Who is Edward Steichen?

• Born on March 27, 1879, in Luxembourg• Died on March 25, 1973• American photographer, painter, and art gallery and

museum curator• A self-taught master of photography in a pictorial approach• Helped Alfred Stieglitz in creating the Little Galleries of the

Photo-Secession• Organized the famous Family of Man exhibition• Became one of the best known portraitists in the world

A Little Bit More of Steichen"Edward Steichen was introduced to Stieglitz in 1900 and was an early supporter of the fight to have photography recognized as a fine art.

•Steichen served as the Director of Aerial Photography during WWI.•In 1922, he also became the Art Director for the Condé Nast publications for 16 years•In 1947, he became the Director of thePhotography Department at the Museum of Modern Art, where he organized “The Family of Man”•“The Family of Man” is the most influential photographic exhibition in history which travelled all over the world for decades

Horst, Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn• Hoyningen-Huene is one of photography’s early

practitioners in necromancy• “Horst set out to create a parallel aspirational universe in

which his subjects became mysterious and alluring,” (Pepper)

• Avedon helped make photography an contemporary art form

• Penn “. . . advanced the genre of portraiture. His formal rigor, graphic daring, and studied simplicity. . .” (Gefter)

Horst’s photos are elegant and stylish. His method was to carefully prepare lighting and props in arrangement.
