Entrepreneur Finds That Persistence Pays off

1. Perseverance can bring rewards. Tommy Makhatho, owner of MT Black Hair Distributors, has learnt this important lesson. He endured many business hardships. before becoming a successful entrepreneur in the end.

2. Makhato was one of the two winners of the Business Partners/Santam Entrepreneur of the Year awards, earlier this month.

3. Like the majority of black township youth of his generation, Makhatho left school at an early age toe seek work, and took a succession of jobs in and around Johannesburg. Between jobs, he maintained a steady hawking business, selling linen bought from Indian traders to customers in the rural areas of Qwa-qwa.

4. In this way, Makhato managed to accumulate enough funds to enable him to enrol for a partime course in hairdressing.

5. On completing the course, Makhato resigned from his permanent employment as a waiter at the Carlton Hotel and established a 'backyard' hair salon in Soweto's Orlando East. Although the business went under after a few months, Makhatho was undaunted. He sold off what was left of his assets, adn with the proceeds (about R7000) went south-east, to Phuthaditjhaba in Qwa-qwa.

6. In 1980, Makhatho established the first professionally run hair salon in the area, with a staff of four, including his wife and two assistants. He operated this business successfully for four years. During this period, he began distributing hair-care products in townships in the Free State, the Northern Cape and Lesotho. Unbeknown to him, his hair-care operation had underlying problems, and these forced him to close down in 1990. He had accumulated a huge debt by this time.

7. Such a setback might have had a lesser entrepreneurial spirit running for cover. The entrepid Makhatho, however, got down to some hard work and ended up paying of his debt in less than three months. He then had the idea of establishing a cosmetics store. Makhatho felt that - unlike his previous distribution operation - a store would have hands-on management attention and control because he could spend more of his time managing it personally.

To help make these businesses viable, we also intend spending hundreds of millions on marketing our country to the world.

7. Already we’ve contributed R50 million to a massive marketing and promotional campaign, which has been seen by over 60 million people living abroad.

8. Many visitors to our country will be attracted by our incredible wildlife, our amazing scenery and our perfect weather. SECTION B: SUMMARY

QUESTION 2

You picked up this pamphlet about Suicide at your local hospital. Read it carefully and answer the question that follow:

COPING WITH SUICIDEKnow the danger signalsThe SA Depression and Anxiety Support Group gives these danger signals as: Previous attempts Talking about death or suicide Planning for suicide Depressed mood or changes in sleeping patterns Changes in appetite and weight Speaking and/moving with unusual speed or slowness Fatigue or loss of energy Feelings of worthlessness, self-reproach or guilt Diminished ability to concentrate Extreme anxiety, agitation or anger Excessive drug and/or alcohol abuse A history of emotional or physical illness Feelings of hopelessness or desperation

What to doIf someone you know talks about suicide, take it seriously. About 75% of all victims give some warning of their intentions to a friend or family member. Rather than trying to argue them out of it, be willing to listen. Let the person know that you are trying to understand and that they are not alone. Social support is one of the best protections agains suicide.Tell them that suicidal feelings are temporary, and that their depression can be treated and thier problems solved.Hopelessness, more than depression, predicts suicide. People who are suicidal don’t want to die, they simply want to end their pain. When they see another way to end their pain, they take it. People kill themselves when they feel there is no other way out.

Always seek help.

Once the person involved is stabilised, it is important to follow up on treatment.
