 photovoltaic modules and the Vitobloc 200 CHP unit. This saves 110 tonnes of CO2 per year which would otherwise be produced.

CHP unit and condensing boiler for peak loadsIf the heating output of the Vitocal 300-G Pro and ice store system becomes insufficient during a cold winter, a Vitobloc 200 EM-6/15 CHP unit and a Vitodens 200-W gas condensing boiler can be started up to provide additional heat. An adsorption refrigeration unit is also run using the heat generated by these appliances.

  • The main company offices of leitec® Gebäudetechnik GmbH are heated using an ice store system with a capacity of 400,000 litres. Thermal energy gained by the air absorber system is fed to the ice store via two heat exchangers, and is extracted again by heat pumps on demand.

In winter, the system uses the energy in the water as it changes state from liquid to solid. During the summer months, the ice can be used to provide cooling for the building.

Heat pump cascade for high outputTwo Vitocal 300-G ground source heat pumps are connected to one another as a two stage cascade following the master/slave principle. Their combined output is 64 kW. The photovoltaic system generates all of the power required to operate the heat pumps.

Below the photovoltaic modules, a solar/air absorber system, with a total length of 2000 metres, is installed. At outside temperatures above 3 °C, it absorbs thermal energy from the ambient air and supplies this to the heat pumps as primary energy and to the ice store for regeneration. The absorber system generates 50,000 kWh per year.

At 22 metres tall, the seven storeys of the K8 building innovation centre on the Kampa head office grounds fall just outside the definition of a high rise building. The unusual thing is that the centre is built entirely of wood. Even the stairwell and lift shaft are constructed from this natural resource.

The design of the K8, with more than 3000 m2

of usable floor area, complies with the KfW 40 standard. In addition to the outstanding energy efficiency of the building envelope, solar energy captured by the south facing glass facade, plus a heat recovery system, reduce the heat demand to a minimum.

Using renewables with technology from ViessmannA renewable energy system was installed to provide additional energy for central and

DHW heating. This includes an ice store with a volume of 685 m3, three Vitocal 300-G heat pumps with a total output of 119 kW, 186 m2 of solar/air absorbers in the form of a fence, and a photovoltaic system.

Largely independent of external energyThe systems used make the K8 almost completely self-sufficient with regard to external energy:

The heat pumps make use of the energy released by the ice store during the transition from water to ice, and compress it to a flow temperature of up to 65 °C. The solar/air absorbers extract thermal energy from the air and feed this to the heat pumps as well. In turn, the heat pumps can be operated at virtually no cost using photovoltaic power generated on site.

  • Its proximity to the immense Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine provides the Erftverband non-profit environmental organisation with the opportunity to utilise the thermal energy contained in the groundwater for heating purposes. This water, referred to as mine drainage water, is pumped from depths as low as 500 metres to keep the mine dry.

Heating energy from mine drainage waterThis water in fact has a temperature of up to 26 °C and therefore contains enough energy for extraction by heat exchangers.

To bring this about, Viessmann, together with partner company Jaske & Wolf GmbH, was able to supply an energy system which is the only one of its kind in the world to date. Through the use of self-cleaning tubular heat exchangers, it is possible to cool the water to almost 16 °C. Two Vitocal 350-G Pro heat pumps then raise it to the necessary flow temperature which lies between 55 and 60 °C.

Reliable and economicalThe Erftverband invested around €650,000 in this efficient and environmentally responsible technology. Depending on the heat demand in their buildings, up to 70 m3 of mine drainage water is cooled by the two heat exchangers every hour. This enables the system to achieve its total output of 620 kW. With an overall annual demand of 1200 MWh, the Erftverband saves approximately €58,000 on heating costs.

The head office of the German Association of Machinery Rings in Neuburg/Donau, where 130 staff work, is an impressive example of efficient construction. Around 4000 m2 of usable floor area was built in accordance with the KfW 70 standard. Energy is provided by a biomass boiler and a photovoltaic system. The PV system also provides some of the power for the building.

