location has always been one of the greatest assets shared by Edwardsville and Glen Carbon. From highways and railroads to waterways and airports, both communities are situated in the intensely beating heart of mid-America’s transportation infrastructure. Take their precise geographic positioning: Situated almost exactly on the 90th meridian, Edwardsville and Glen
Carbon are part of a five-county region in Illinois commonly referred to as the Metro East, which describes their orientation within the greater St. Louis area.
aiRWith downtown St. Louis just minutes away, residents of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon enjoy
easy access to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (www.flystl.com), with daily service to all major airports and many regional airports provided by American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Northwest, Southwest, United and U.S. Airways. Residents also have access to three regional airports.
RoadA strong highway system connects cities across the United States. Residents here are only a few
miles away from cross-country interstates I-44, I-55, I-64 and I-70, as well as I-255 and I-270, which provide a bypass loop around St. Louis County and the Metro East. From a nostalgic perspective, two of the nation’s most recognized two-lane highways run through the area. Historic Route 66 runs right through downtown Edwardsville, while Route 50, the nation’s only coast-to-coast two-lane highway, skirts the southern extremities of Madison County.
Statewide infrastructure initiatives have improved the major highways through Edwardsville and Glen Carbon. Highways 159 and 157, the main arteries in both communities, have been widened and expanded, and phase two of the cross-city thoroughfare, Governors Parkway, is complete, giving residents a quick route across town.
mass tRansitPublic transportation is an increasingly viable option in the region.
Madison County Transit • (www.mct.org) offers award-winning bus service throughout Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, Madison County, and the St. Louis area. Buses connect riders to points within the two communities, to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, to transporta-tion hubs around the county and to MetroLink for access to many popular St. Louis destinations. Metro• (www.metrostlouis.org) offers MetroBus and MetroLink light rail transportation to destina-tions throughout St. Louis, including Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, and a MetroLink station is only 20 minutes away. Interstate rail travel is easily accessed through a nearby • Amtrak station (www.amtrak.com) in Alton, IL, with daily service to St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City, Dallas and San Antonio.

Although there is some debate about exact dates, Edwardsville is generally acknowledged as the third-oldest city in Illinois. Due in part to a thriving Native American population in the area, including the nearby Cahokia settlement, some of the first European settlers to forge across the Illinois prairies halted in this region. In 1805, South Carolina native Thomas Kirkpatrick constructed a two-room cabin on a bluff overlooking Cahokia Creek. His family homestead, which would have been located on the northern side of Edwardsville today, prospered from the beginning, and word of the family’s good fortunes quickly spread back east.
By 1809 more settlers joined the Kirkpatricks, forming a small village. Edwardsville was forever changed by the arrival of Benjamin Stephenson and Ninian Edwards from Kentucky. Edwards was appointed governor of the newly formed Illinois Territory in 1809, and served as governor of the state of Illinois from 1826 to 1830. During the War of 1812, Stephenson, already an appointed sheriff, achieved the rank of colonel. After the war, Col. Stephenson served as a congressional representative for the Illinois Territory from 1816 to 1818.
Perhaps the most lasting impression Stephenson made upon the area was architectural. Both Stephenson and Edwards erected stately Federal brick homes in a portion of town referred to as Upper Edwardsville. Miraculously, thanks to ambitious restoration efforts, Col. Benjamin Stephenson’s house still stands today. The most significant legacy Edwards bestowed upon the local area was his name. In 1812, Edwards named the Kirkpatrick cabin as the seat of justice for newly created Madison County. In return, in 1813, Kirkpatrick named the young town Edwardsville.
In the decades leading up to the Civil War, Edwardsville, the “Land of Goshen,” continued to grow. The town served as the western end of a significant road that cut across the state from Madison County to Shawneetown on the Ohio River, creating a vital artery for population growth. By the time the Civil War ended, Edwardsville was a thriving town of nearly 2,000, featuring everything from a courthouse and a local news-paper (The Intelligencer) to beer breweries and a steam furniture factory.
Around 1890, industrialist N.O. Nelson, inspired by new economic philosophies of profit sharing, built a modern manufacturing facility, complete with a selection of modest, yet attractive, new homes for his employees. He named the project “Leclaire” after a French profit-sharing pioneer. The 150 acres sat just southeast of Edwardsville’s center. His fac-tory, which made plumbing fixtures, was a model of efficiency highlighted by exemplary working conditions.
Edwardsville’s good fortunes continued into the 20th century. The Edwardsville Chamber of Commerce, an advocacy group for local busi-ness, was founded in 1923. The country’s most revered highway, Route 66, blazed its way from Chicago to Los Angeles right through the heart of Edwardsville. The area was growing, and new businesses and industries were demanding employees with a college education. In 1955, a group of concerned parents and business leaders from the Chamber of Commerce began a campaign to establish a public university in the Metro East. In 1957, Southern Illinois University opened two residence centers in Alton and East St. Louis. Groundbreaking for SIU Edwardsville was held in 1963, and classes began on the new SIUE campus in 1965.
glEn caRbonLiterally translated, Glen Carbon means “Valley of Coal,” and Glen
Carbon’s history is inseparably linked with this black gold.Glen Carbon was actually home to settlers of European descent before
Edwardsville. In 1801, Col. Samuel Judy, of Swiss lineage, became the first permanent resident of Madison County after receiving a military grant of 100 acres near the base of the bluffs. However, throughout most of the century the area remained predominantly rural. After the Civil War, coal mining became a serious indus trial venture in southwestern Illinois, and Glen Carbon was positioned on top of vast coal reserves. The Madison Coal Corporation operated two coal mines and a coal-washing facility south of Edwardsville, which drew an increasing population into these hills. In 1892, 76 residents petitioned the county court, and the Village of Glen Carbon was officially incorporated.
Coal mining was the economic bedrock for Glen Carbon, but brick production, which came to the community around the turn of the cen-tury, also played a significant role. The Saint Louis Press Brick Company produced all the bricks used in constructing facilities for the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. Along with the Madison Coal Corporation, the brick company participated in building company houses. These diminutive “saltbox” homes were once common in Glen Carbon, and some still stand along Main Street.
While Glen Carbon owes its municipal origins to coal mining and its cultural origins to working people of Eastern European descent, it owes much of its current success to the opening of the SIU Edwardsville campus. By 1980, Glen Carbon’s population exploded, ballooning 174 percent. Glen Carbon still honors its coal mining heritage, with statues and parks standing throughout the town as dignified reminders.

The Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Cham-ber of Commerce is southern Madison County’s largest business association, representing more than 500 businesses in
the region. With a committed and involved lead-ership, the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce provides business leadership by promoting economic opportunities, advocating in the interests of business, providing members with education and resources, and encouraging mutual support.
Located less than 30 minutes from down-town St. Louis, Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and MidAmerica St. Louis Airport, the area offers a central, Midwestern location and multimodal transportation access. Bordered by three major interstates, Edwardsville/Glen Carbon offers easy access to both coasts of the United States. An outstanding selection of well-positioned buildings and developed sites are available for prospective businesses.
A high quality of life and comparatively stable economy appeal to companies, as do the community’s central location, strategically planned infrastructure and strong communica-tions links. Tax incentives and other benefits are in place to ensure that the area continues to be business-friendly.
Available, affordable land and access to a pro-ductive workforce has led to Edwardsville/Glen Carbon being one of the more desirable loca-tions in the St. Louis metropolitan area for logis-tics and distribution operations. Edwardsville is home to Gateway Commerce Center and its many large warehouse operations, like Proctor & Gamble, Hershey, Unilever, Dial and others. It is also home to Lakeview Commerce Park and its state-of-the-art bulk distribution facility.
The communities of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon offer new and expanding companies, job growth, a top-rated school district, millions of dollars in capital investment, and unprecedented partnerships among the public, private and aca-demic sectors.
One important economic partnership is the Edwardsville Economic Development Alliance (EEDA). A nonprofit organization, the EEDA works to market and promote the area for new business investments and economic growth and development. The city of Edwardsville and Edwardsville Township are the principal financial partners in The Edwardsville Economic Development Alliance, providing 90 percent of the annual operating budget.
The Village of Glen Carbon established the Glen Carbon Business Advisory Board in July 2011 to encourage ideas and suggestions
to maintain and improve the local business environment. The Business Advisory Board is comprised of members who own or manage businesses in Glen Carbon. The purpose of the volunteer board is for local business owners to study issues that affect Glen Carbon busi-nesses and provide independent and objec-tive advisory suggestions. The board’s functions include reviewing issues presented by the mayor and Village Board, making independent recom-mendations to the Village Board and mayor on issues concerning Glen Carbon residents and businesses, and scheduling forums on topics of interest to residents and businesses of the vil-lage. For example, the Business Advisory Board could provide its perspective on such topics as changes to sign ordinances, parking lot require-ments and other issues that have the potential to affect a business’ bottom line. While the board is strictly advisory and has no governing author-ity, it creates two-way communication between businesses and village government. In addition to the Business Advisory Board, the Village of Glen Carbon maintains a list of regional, inde-pendent economic development experts with varying areas of expertise that they can consult on an as-needed basis.
There has never been a better time to do business in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon.

