Scenes for the movie “The Lucky Ones” starring Tim Robbins and Rachel McAdams were filmed in downtown Edwardsville in June 2007.
Enjoy and discover the stories of Edwardsville, the third oldest city in Illinois.
Take a walk through Edwardsville and catch sight of a vibrant downtown
shopping district bookmarked by historic sites and scenic parks and the
mother of all roads, Route 66.
Originally settled in 1805, Edwardsville has grown from a one-room log
cabin to a thriving community. Home to Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville, Lewis & Clark Community College’s N.O. Nelson Center and
the Mannie Jackson Center for the Humanities, the city also has three
fascinating historic districts which trace the growth of the community
over the years and 39 buildings designated historic landmarks.
Edwardsville has provided Illinois with five of its governors in its nearly
200 year history. Abraham Lincoln also made documented visits to the
city in the 1840’s and in 1858. Not only does the city boast an impressive
history, it plays host to several major amateur sporting events annually
which range from bicycle races to pro-am tennis futures.
Singer Jackson Browne recorded several songs for his album “Running on Empty” while staying in a local hotel.

WILDEY THEATRE
Come take a seat in the historic Wildey Theatre located in downtown Edwardsville. Sit back and relax in the art deco auditorium and imagine a time when Ginger Rogers danced across the stage, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. thrilled audiences or W.C. Fields captivated with his vaudeville comedy. The Wildey, built in 1909, long before Route 66 found its way into and through Edwardsville, has been the hub of movie and live entertainment for decades. When it opened, it was considered one of the largest, most modern entertainment theaters in Illinois.
Shuttered for a time in the mid-1980’s, the building was later purchased by the City of Edwardsville and renovated. Reborn as an intimate live entertainment venue, it now seats 400 people, features a classic concession area and lounge and hosts live entertainment including Gallagher, The Gregg Rolie Band, Wishbone Ash, Savoy Brown, Pat Boone and Lita Ford. It is also home to $2 Tuesday night movies, weddings, community fashion shows and much more. For a complete list of entertainment options at the Wildey, go to: WildeyTheatre.com
ROUTE 66
Since 1926, the mythical Mother Road of Route 66 has wound its way through downtown Edwardsville. Although the original brick roadway has been replaced, signposts and buildings still mark the way and adventurers can enjoy a portion of America’s original super highway.
Route 66 roughly follows Illinois Route 157 and Vandalia Street through downtown Edwardsville. Several historic gems of that era remain on Vandalia Street including buildings that now house Afterwords Books, 441 E. Vandalia St., Dewey’s Pizza, 112 E. Vandalia St., Cleveland Heath Restaurant, 106 N. Main St., and City Park.

For more than two decades, the scenic MCT Trails — developed, owned and maintained by the Madison County Transit District (MCT) — have transformed Madison County, Illinois into a haven for bicyclists, runners, walkers, tness enthusiasts and nature lovers. In January 1993, MCT began acquiring and converting former railroad corridors into scenic bikeways. Today, these bikeways, known as the MCT Trails, form one of the most extensive and inter- connected trail systems in the country. Spanning more than 125 miles and more than a dozen communities, the MCT Trails have created a bicycle culture which is enhancing the quality of life, promoting wellness, improving property values and serving as a magnet for new homebuyers and tourists.
A leader in multi-modal transportation, MCT has shown that uniting trails and transit – by placing bike racks on buses and bus stops at trail intersections – provides a seamless bike and bus connection for thousands of residents every day.
Use this pocket-sized map as a guide to aid you in exploring the MCT Trails. Each of the trails is represented on the map as a different color. A full description of each trail, along with its respective trail length, surface type and parking options is detailed on the right. Bus icons can also be found on the map where MCT routes intersect MCT Trails. The interconnected MCT Trails also form seven trail loops of varying distances. Each loop is detailed on the opposite side of this map.
Enjoy your journey on the MCT Trails and please visit our website at www.mcttrails.org, e-mail [email protected] or call 618-797-4600 to let us know that you were here, ask any questions or report a trail issue.
