Everyone 6 months and older should get an an-nual flu vaccine. It takes about 2 weeks after the
vaccination for your body to develop an immune re-sponse. Get vaccinated now, so you will be protect-ed all season long!
Influenza (flu) is a conta-gious respiratory disease that infects the nose, throat, and lungs and can lead to serious complications, hos-pitalization, or even death. Pneumonia and bronchitis are examples of serious flu-related complications. The flu also can cause certain health conditions, like dia-betes, asthma, and heart and lung disease, to be-come worse. Anyone can
get sick from the flu and spread it to friends and loved ones-even if you consider yourself to be healthy. Get-ting a flu vaccine is the sin-gle best way to protect your-self and your family from this serious disease.
While flu activity usually peaks in January or Febru-ary, the flu itself is unpredict-able. Although there are many different flu viruses, the yearly flu vaccine pro-tects against the three virus-es that research predicts will be most common that flu season.
You should get vaccinated every year for two reasons. The first reason is that be-cause flu viruses are con-stantly changing, flu vac-cines may be updated from one season to the next to

Tips For Reducing Stress During The Holidays
Holidays can present a lot of demands which can result in stress, anxiety and depression. Shopping, parties, enter-
taining, and guests to name a few can be exhausting. The following are several tips to help you minimize the stress
and enjoy the holidays:
1. Try to have a positive attitude and try not to worry about things that are out of your control.
2. Prioritize your time and schedule. You cannot be at every activity.
3. Be realistic, every holiday does not have to be perfect.
4. Do not expect the holidays to be the same as when you were a child. Make new memories for you and your
loved ones.
5. Acknowledge your feelings if you have recently lost a loved one. It is normal to feel sad.
6. Stick to your budget when shopping!
7. Volunteer to help others and you may lift your own holiday spirits.
8. Maintain healthy habits. Do not overindulge in food or drink. Get plenty of rest.
9. Take time for yourself. 15 minutes of “you time” a day can help you handle things.
10. Remember the real spirit of the holidays. Enjoy and be thankful for family and friends.

protect against the most recent and most commonly circulating viruses. The second reason is that a person’s immune protec-tion from vaccination declines over time, so annual vaccina-tion is needed for optimal pro-tection. Therefore, yearly vac-cination is recommended even for those who received the vaccine during the previous flu season.
To receive your flu vaccine, contact the Midway Clinic at 620-659-2732 or the Edwards County Health Department at 620-659-3102. This year the Edwards County Hospital Aux-iliary has been very generous in providing the vaccine for FREE to all individuals who reside, work or attend school in Edwards County. Lemon-Garlic Roast Turkey & White-Wine Gravy
Directions: 1. Crush 6 cloves garlic and add to a very large stockpot. Stir in lemon juice, Worcester-
shire, salt and 4 quarts cold water. 2. Remove giblets from turkey (if included) and trim excess skin. Submerge the turkey
in the brine and refrigerate for 24 hours. If the turkey is not fully submerged, turn it every 8 hours.
3. Remove the turkey from the brine, rinse well and pat dry. Discard the brine. 4. Preheat oven to 350°F. 5. Chop the remaining 4 garlic cloves, lemon zest and oregano on a cutting board until
finely minced, then place in a small bowl and stir in oil, pepper and water. Loosen the skin over the breast and thigh meat. Rub the paste all over the turkey, under the skin onto the breast meat and leg meat and a little inside the cavity. Tuck the wing tips under the turkey. Tie the legs together with kitchen string. Place the turkey breast-side down in a roasting rack set in a large roasting pan.
6. Roast the turkey for 1 hour. Turn it breast-side up on the rack, add 1 cup water to the pan, and continue roasting 1 hour more. Baste the turkey with pan drippings, tent with foil and continue roasting, basting every 15 minutes, until an instant-read ther-mometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh without touching bone registers 165°F, 30 to 45 minutes more.
7. Transfer the turkey to a large cutting board; let rest for 20 minutes before removing the string and carving.
8. Meanwhile, pour any pan juices and fat into a large glass measuring cup and place in the freezer until the fat rises to the top, about 10 minutes. Whisk flour with 1/4 cup water in a small bowl.
9. Set the roasting pan over two burners on medium heat. Add wine (or vermouth); bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits. Continue cooking until reduced, about 3 minutes.
10. Remove the pan juices from the freezer, skim off the fat with a spoon and discard. Add the defatted juices and broth to the roasting pan; return to a simmer, whisk often. Cook for 1 minute, then whisk in the flour mixture and simmer until thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Pour the gravy through a fine-mesh sieve and serve with turkey.

The Wayne Rose Family
The Healthcare Foundation re-ceived a Wayne Rose Memorial and asked that the funds go to-wards something that would benefit the Edwards County Hospital Nurs-ing Department. They donated an electric recliner, two IV pumps, a fan and a flat screen television which is mounted on the wall of the outpatient room. This makes the time to receive a treatment more tolerable and comfortable.

Edwards County Hospital (ECH) staff celebrated Rita Horton’s 18 years of service as a Medical Technologist and Laboratory Director on August 29, 2012. Rita spent more than 45 years of her life as a Medical Technolo-
gist. After her retirement, Rita plans to do some of her main projects like arts and crafts. She will finish scrapbooks with childhood memories for each one of her kids. Rita’s hobbies are playing the pi-ano, sewing and spending time with her grandkids. When asked if she had any-thing to say, she said “I ap-preciate all the support from the staff and the communi-ty”. We at ECH appreciate Rita’s dedication and hard work. Pedro Luchavez Jr. has tak-en over as Laboratory Direc-tor. He’s been with ECH Lab for 5 years and has been a Medical Technologist for over 14 years. He took some courses in management, ad-ministration and teaching in preparation for management job. Pedro had been working with Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Interns here in ECH and Medical
Technology (MT) Interns back in the Philippines and was participating in the Phil-ippine Association for Medi-cal Technologist (PAMET) activities where he became a Committee on CPE Chair-man, Interim Secretary and Chapter President.
Some of Rita’s accomplish-ments while here include initiating the Men and Wom-en’s Health Fairs. She also updated the laboratory ser-vices by adding more tests to our laboratory including: drug testing, breath alcohol test-ing, diabetes monitoring, testing for blood clots, testing for congestive heart failure and molecular testing.
We will continue Rita’s lega-cy by offering the Annual Men and Women’s Health Fairs. Her hard work and dedica-tion to our hospital will be missed.

busy chasing after her 2 year old son, Josh, with Zac’s help of course. They are all very excited about being closer to extended family, especially Josh who is enjoying special attention from his grandparents!
Lisa and her family are looking forward to meeting more members of the com-munity and getting involved in local activities. After be-ing raised in small commu-nities themselves, Zac and Lisa are looking forward to raising a family in the heart of rural Kansas.
