OBESITY AMONG CHILDREN
Results from the 2007–2008 NHANES, using measured heights and weights, indicate that an estimated 16.9% of children and adolescents aged 2–19 years are obese.
Using the definition of obesity as a BMI of 30+, 26 percent of all adult women are obese, while 20.6 percent of adult men are obese.
DIABETES AMONG CHILDREN DIABETES AMONG ADULTS
The epidemics of obesity and the low level of physical activity among young people, as well as exposure to diabetes in utero, may be major contributors to the increase in type 2 diabetes during childhood and adolescence.
The prevalence of diabetes among adults has
increased significantly from 5.1% in 1988-1994
to 6.5% in 1999-2002 in the United States.1
