Starting and uploading sources into Nvivo9

1. Creating a New Project

2. Name the tittle of project

3. To start uploading your files, click the Internals folder and then, click External Data

4. Click Documents and a dialog box ‘Import Internals’ will appear. Click Browse, select the file you want to import and click Open. Click OK.

Nodes and Coding

1. The nodes represent a code, idea or a theme. For example, nodes can indicate concepts,

persons, processes or geographical places. In Nvivo9, nodes are containers that let you gather

related material in one place so that you can look for emerging patterns and ideas.

Click Nodes in the Navigation View.

2. Under the Nodes folder, you can create your own folders and subfolders to organize your nodes.

>>Right-click the Nodes to create a new folder.

7

Page 8: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

3. Label your folder for your nodes.

4. Double-click your folder that you have created to view your folder.

5. To start creating a node, click Node on the Create tab. The New Node dialog box will appear.

8

Page 9: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

6. Enter a name and description. Click OK and, in the List View the new node is added.

7. Add ‘child’ nodes (sub-nodes) under the new node and create a node hierarchy. To add a child

node, right-click the parent node and click new node.

9

10

Page 11: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

8. Type the name for the child node.

You will get this:

11

Page 12: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

9. To start coding, go to sources and double-click on your imported document that you wish to

code. You will see this in your Nvivo workspace;

10. Then, click the Nodes in the Navigation View.

12

Page 13: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

11. Select the content you want to code and drag it to the node in List View.

Or use the Quick Coding Bar (at the bottom of Details View) to code content at existing nodes.

For example,

12. Under the name of the child node for e.g Positive Attitude node and in Sources, it can be

observed that the number of source is 1 and the number of reference is 1.

13

Page 14: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

13. Double-click on the child node to view what you have selected. For example, the child node e.g

Postitive Attitude.

You can also right-click on the link to open a source, and also see what sources were coded

As you code, the number of sources and refernces increases.

14

Page 15: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

14. You can open a node to view related references that are collected in one place. Right-click the

node and click open referenced source.

The following will appear:

Emerging Themes

1. After coding the nodes, you can do several things, For example, Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word

Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

On the Explore tab, in the Queries group, click New Query, and then click Word Frequency.

There are different ranges of words frequency you can choose from, ranging from ‘Exact Match

15

only’, ‘including stemmed words’, ‘including synonyms’,’including specialisation’ and ‘including

generalisation’. Then, click Run.

The result for the Word Frequency Query will display this:

You can also display the result of a Word Frequency query in the form of a tag cloud, tree map

or cluster analysis.

Figure 3: Cluster analysis

2. Since you will be able to identify the words that occur the most in your data, you can use these

words as your ‘emerging’ nodes or themes. For example, the words ‘groups’ and ‘presented’.

18

Page 19: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

3. To view the node that has the word, for e.g ‘group’, you can right-click the word and click Open

Node Preview.

Below shows the nodes of the sources that have the word ‘group’ included in their data:

4. If you wish to create these emerging nodes into Nvivo, right-click the word (for e.g presented)

and click Create as Node.

19

Page 20: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

5. A dialog box will appear where you will have to select the location as to where you want your

new node to be placed.

6. Under the nodes in the List View, a new node ‘presentated’ is added.

20

Page 21: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

7. Double-click the node to view the coding that has the word ‘presented’.

8. Hence, you can use these nodes to write up a report. For example, you can export the nodes into

a document such as Microsoft Word.

Right-Click the nodes at the Detail View, and click Export Node.

21

Page 22: EE5101 F QUALITATIVE - file · Web viewEE5101 F QUALITATIVE. Basic Introduction to NVivo. ... Nvivo9 allows you to run a Word Frequency query to see the words that occur most often.

9. The Export Options dialog box will appear. Click Open on Export and OK.

10. Your nodes will be exported to Microsoft Word or in a html format.

and weaknesses….”

A priori themes

1. Data Collection

2. Learnt

Data collection, in this node, Mostly data collection is gathered from the interview, observations, survey,

resources from internet, images and video. It is an ongoing process until the theories are form. The

ethical issues raised are obtaining the participant permission, confidentiality, privacy and protection.

Reference 1: “…… data collection; Internet sources. They explained how the data analysed on 5

23

articles which are using internet source as their resource. The ethical issue raised on the data

collection is; obtaining the permission with the participant, confidentiality, privacy and

protection.”

Reference 2: “Data collection is ongoing process, continously as the theories are form.”

Reference 3: “…. the data collection (interviews, observations, survey, images and videos).”

Reference 4: “The data collection gathered by means of transcribing the interview and questions

results.”

Learnt, in this node, what can I learnt is that a good researcher must have skills in order to get more

information and the advantages is to gives us better understanding of real life situation and experiences.

Reference 2: “In doing observation, a researcher must have skills in order to get more

information for his/her research.”

Reference 2: “Advantages of doing a case study include facilitating the exploration of the

unexpected and unusual, helping us to understand complex inter-relationships etc.”

Reference 3: “The strengths of this researchl; it gives better understanding of real life situation

& experiences; good at surfacing deep issues & making voices heard; able to query and probe in

depth issue of a phenomenon.”