Renewable heating systemA heat pump system was originally planned for DHW heating. However, the altitude of the plot proved too high – extremely complex drilling operations would have been necessary to be able to make use of any groundwater.

The final decision was therefore made in favour of a Vitoflex 300-RF biomass boiler from Viessmann. Two buffer cylinders with a

total capacity of 5800 litres were installed to ensure a convenient supply of heating energy and domestic hot water. Fully automatic solid fuel boilerThe Vitoflex 300-RF is an automatic solid fuel boiler that can be operated – depending on the version – with pellets, woodchips or shavings with a maximum moisture content of 35 percent.

Committed to the environmentProtection of nature and the environment goes without saying for those who work at the Association of Machinery Rings: a green "wall" of moss and lichen in the entrance hall is a reminder to look after plantlife carefully, and help them grow and flourish. The CO2 neutral energy system makes a valuable contribution to this goal.

Two Vitobloc 200 CHP units, operated with biogas and installed on the roof of this skyscraper, supply around 60 percent of the building's power demand with their electrical output of 1600 kW. The heat that is generated at the same time covers around 90 percent of the base heat load for central heating, the ventilation systems and the hot water supply. When additional heat is required, for example when temperatures are very low, gas condensing boilers are on hand for peak loads. A 90 m2 solar thermal system equipped with Vitosol 200-F flat-plate collectors delivers around ten percent of the energy required for heating DHW.

Each CHP unit provides 238 kW

of electrical output and 363 kW

    of thermal output.

German Federal Environment Agency (UBA), Dessau

Five Vitobloc 200 EM-238/363 are to be found in the energy centre of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) building. They provide heat to run absorption refrigeration units and the central heating system. If required, the Vitoplex 300 low temperature oil boiler supplies additional heat.

An adsorption refrigeration system that generates cooling energy from heat was installed to condition the municipal building. Highly efficient Vitosol 200-T vacuum tube collectors deliver the heat required for this process. A total of 115 collectors with an absorber area of 3 m2 each are mounted on the flat roof.

A special feature of this system is that the collectors provide most heat in high summer when lots of energy is required for cooling.

The electricity produced as part of the combined heat and power generation process also covers the power demand from the IT centre and other consumers in the building. With an annual operating time in excess of 7000 hours, the CHP unit is highly economical, and it offers rapid amortisation as a result of savings in bills for fossil fuel and electricity.

The new production and administrative building that is home to Leica Camera AG is wholly focused on efficiency. The entire complex is supplied with heating and cooling by an ultra-modern energy system.

CHP unit with mains substitution modeTwo Vitobloc 200 CHP units with 238 kWel/363 kWth and 140 kWel/207 kWth respectively were installed to generate the power required on site. The heat generated by the process covers the heat demand in the building as well as the operation of an absorption refrigeration unit. Should the mains power fail, the CHP units will temporarily take over the entire power supply, thereby safeguarding continued production.

A Vitocrossal 200 gas condensing boilerwith 503 kW switches on in addition if the heat generated by the CHP units is insufficient.

Furthermore, a Viessmann ground source heat pump was installed to provide cooling. The heat pump draws its energy from an array of 80 geothermal probes sunk 120 metres into the ground. Two air cooled refrigeration units cover peak loads at times of high cooling demand.

Continuous heat transferAll system components are perfectly matched, ensuring particularly efficient and economical operation. As part of this, the CHP units are designed to run for as long as possible. The heat generated as they do so is used continuously.

Through the use of an absorption refrigeration unit, energy for cooling can be generated from heat. The priorities in this process are to supply the cold water required for production and utilise the waste heat generated by the CHP units. In standard operation, the waste heat is stored in a heating water buffer cylinder and consumed as required.

Absolute accuracy in the processing of paper and cardboard places high demands on manufacturing equipment – especially when the task is to produce up to 35,000 jigsaws per day, as is the case for Ravensburger Spieleverlag. The temperature and relative humidity in the production halls is also important. Fluctuations have an impact on quality, as the cardboard can become warped.