siuE: Economic imPact & REsouRcEsA quality educational system in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon pro-
vides outstanding public and private primary and secondary schools, and Lewis and Clark Community College and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) offer quality postsecondary opportunities.
In 2010, SIUE School of Business faculty completed an extensive economic impact study to quantify the university’s contributions to the community. For fiscal year 2010, SIUE had a total economic impact of $471 million on the region.
Beyond the simple numbers, SIUE’s contributions to the future of the community are immeasurable. An educated work force is a major factor in attracting high-tech businesses. More than 43,000 SIUE alumni make their homes in the region, and many have advanced degrees, ranging from master’s to MBAs to doctorates, in dental medicine and pharmacy. Because an educated work force attracts new and vital business, SIUE is a vital economic driver in the community.
SIUE prepares students to become professionals in their fields of study, as well as engaged citizens and leaders in their community. Upon gradua-tion, SIUE alumni are ready to give back to the local community and con-tribute to the betterment and benefit of the region.
In addition, the mere physical presence of SIUE leads to important improvements to the local economy. Over the last five years, SIUE has completed more than half of a $300 million construction and infrastruc-ture improvement plan, and the region has benefited from the construction jobs created through this capital investment.
Whether directly through university and related expenditures, or indi-rectly through the related benefits of an educated work force, SIUE is a key force in the economic development of the region.

Southwestern Illinois is a dynamic real estate and development market that has experienced significant economic growth over the past several years. Business is booming throughout the region. Despite a stagnant economy nationally, the area is seeing commercial development growth, increased sales tax revenue and more requests for housing permits.
Route 157 Development
Illinois State Route 157 in Edwardsville is having a mini building boom. Four projects — three commercial and one mixed-use — are in the works for a two-mile section of the road.
Timberlake Village• , on Route 157 and Lewis Road, is a 4.5-acre com-mercial development. Alpha Omega Commercial Park• at Excel Drive will accommodate up to seven retail companies and office developments. Esic Drive’s • Enclave has two commercial lots and eight residential lots for new apartment buildings. Edison’s Entertainment Complex• , across from Sunset Hill Cemetery, will include a 12-lane bowling alley, laser tag arena, arcade, restaurant, and bar and grill.
Rebirth of the Wildey
In 2011 the historic Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville, which first opened in 1909, reopened its doors for the first time since 1984. The $2.9 million renovation was financed without using general tax revenue. One-third of the funding came from an amusement tax the city collects on movies and video rentals, a third from a downtown tax increment financing (TIF) district, and a third from community fundraising. Rangwala Architects of St. Louis was architect for the renovation, and Miller & Maack of Collinsville served as general contractor.
Scott Credit Union Headquarters
In 2012 Scott Credit Union plans to finalize the move of its headquar-ters to Edwardsville. In 2010, Scott closed on the purchase of almost 14 acres of undeveloped land in Edwardsville Corporate Centre, an office park owned by Hortica Insurance & Employee Benefits and located at the interchange of Interstate 55 and Route 143. More than 80 people are expected to relocate to the new three-story, 51,000-square-foot building, including officers and corporate staff currently spread throughout south-western Illinois.
Sam’s Club Coming to Glen CarbonGlen Carbon village trustees have given the green light for St. Louis-
based THF Realty to develop a $25.5 million warehouse-style retail build-ing on 14 acres along Illinois 159. The project will take shape on property formerly occupied by Goshen Do-It Center and Four Flags Motors, eventu-ally housing a Sam’s Club location.
Improvements at SIUE
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is in the midst of construc-tion for two 29,000-square-foot projects, each totaling almost $13 million. Work on the Charles and Mary Lukas Athletics Annex and the west wing of the Art & Design Building is expected to be complete by fall of 2012.

Gateway Regional Medical Center provides safe and effective care and has been recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures — among the best in the nation — for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. This recognition comes from The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. The hospital was recognized by The Joint Commission based on data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.
In fact, Gateway Regional Medical Center is one of only 405 U.S. hospi-tals and critical access hospitals earning the distinction of top performer on key quality measures for attaining and sustaining excellence. Inclusion on the list is based on an aggregation of accountability measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the previous calendar year.
“We understand that what matters most to our patients is safe, effec-tive care,” said Mark Bethell, chief executive officer of Gateway Regional Medical Center. “That’s why Gateway has made a commitment to evidence-based care processes. We have earned this recognition through the dedica-tion and skill of our medical staff, nurses and other clinicians who care for our patients each day.”
Dan Kernebeck, quality director at Gateway, said, “I think we go above and beyond in those four categories — heart attack, heart failure, pneumo-nia and surgical care. Our ‘best practices’ approach needs to be reproduc-ible. It needs to happen every time for every patient and that truly is our goal — to help us provide high-quality, safe, cost-effective care to each and every patient each and every time.”
According to Dr. Michael Adams, “The community can be proud that they have access to a top-performing hospital conveniently located here in the community. For individuals who have come to the hospital in the last few years … I know they have seen this change in quality. For those who have not recently had a chance to embrace the community hospital and our range of quality services, we are pleased to offer you and your family safe and effective care.”
Kernebeck concluded, “Gateway’s accreditation by The Joint Commission represents our commitment to quality and the level of com-mitment we give our patients to ensure they receive safe, high-quality care. As evidenced by recognition as a ‘Top Performer on Key Quality Measures’ for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care, quality, and safety are at the center of everything we do.”
