Ma`n bin Yazid bin Akhnas (May Allah be

pleased with them) (he, his father and his

grandfather, all were Companions) reported:

My father set aside some dinars for charity and

gave them to a man in the mosque. I went to

that man and took back those dinars. He said: “I

had not intended you to be given.’’ So we went

to Messenger of Allah (PBUH), and put forth

the matter before him. He said to my father,

“Yazid, you have been rewarded for what you

intended.’’ And he said to me, “Ma`n, you are

entitled to what you have taken.’’

Muslims all around the world once again completed the most virtuous form of worship the Hajj or Pilgrimage this year. Muslims were honored to become the Guests of Allah in His Holy House the Kaaba and through Divine Guidance have completed the rituals of Hajj with great love and enthusiasm for Almighty Allah. In hadith, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that: “Whoever performs Hajj for the Pleasure of Allah and therein utters no word of evil, nor commits any evil deed, shall return from it (free from sin) as the day on which his mother gave birth to him.” (Bukhari)

The one who performed Hajj with love and enthusiasm will get a reward of Jannah as stated in hadith: “Verily there shall be no reward for a Mabroor (accepted) Hajj except Jannah”

(Muslim). As Hajj is over and pilgrims are coming back to their homes, back to the reality of family life, work, and other normal life responsibilities. Even though Hajj is over, pilgrims return home to their loved ones, not only with many precious memories but also with lots of lessons learned from the spiritual journey of Hajj and a sense of noble spirituality. These lessons and sense of noble spirituality should remain with pilgrims throughout their lifetime and they have to apply these lessons for the rest of their lives.

Maintain Your Hajj High

Pilgrims should maintain their Hajj High but it is difficult for most of the people due to their involvement in normal life routine as earlier before Hajj. One should remain on the straight path

and on a higher level with the right intentions, sincere Duas, and dedicated efforts, even if that level isn’t quite as grand as what you’d hoped for. Below we will discuss some points by following which one can maintain his/her Hajj high for the rest of life.

Pilgrims should remain realistic in worship even though they could not maintain the same levels of worship that they had on the Hajj journey. But if you need to keep a few small and manageable ones then do them sincerely and consistently for the sake of Almighty Allah.

The most important thing that one should maintain after Hajj is the issue of steadfastness and guarding this great deed i.e. performance of Hajj against

things that could nullify it. You should ask Allah Almighty ceaselessly to help you adhere firmly to His religion and guide you to obey Him, and make you avoid His disobedience.

After being totally purified on Arafah, your clean soul recognizes your new sins and mistakes much more easily. But you won’t stay that pure forever and Allah doesn’t expect you to remain that way. All of the mankind sins, but the best of those who sin are those who repent and return to Allah. Even when you don’t recognize sins, make a habit of daily Istighfar so that you can seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty.

Remember the spiritual significance of pelting the Jamaraat. After shaytan was humiliated on the day of Arafah, he’s even more determined to corrupt you. So, just as you stoned Shaytan in those days, whenever you notice his temptations coming to you back home, repeat that pelting in your mind just like you chased him away on Mina, and you can do it again now too.

Protect your senses from spiritual filth by staying away from sights and sounds that would corrupt your heart, and if you do see or hear them, immediately try to erase their effects by replacing those experiences with something better. Recite or listen to the Quran immediately and let the wrong thoughts or sight be pushed out of your memory.

Use gratitude to go back for Hajj. It’s very, very sad for pilgrims to leave Makah especially after they have made their final Tawwaf and left the Grand Mosque Masjid-al-Haram. Those who have returned from Hajj should encourage others upon whom Hajj is compulsory to start making preparations from now and to go and perform this great duty of Hajj next year.

Keep doing good deeds even if they are little because regular small deeds are better than disrupted greater ones. You should know that deeds, which Allah Almighty Loves most, are the most regular and constant ones even though they were little.

May Allah Almighty accept the Hajj of

all pilgrims who performed this year and before, help them to maintain it until they reach the end of their life, and also take them again in His house

for performing Hajj. We also ask Allah (SWT) to accept our good deeds and provide us steadfastness and uprightness until death. Ameen!

‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl

He was at the end of the third decade of his life on the day the Prophet (saw) made public his call to guidance and truth. He was held in high regard by the Quraysh, being wealthy and of noble lineage. Some others like him (Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, Mus’ab ibn ‘Umayr and other sons of noble families in Makkah-ra) had become Muslims. He too might have followed their example were it not for his father. His father, Abu Jahl, was the foremost proponent of shirk and one of the greatest tyrants of Makkah. Through torture, he sorely tested the faith of the early believers, but they remained steadfast. He used every stratagem to make them waver, but they continued to affirm the truth.

‘Ikrimah (ra) found himself defending the leadership and authority of his father as he pitted himself against the Prophet (saw). His animosity towards the Prophet (saw), his persecution of his followers and his attempts to block the progress of Islam and the Muslims won the admiration of his father.

At Badr, Abu Jahl led the Makkan polytheists in the Battle against the Muslims. He swore by al-Lat and al-Uzza that he would not return to Makkah unless he crushed Muhammad (saw). At Badr, he sacrificed three camels to these goddesses. He drank wine and had the music of singing girls to spur the Quraysh on to fight.

Abu Jahl was among the first to fall in the battle. His son ‘Ikrimah (ra) saw him as spears pierced his body and heard him let out his last cry of agony. ‘Ikrimah (ra) returned to Makkah leaving behind the corpse of the Quraysh chieftain, his father. He wanted to bury him in Makkah, but the crushing defeat they suffered made this impossible.

From that day, the fire of hatred burned even more fiercely in the heart of ‘Ikrimah (ra). Others whose fathers were killed at Badr also

became more hostile to Muhammad (saw) and his followers. This eventually led to the Battle of Uhud.

At Uhud, ‘Ikrimah (ra) was accompanied by his wife, Umm Hakim. She and other women stood behind the battle lines beating their drums, urging the Quraysh on to battle and upbraiding any horseman who felt inclined to flee.

Leading the right flank of the Quraysh was Khalid ibn al-Walid. On the left was ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl (ra). The Quraysh inflicted heavy losses on the Muslims and felt that they had avenged themselves for the defeat at Badr. This was not, however, the end of the state of conflict.

At the Battle of the Trench, the Quraysh mushrikun besieged Madinah. It was a long siege. The resources and patience of the mushrikun were wearing out. ‘Ikrimah (ra), feeling the strain of the siege, saw a place where the trench, dug by Muslims, was relatively narrow. With a gigantic effort, he managed to cross. A small group of Quraysh followed him. It was a foolhardy undertaking. One of them was immediately killed and it was only by turning on his heels that ‘Ikrimah (ra) managed to save himself.

Nine years after his hijrah, the Prophet (saw) returned with thousands of his companions to Makkah. The Quraysh saw them approaching and decided to leave the way open for them because they knew that the Prophet (saw) had given instructions to his commanders not to open hostilities. ‘Ikrimah (ra) and some others, however, went against the consensus of the Quraysh and attempted to block the progress of the Muslim forces. Khalid ibn al-Walid (ra), now a Muslim, met and defeated them in a small engagement during which some of ‘Ikrimah’s men were killed and others who could, fled. Among those who escaped was ‘Ikrimah himself.

Any standing or influence that ‘Ikrimah

(ra) may have had was now completely destroyed. The Prophet (saw) entered Makkah and gave a general pardon and amnesty to all Quraysh who entered the sacred mosque, or who stayed in their houses or who went to the house of Abu Sufyan, the paramount Quraysh leader. However, he refused to grant amnesty to a few individuals, whom he named. He gave orders that they should be killed, even if they were found under the covering of the Ka’bah. At the top of this list was ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl (ra). When ‘Ikrimah (ra) learned of this, he slipped out of Makkah in disguise and headed for the Yemen.

Umm Hakim (ra), ‘Ikrimah’s wife, then went to the camp of the Prophet (saw). With her was Hind bint ‘Utbah, the wife of Abu Sufyan and the mother of Mu’awiyah, and about ten other women who wanted to pledge their allegiance to the Prophet (saw). At the camp were two of his wives, his daughter Fatimah (ra) and other members of the family. Hind (ra) was the one who spoke. She was veiled and felt deeply ashamed of what she had done to Hamzah, the Prophet’s uncle, at the Battle of Uhud.

“O Messenger of Allah,” she said, “Praise be to Allah Who has made manifest the religion He has chosen for Himself. I beseech you out of the bonds of kinship to treat me well. I am now a believing woman who affirms the Truth of your mission.” She then unveiled herself and said:

“I am Hind, the daughter of ‘Utbah, O Messenger of Allah.”