Steam for producing jigsawsThese exact requirements were taken into account when designing the new energy system. To replace the previous system, which had been in place for 36 years, a Vitoplex 200 low temperature gas boiler with condensing technology was installed, which meets the entire heat demand of the company with its output of 1100 kW. A Vitoplex 100-LS steam boiler with an output of 2.2 t/h is used to evenly air condition the factory where the sensitive base cardboard for the jigsaw puzzles is processed.

The steam boiler with feedwater tank, including full deaerator, condensate tankand steam lance, were all supplied by Viessmann.

Replaced in the shortest possible timeThe replacement of the old system with the new boiler was completed in a very short time during the factory shutdown in the summer.

Prepared for expansionPossible subsequent expansion of the system was factored in at the design stage, with a control unit that could regulate a cascade. Operation using touch panels is described by the user as simple and convenient.

Constantly rising energy costs led the technical managers of the Pirmasens Municipal Hospital to think about short term ways of saving energy. Until this point, heat and power had been provided by public utility companies.

A containerised system provides the solutionThe solution that the design engineers came up with consisted of a container with two Vitobloc 200 CHP units for natural gas operation. The fully preassembled technology was supplied in its entirety by Viessmann. All that remained to be connected were the cables, pipe and ducts for the supply and extract air, gas, electricity and district heat. The containerised system was engineered and delivered in just four months.

Payback after three years A payback period of three years was calculated for the containerised system. With their output of 2.1 GWh, the two CHP units deploy cogeneration technology to generate around 40 percent of the power required in the hospital. The heat continually produced in this process is returned to the district heating network of Stadtwerke Pirmasens, the utility company, and credited to the hospital accordingly.

The two CHP units cover the base load of heat required. At low outside temperatures, the hot water boilers start up as well. The power generated at the same time by the CHP units is used by the hospital itself and provides around 40 percent of the energy required.

The "Badeparadies Schwarzwald" leisure park has a heat demand of 13,000 MWh. To meet this, a Vitobloc 200 CHP unit supplies the base load all year round. At around 8000 operating hours, its main job is to generate power for the leisure park itself. The simultaneously generated heat is used for central heating and DHW, resulting in an energy utilisation level of over 90 percent for this CHP system. In the summer, the CHP unit becomes the sole provider of power and heat.

Independence from fossil fuelsThe main provider of heat in winter is a Vitoflex 300-UF woodchip system that supplies around 60 percent of the heating energy. The operators deliberately chose wood as their fuel type, as this makes them less dependent on fossil fuels. Two Vitoplex 300 low temperature boilers spring into action if there is a higher demand.

CO2 neutral operationThe plant room only expels flue gas and conditioned water vapour from its chimney, as the flue gas is cleaned using advanced depluming systems. This enables compliance with statutory limits without difficulty. The concept in place at this leisure park is advantageous in that it makes efficient use of energy and employs wood as a regenerative fuel. This allows CO2 neutral heat generation, as the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere is balanced out by the amount that the wood absorbed during its lifetime.

At the heart of the citadel stands the Peter and Paul Cathedral, which was designed for the interment of the Tsars. With the exception of Nicholas II, all of the Russian emperors were laid to rest here.

By the mid-18th century, the palaces and approximately 1000 hectares of parkland were considered almost as splendid and ornate as Versailles.

Heating systems from Viessmann now ensure a reliable supply of heat to the Peter and Paul Fortress and to the Peterhof Palace. A Vitocal 300-G two-stage ground source heat pump provides central and DHW heating by extracting geothermal energy via four probes extending 98 metres into the ground. Two Vitocell 140-E heating water buffer cylinders, each with a capacity of 1000 litres, are located in the plant room. Both of these cylinders are supplied by a solar thermal system consisting of five Vitosol 200-T vacuum tube collectors.

Solar DHW heating and central heating backupThe solar thermal system serves primarily to heat DHW, and in winter, also provides central heating backup. If the solar yields are too low, central heating backup is assured by the heat pump. In summer, the rooms can also be cooled using the natural cooling function of the heat pumps.

Decentralised freshwater modules supply DHW for the sanitary facilities. An underfloor

heating system provides a pleasant level of heat on the ground floor, whilst panel radiators are installed on the upper floor.

