Distinguished guests and dear friends,

On the commencement of the 5th Baosteel Biennial Academic Conference, first of all, on behalf ofBaosteel Group Corporation and Conference Organizing Committee, I'm so privileged to express ourwarmhearted welcome to all the participants, as well as our sincere gratitudes to both new and oldfriends for your active support and attendance at our conference.

This conference has had great success for the last four sessions, attracting enthusiastic support frommany domestic and overseas experts, scholars and peers. Today, to my great pleasure, we are here toreunify our old friends, and meet more new friends.

At present, the world steel industry is faced with unprecedented plights and challenges. In the low-profitera, I think it is important to confront issues and counter-measures for both our industry and ourenterprise. From quantity to quality, from extensive operation to fine production, resource, environmentand sustainable development have become the theme of global steel makers. What's more, R & D onnew processes, new technology and new products, low carbon economy, higher resource utilization andbetter service are the key points to promote technical advancement and corporate competitiveness.Therefore, Baosteel is again holding the fifth BAC in order to intensify the academic exchange andcollaboration between domestic and overseas steel work, universities and research institutes, and to setup an exchange platform to jointly share the latest academic progress.

Furthermore, in order to enhance the collaboration between up-stream and down-stream sectors, thisconference will be jointly held with the 17th Shanghai Metallurgy Expo.
