Born and raised in Elk Rapids, he is a 2005 graduate of Elk Rapids High School. Morris, who spent the past six years on staff at East Jordan Public Schools, will also coach middle school football. The outdoor sports enthusiast paddle boarded across Lake Michigan last summer with plans to cross the remaining four Great Lakes in the future. Living “up north” in a smaller community is a dream-come-true for Keith Schulte. The new middle and high school physical education teacher comes with 16 years experience in both education and business. He has coached multiple sports including football, tennis, and hockey. Schulte and his wife, Jacklyn, and their three children love outdoor activities year-round and “look forward to being part of the Elk family and meeting more great people in this community.” Sara Nicholson is a familiar face at Mill Creek Elementary School where she has volunteered for several years in her children’s classrooms and in the resource room. This year she comes on staff as a kindergarten paraprofessional. Sara and her husband, an ERHS graduate, have a sixth grader and third grader in Elk Rapids schools. The family enjoys boating, visiting family in the Upper Peninsula, and watching freighters travel on the Great Lakes. Elk Rapids residents may remember Carrie Anderson as Carrie Meyers, a 2001 ERHS graduate and standout basketball player. She went on to play for Lake Superior State University while earning an elementary education degree. Anderson also has a master’s degree in reading and literacy along with a degree in cardiac ultrasound. She brings all that, plus experience teaching kindergarten, first, and third grades in Kalkaska Public Schools, to her new position as a fifth grade teacher at Lakeland Elementary School. She and her husband, Kyle, have four children, Cooper, Marley, Spencer, and Weston. Haley Williams is ready to jump in “head first and give it all I’ve got” as she teaches music at Lakeland and Mill Creek this year. That’s the enthusiasm of the recent Albion College graduate who says she is “excited to finally get the chance to teach my own students in my own classrooms.” Williams, who just moved to Elk Rapids over the Labor Day weekend, is an avid runner, reader, and knitter, and offers private clarinet lessons in her spare time. New paraprofessional Kortni Huron will be helping ERHS students and staff in the library and the office. She said her new position is a “dream come true” as it combines her clerical experience with a natural enthusiasm for kids of all ages. She and her husband, Sam, have one son, Jackson, who will attend preschool at Lakeland this year. They enjoy all outdoor activities, especially if it’s on the water. After 24 years in a variety of health occupations, Stephanie Gildersleeve is eager to team up with the staff and students at Cherryland Middle School where she’ll merge the roles of assistant athletic director and office assistant. Her volunteer work with children in schools, churches, and scouting has prepared her for the wide variety of tasks in her new position. She and her husband, David, moved here from Alaska five years ago. They have two sons, Steven and Andrew, both ERHS alumni. Amy Starkey looks forward to getting to know high school students as the newest face in school’s library media center. “I love Elk Rapids schools because of the friendly staff and respectful students,” she said. Starkey is not totally new to ER schools — she was a substitute teacher at Mill Creek last year. She and her husband, Nate, have three children at Mill Creek: Kaylen, Sam, and Aaron. She enjoys crafting, reading, watching baseball, and spending time outdoors with her family. New staff at Elk Rapids Schools continues next week.
