Lord of the Mountains was the title given to an exhibition of mountain scenes painted by Edward Holroyd Pearce and shown

in a gallery at Chur in Switzerland in 1977. Edward was a compulsive painter of mountains and this love grew from the time he spent convalescing from TB in Montana in 1932. From his bed in the sanatorium he could see the opaque green waters of the Rhine, the sunlit upper slopes of the Ilhorn, the gleaming Weisshorn and in the distance the whole army of peaks as far as the massif of Mont Blanc. To Edward their beauty was like a healing touch and although he did travel widely in Switzerland he never found a place to equal Montana and Crans.

The mantle of “talented amateur” is often used to describe artists who for whatever reason have not made selling their paintings

their only means of financial survival. Lord Pearce of Sweethaws was a distinguished Law Lord, Lord Justice of Appeals and a privy councillor, whose talent as an artist was recognised from an early age but is only now being shown to a wider audience. This, our second exhibition focuses on the artist’s passion for the mountains.

Pearce, a Law Lord, painter and collector was the son -in -law of the celebrated artist Bertram Priestman and friend and travelling companion of Edward Seago (1910 -1974). Their frequent trips as the painting trio, travelling in Seago’s Austin Seven, were a period of great productivity for the young Pearce and inspired him in the true tradition of ‘en plein air’ painting.