Self-sufficient power supplyA photovoltaic system with a total module area of 344 m2 and an output of 49 kWp provides all of the power that the building needs. After the first twelve months of operation and data recording, a consumption level was attained that was more than ten percent below the simulated forecasts.

The current yield from the photovoltaic system exceeds the predicted result by 20 percent. The 13,600 kWh of surplus power generated in the first year was exported to the public grid. The annual emissions statement is also extremely positive: 50 tonnes of CO2 are saved per year – nine tonnes more than previously calculated.

Thousands of litres of groundwater collect daily in this labyrinthine system of shafts and tunnels. In order to keep the visitor mine and the visitor area water-free at a depth of 150 m, about 60 m³/h of pit water must be pumped out continuously. At 13 °C, this water has a high thermal energy potential which means it can be put to good use as part of a geothermal system. And that is exactly what has been done, as the entire plant is heated with two ground source heat pumps from

When renovating their 220-room building in Esopus, New York, the Bruderhof religious community decided exclusively on Viessmann biomass boilers. As part of the modernisation project, the old oil tanks gave way to a store room for woodchips. DHW heating, as well as central heating in spring and autumn, is now taken care of by a Vitoflex 300-UF solid fuel boiler with an output of 530 kW. A Vitoflex 300-UF with 1250 kW is used solely in the winter months.

The woodchips are produced by the operators themselves, for which a professional shredding machine was acquired specially. This has also been of benefit to local landscape gardeners, who used to have to pay to have their cuttings taken away. In the bioenergy village of Wettesingen near Kassel, approximately 200 homes receive their entire heat supply from renewables. The technology used comes from Viessmann's comprehensive product range. An existing biogas plant was supplemented with a CHP unit and three wood combustion systems, as well as a low temperature gas boiler with biogas burner for peak loads. The overall thermal output is approximately 2600 kW, while the electrical output is 900 kW.

30 percent reduction in heating billsThe price for heating in the Wettesingen bioenergy village is based on all investment and running costs. Compared to the costs for individual heating systems that use fuel oil, the community's heat supply is now around 30 percent cheaper. Since the price of oil and gas can be expected to continue to rise, the price benefit will become even greater in future.

As part of ongoing expansion plans, the system was supplemented with a containerised heating system, including a Vitoplex 200 low temperature boiler that burns biogas. The Vitoflex 300-SRT biomass boiler stands out on account of its high fuel flexibility. Wood with a moisture content of up to M60 can be combusted reliably and cleanly. The boiler's modulating operating mode matches the system output to the actual heat demand. If required, a Vitomax 200-LW peak load boiler can be started up as well.

The aim is to generate energy exclusively with sustainable fuelThe business was founded in 2009 in order to build a combined heat and power station in Gräfelfing, Bavaria, fired exclusively with

woodchips. Local businesses and an energy supply utility are partners to this enterprise.

With its capacity of 400 m3, the woodchip store has been sized so that it needs to be topped up in standard operation just once every week. The pushrod discharge transports the biomass automatically via a conveyor into the boiler, where the woodchips are burned at around 950 °C, leaving hardly any residue.

Not far from the city centre, Stadtwerke Mengen has constructed a multi mode CHP station which is primarily operated with biomass. The woodchips for the Vitoflex 300-FSB with an output of 900 kW are mainly sourced from forestry owned by the parish itself. The fine dust particles in the flue gas are reduced to a minimum by the integral electrostatic filter.

To cover peak loads, and to create redundancy, two Vitoplex 200 low temperature gas boilers were installed with 1100 and 1600 kW output respectively.

A Vitobloc 200 EM-140/207 CHP unit with condensing technology serves as an additional energy source. Its waste heat, which is generated continuously, is also fed into the local heating network. The generated power is exported to the public grid.

In summer, the thermal output of 207 kW is sufficient to supply heat to the 150 connected homes and businesses, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, and numerous municipal buildings.

A heating water buffer cylinder with 53,000 litres then stores surplus heat and makes it available as required.
