Social Media
Social media includes web-based and mobile technologies used to
turn communication into interactive dialogue. Andreas Kaplan and
Michael Haenlein2010) define social media as a group of
Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and
technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the
creation and exchange of user-generated content. Social media is
media for social interaction as a super-set beyond social
communication. Enabled by ubiquitously accessible and scalable
communication techniques, social media has substantially changed
the way organizations, communities, and individuals communicate.
Social Media become a diverse tool and can be accessed by
anyone. One person can post or share information and share it
with hundreds, even thousands, of people across the world in a
matter of seconds.
This new phenomenon has changed the way that people share
information. In the past, when someone wanted to share something
with a large audience, a person had to enlist a newspaper,
television or radio station, or access an email list server in
order to reach those people. Now, with the emergence of social
media, the same information can be shared in a matter of
seconds.

Social Media
Iphone 3G, Web 2.0 was made available to Mobile devices
specially Smart Phones nowadays. They also made third-party
developers to create new applications that came in many forms,
from games to productivity enhancements to social networking
tools. It brings internet to mobile device, creating new
interesting ways to connect, converse, and build relationships.
Because of all this advances, web 1.0 known as the
blogosphere fades and welcomes the web 2.0 as statusphere. While
there are still interest in blogs, the sharing of opinions, and
the desire to participate in online conversations, context
creation is moving away from What I think to what is
happening right now.
Mike Volpe, VP Marketing, Hubspot(2010), said that Social
media is like water, units own, water dies some cool things, but
when combined with other compounds, it enabled the evaluation of
all forms of life. Social media unit own is nice but when
combined with other tools, it it=s enabling everything to
evolve, from communications to business to politics to
marketing.

Social Media
Social media describes the online technologies and
practices that people use to share opinions, insights,
experiences, and perspectives with each other. David Bowen
(2010), States that Social media are all about to shift from
vertical to horizontal communications on the WEB. Several
categories if social media exist. Blogs are now a mainstream
application, and social networks such as MySpace, Facebook, and
YouTube have become a major presence in todays world as more
social network sites are created almost daily.
The rise of Twitter, podcasts, and wikis has facilitated
conversation among people around the world. This social media
conversation is not organized, not controlled, and not on
message. Instead, the conversation has the characteristics of
being vibrant, emergent, fan, compelling, and full of chance
insights. Some experts gave called social networks the worlds
largest focus group. Collectively, the social media including
blogs, social networks, RSS feeds, podcasts, wikis, reviews,
bulletin boards, and newsgroups have the power to support or
destroy a brand or reputation. They say a key to a more better
and sufficient social media is transparency, but it is all
risky.

Common Kinds of Social Media
Blogging
Blogs, which first came on the scene 1998, have now become
mainstream media in terms of both their numbers and scope of
their influence. In the beginning, they were called weblogs,
reflecting their roots as websites maintained by individuals who
wanted to post their commentary and opinions on various topics.
Today, the abbreviated term blog is commonly used to identify
these free-form sites. Although the vast majority of blogs are
stull primarily the province of individuals who post their
personal opinions, blogging is now widely recognized by public
relations personnel as an extremely cost-effective way to reach
large numbers of people.
Podcasting
One of the first broadcasting in internet is Podcasting. It
was like a newspaper online. It was called the Guardian
newspaper in 2004. The term Podcasting is a combination of
Personal on Demand (PoD) and the word broadcasting. It is a
digital recording of a radio or TV program that is made
available to internet and to be free to download and listen or
watch to the downloaders personal computer.

Chatting
Chatting refers to any kind of communication over
the Internet, that offers an instantaneous transmission of text-
based messages from sender to receiver, hence the delay for
visual access to the sent message shall not hamper the flow of
communications in any of the directions. Online chat may address
as well point-to-point communications as well as multicast
communications from one sender to many receivers. Although there
has been much criticism about what online chatting has done in
todays society. Many peopleare accusing it of replacing proper
English with short hand with an almost completely new hybrid
language.
Social Networking Sites
Millions of nline users are drawn to Social Networking
Sites as a means of keeping in touch with existing friends and
family and building a network of new friends based on shared
interests and other commonalities such as politics, religion,
hobbies, and activities. Although social networking sites hit
their stride in the late-2000. They have been in existence since
the late 90s.

