From empirical observation we suggested that "the y oung child's hunger for his

mother's love and presence is as great as his hunger for food", and that in

consequence her absence inevitably generates "a powerful sense of loss and anger".

Resilience reflects individuals who ( 1 ) resemble a twig with a fresh, green

living core. When twist.ad out of shape, such a twig bends, but it does not break;

instead, it springs back and continues growing. In resilience both genes and ( 2 )

defenses like humor and altruism is facilitated by our being among loving friends.

use of a theoretical model to establish an intemersonal process wherein trained

play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve

psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development".

A dependent variable is an element of an experiment that measures any effect of the

manipulation. It measures the extent to which behavior depends on the

independent variable—^that is. dependent variables reveal the effects that

independent variables have on behavior. Such effects are often revealed by

measures of performance, such as test scores.

It has not always been clear to students of Jung's analytical psychology what his

famous 'types' are types of. The commonest assumption has been that they refer to

types of people. But for Jung, thev were tvnes of consciousness, that is.

characteristic orientations assumed bv the ego in estabHshing and discriminating

an individual's inner and outer reaHtv.

Weber tradition insists that research subjects have the right to he informed about the

nature and consequences nf eYppriments in which thev are involved. Proper respect for

human freedom generally includes two necessary conditions. First, subjects must agree

voluntarily to participate—that is, without physical or psychological coercion. Second,

their agreement must be based on full and open information. The Articles of the

Nuremberg Tribunal and the Declaration of Helsinki both state that subjects must be

told the duration, methods, possible risks, and the purpose or aim of the experiment.

A very important aspect of a ( 1 ) is the selection of the ( 2 ) . It is tempting to

select somebody who is comfortable, a good fnend, and who will not be seen as critical. It is
