• Hubble lived from 1889-1953• He is widely regarded as the most influential observational
cosmologist of the 20th century• He was born in Marshfield, Missouri• He studied law at Oxford• After a few months he stopped practicing law and started
back on astronomy. Which was considered his first love
Discoveries
• Discovered there are other galaxies• Discovered that Nebulae were made of stars as well as gas.
Hubble’s Book
• Hubble published a book called The Observational Approach to Cosmology and The Realm of the Nebulae
• Book was written in 1936
Contributions to Astronomy
• Found that the Andromeda nebula was actually a galaxy• Found that the Universe was expanding, with farther galaxies
receding faster than nearby ones.
Death & Legacy
• Hubble died in 1953• Hubble spent most of his later life trying to prove astronomy
as a type of physics• Hubble telescope was named in honor of Edwin Hubble