“Welcome to you,” replied the Prophet (saw).

“By Allah, O Prophet” continued Hind (ra), “there was not a house on earth that I wanted to destroy more than your house. Now, there is no house on earth that I so dearly with to honor and raise in glory than yours.”

Umm Hakim (ra) then got up and professed her faith in Islam and said:

“O Messenger of Allah, ‘Ikrimah has fled from you to the Yemen out of fear that you would kill him. Grant him security and Allah will grant you security.”

“He is secure,” promised the Prophet (saw).

Umm Hakim set out immediately in search of ‘Ikrimah (ra). Accompanying her was a Greek slave. When they had gone quite far on the way, he tried to seduce her but she managed to put him off until she came to a settlement of Arabs. She sought their help against him. They tied him up and kept him. Umm Hakim (ra) continued on her way until she finally found ‘Ikrimah (ra) on the coast of the Red Sea in the region of Tihamah. He was negotiating transport with a Muslim seaman who was saying to him:

“Be pure and sincere and I will transport you.”

“How can I be pure?” asked ‘Ikrimah (ra).

“Say, I testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

“I have fled from this very thing,” said ‘Ikrimah (ra).

At this point, Umm Hakim came up to ‘Ikrimah (ra) and said:

“O cousin, I have come to you from the most generous of men, the most righteous of men, the best of men - from Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah. I have asked him for an amnesty for you. This he has granted. So do not destroy yourself.”

“Have you spoken to him?”

“Yes, I have spoken to him and he has granted you amnesty,” she assured him, and he returned with her. She told him about the attempt of their Greek slave to dishonor her and ‘Ikrimah (ra) went directly to the Arab settlement where he lay bound and killed him.

At one of their resting places on their way back, ‘Ikrimah (ra) wanted to sleep with his wife, but she vehemently refused and said:

“I am a Muslimah and you are a Mushrik.”

‘Ikrimah (ra) was totally taken aback and said, “Living without you and without your sleeping with me is an impossible situation.”

As ‘Ikrimah (ra) approached Makkah, the Prophet (saw) told his companions:

“’Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl shall come to you as a believer and a muhajir (a refugee). Do not insult his father. Insulting the dead causes grief to the living and does not reach the dead.”

‘Ikrimah (ra) and his wife came up to where the Prophet (saw) was sitting. The Prophet (saw) got up and greeted him enthusiastically.

“Muhammad,” said ‘Ikrimah (ra), “Umm Hakim has told me that you have granted me an amnesty.”

“That’s right,” said the Prophet (saw), “You are safe.”

“To what do you invite?” asked ‘Ikrimah (ra).

“I invite you to testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Servant of Allah and His Messenger, to establish Prayer and pay the Zakat and carry out all the other obligations of Islam.”

“By God,” responded ‘Ikrimah (ra), “you have only called to what is true and you have only commanded that which is good. You lived among us before the start of your mission - then you were the most trustworthy of us in speech and the most righteous of us.” Stretching forth his hands he said, “I testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger.” The Prophet (saw) then instructed him to say, “I call on Allah and those present here to witness that I am a Muslim who is a Mujahid and a Muhajir”. This ‘Ikrimah (ra) repeated and then said:

“I ask you to ask Allah for forgiveness for me for all the hostility I directed against you and for whatever insults I expressed in your presence or absence.” The Prophet (saw) replied with the prayer:

“O Lord, forgive him for all the hostility he directed against me and from all the expeditions he mounted wishing to put out Your light. Forgive him for whatever he has said or done in my presence or absence to dishonor me.”

‘Ikrimah’s face beamed with happiness.

“By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I promise that whatever I have spent obstructing the way of Allah, I shall spend twice as much in His path and whatever battles I have fought against Allah’s way I shall fight twice as much in His way.”

From that day on, ‘Ikrimah (ra) was committed to the mission of Islam as a brave horseman in the field of battle and as

a steadfast worshipper who would spend much time in mosques rendering the Book of Allah. Often he would place the Mus-haf on his face and say, “The Book of my Lord, the words of my Lord” and he would cry from the fear of Allah.