Wikis
Ward Cunningham (2004), the man behind the very first wiki,
described it as "the simplest online database that could
possibly work." But, while this sounds good rolling off the
tongue, it is not very descriptive, and to be honest, not
entirely accurate. This only provides information to a certain
topic with a certain wiki. For example, you are addicted to a
game and you want to know more information about it so you
search the Google for a wiki of the game you want. On the wiki
they provide the users to have the information they need and the
power to publish, edit, and comment specific information.
The Effects of the Social Media
Social media affects the lifestyle of people. It changes
the way we communicate, the way we share memories with each
other. Social media gives us the advantage to be keep in touch
or to be gone in many places of the world without living your
common place. We could now relate to different people with
different cultures, see photos, stories, and be amaze to see
what it was like to the other side of the world.
These are positive influences linked to social networking

Social Media
Young adults who spend more time on Facebook are better atshowing virtual empathy to their online friends.
Online social networking can help introverted adolescents learnhow to socialize behind the safety of various screens, ranging
from a two-inch smartphone to a 17-inch laptop.
Social networking can provide tools for teaching in compellingways that engage young students.
Social networking sites and the applications which link the
two together can also enhance freedom and mobility. They offer
the ability to access information and communicate with others at
any time and in any place and regardless of the physical
location of other people. People can maintain a constant
connection with existing friends and family who might live in
different countries, or they can form new relationships with
other nationalities, regardless of real time or separate
locations. Social networking sites also offer the chance of
communication in cases where mobility is often a hindrance to
social interaction. Elderly people and those with physical
disabilities who have an inability to leave their house are able
to stay in touch with existing relations and friends,
By forming groups of people with similar interests
(particularly if the interest or hobby is not mainstream),
social networking sites can create a sense of unity and

belonging in people who might have previously felt alienated in
society because of an inability to relate to local people.
Particularly in areas with smaller populations, the chance of
discovering others with similar interests is infrequent but by
removing these location barriers through online communication,
the chance of meeting people with the same interests is greatly
increased. Social networking sites give the impression that it
is a much smaller world.
The social media the Internet increase an overall awareness
of the masses. They enhance the general knowledge by providing
us with information from all over the world. News broadcast
through different media helps us know about the day-to-day
events in the world. News, tele-films and documentaries
revolving around social issues increase a social awareness in
children and develop their concern towards society. Media serve
as the best means for a speedy spread of news about important
incidents or events taking place. What has happened in the
remotest corner of the world can reach us within minutes, thanks
to media. The speed that technology has achieved is helpful in
times of crisis when media is to be used for reporting news
needing immediate attention. Research has revealed that media is
responsible for influencing a major part of our daily life.
Media contribute to a transformation in the cultural and social

values of the masses. Media can bring about a change in the
attitudes and beliefs of the common man. The persuasive nature
of the content presented over media influences the thoughts and
behavior of the general public. Media has a direct impact over
the lifestyle of society.
The recent advent of blogging in the media world and
practices like public polls and citizen journalism, have led to
the achievement of a social control. These concepts have
strengthened the relationship between the media and the common
man. They have brought the general masses closer to their
society. Media has brought about a major transformation in the
way people think. Media has given them an excellent platform to
present themselves before the world and contribute in their own
way to the changing world scenario. Media has been responsible
for making the world a smaller place to live.
McGilvray (2009), states that Especially the days that you
feel down in real social situations like school and things like
that. You go home and you go into Livewire and theres people to
talk to and it makes your day that much better With online
social networking reducing difficulties with limited mobility,
time and distance barriers and unacceptance due to stereotyping.

Social Media
Another benefit to communicating through social networking
sites is the promotion of education and news. People can share
information via links, reviews and applications. They may source
this information from other places and share them with others or
provide their own information for education, updates of news or
support. Many educational institutions encourage learning via
the Internet and social networking sites because it allows an
easy communication channel for students to learn and share
skills.
Summary
For all the benefits of social networking sites in todays
society, it is evident that any impact they have is due to not
merely the sites themselves but thecommunications layer
embedded within them (Young, 2006). It has been said that
social networking would be both the downfall of mankind, and the
thing that would bring the planet together but the truth is that
social networking, while great in many respects, does not fulfil
a fundamental human desire: To be in the actual presence of
other people. However, as an extension of offline communication,
the use of social networking sites is incredibly advantageous to
society. It simply must be remembered that without the basic
existence of and need for interpersonal relationships and

communicating with other people, social networking sites would
be extraneous and insignificant.