‘Ikrimah (ra) remained true to his pledge to the Prophet (saw). Whatever battles the Muslims engaged in thereafter, he participated in them and he was always in the vanguard of the army. At the Battle of Yarmuk he plunged into the attack as a thirsty person after cold water on a blistering hot day. In one encounter in which the Muslims were under heavy attack, ‘Ikrimah (ra) penetrated deep into the ranks of the Byzantine forces. Khalid ibn al-Walid (ra) rushed up to him and said, “Don’t, ‘Ikrimah. Your death will be a severe blow to the Muslims.”

“Let us carry on, Khalid,” said ‘Ikrimah (ra), now at the peak of motivation. “You had the privilege of being with the Messenger of Allah before this. As for my father and I, we were among his bitterest enemies. Leave me now to atone for what I have done in the past. I fought the Prophet (saw) on many occasions. Shall I now flee from the Byzantines? This shall never be.” Then calling out to the Muslims, he shouted, “Who shall pledge to fight until death?”

Four hundred Muslims including his uncle al-Harith ibn Hisham and ‘Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi’ah (ra) responded to his call. They plunged into the battle and fought heroically without the leadership of Khalid ibn al-Walid (ra). Their daring attack paved the way for a decisive Muslim victory.

When the battle was over, the bodies of three wounded mujahidin lay sprawled on the battleground, among them al-Harith ibn Hisham, ‘Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi’ah and ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl (ra). Al-Harith (ra) called for water to drink. As it was brought to him, ‘Ayyash looked at him and Harith (ra) said:

“Give it to ‘Ayyash.” By the time they got to ‘Ayyash (ra), he had just breathed his last. When they returned to al-Harith and ‘Ikrimah (ra), they found that they too had passed away.

The companions prayed that Allah might be pleased with them all and grant them refreshment from the spring of Kawthar in Paradise, refreshment after which there is no more thirst.

The Pious Man and the ShopkeeperThere lived a pious man all by himself, who spent most of his time in praying, fasting and praising Allah. Almost all his waking hours were utilised in meditation and devotions. He was very happy with his spiritual progress. No wicked thoughts came to his mind and no evil temptations entered his heart.

One night, he dreamt a rather disturbing dream. He saw that a shopkeeper in the town was far superior to him in spirituality and that he must go to him to learn the basics of true spiritual life.

In the morning, the pious man went in search of the shopkeeper. He found him busy with his customers, selling goods and collecting money with a cheerful face. He sat there in a corner of the shop and watched the shopkeeper carefully. No signs of any spiritual life at all, he said to himself. His dream could not be true. But then he saw the shopkeeper disappear to pray his Salah. When he returned, he was busy dealing with money matters again.

The shopkeeper noticed the pious man sitting in the corner and asked: “As Salamu Alaikum, would you like something, brother?”

“Wa Alaikum As Salam. Oh! No! No!” said the pious man. “I don’t want to buy anything, but I want to ask you a question.” He then related his dream.

“Well, that is very simple to explain,” said the shopkeeper, “but you will have to do something for me before I answer your question.”

Donate for Clean Drinking Water

Water Hand PumpsDonating for the installation of water wells is a sadaqah jaria (or continuous charity), where one may receive rewards for as long as people and wildlife are benefiting from the clean water. You can install hand pumps on behalf of yourself, or on behalf of others including deceased loved one.Hidaya installs water hand pumps in poor areas where the water table is shallow (130 ft or less). It costs $300 to install each water hand pump.

Delivery with Water TankerThere are cities with dense populations lack adequate fresh water because municipalities which should be supplying them are failing due to decaying infrastructure and rising population. For such instances, Hidaya delivers water to the masses via water tanker which is filled with fresh water from our own wells. Just $10 can sponsor a round of water from a 1,200 gallon tanker to benefit hundreds of people.

A Companion of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), Sa’d ibn Ubadah, asked the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), “Umm Sa’d has died; what form of Charity (Sadaqah) is best?” He (PBUH) replied: “Water (is best).” He dug a well and said: It is for Umm Sa’d. (Abu-Dawood #1677)Living in the developed world, we have so many blessings we don’t always realize - one of those being easy access to clean water. Meanwhile, over a billion people world-wide have inadequate access to clean water, most of whom have no choice but to travel miles to stagnant and dirty water sources that hold disease causing bacteria, just for survival. Because of this, water-borne diseases are rampant in economically depressed areas throughout the world.
