Why a multimodal format?

We chose this multimodal format because:

1. the conference is taking place after the scheduled dates;

Page 2: EDUNINE 2020 VIRTUAL Starting April 13 2020 EDUNINE 2020 ... · 1 EDUNINE2020 Virtual Program EDUNINE 2020 VIRTUAL Starting April 13th 2020 The EDUNINE 2020 Virtual Conference will

2. most of the universities have already started running their classes remotely due to COVID-19. Our authors are professors working with the tools and resources to create the best experience for their students while locked at their home. The EDUNINE2020 Moodle platform allows the authors to attend all the technical sessions and recorded plenary sessions and workshop, and interacting with other authors, at the times they have available, without altering their programmed activities and allowing them to share their resources with their families;

3. we want to address the claim of some authors who wanted an online congress, that is, to have the opportunity to interact directly with the presenters, as in a face-to-face congress. The Blackboard platform allows authors attend to the workshop and the IEEE Cisco Webex platform to some plenary sessions as live events, interacting with the presenter and other authors present at the same time. Invitations will be sent to all authors for participation. Moreover, it gives us the possibility to feel that we're sharing some time together as if we were at the face-to-face conference;

4. we want to make responsible use of the Internet during this emergency. In particular, we do not want to exclude those who cannot connect due to technical problems at a given time, or who must do so at times that do not affect their professional and family activities;

5. we choose those tools that only need the equipment to which we all have access and that take care of the privacy of the authors personal data. Cisco WebEx from IEEE and Moodle from EDUNINE are very simple to use and require no more than a computer/tablet/cell phone and an Internet connection.

ENJOY THE CONFERENCE AND WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO MEET ALL OF

YOU AT THE EDUNINE 2020 LIVE EVENTS!

transfer- Paper# 326

Daniel Morano, Roberto Giordano Lerena Global Engineering Education with local relevance requires the consideration and articulation of scientific, economic, social and cultural aspects and the necessities of society. This represents a great challenge for Engineering degree courses. The curricularization of the activities carried out by students in research projects, technological development, extension or transfer as an Integrating Project or Supervised Professional Practice can strongly contribute to the development of the expected students’ competencies in the level of development reached and with the desired orientation while integrating the University’s substantive functions making an impact and fostering a sense of belonging to the community on graduated students. This paper describes the analysis of the conditions that should be met before the activity of these students in the mentioned projects could be curricularly recognized and meet the requirements of an Integrating Project or Supervised Professional Practice. Some defined competencies in the engineering profile and tools for its certification are presented as examples. Speakers: Daniel Elso Morano, Roberto Giordano Lerena

Plenary III

Chair; Claudio R. Brito Plenary: From traditional to active mathematics courses: breaking the paradigm in Guatemala-

Paper# 515. (Spanish) Jose Roberto Portillo In developing countries, such as Guatemala, most students lack a solid high school education in mathematics. Moreover, due to the economic situation, each year more freshmen students combine college with a full-time job position. As a result, offering academic support for first-year college students is not an option for universities with engineering schools. Therefore, to reduce dropout rates and increase the academic performance of the freshmen engineering students, Universidad Galileo has put a lot of effort and resources in education research, in particular, oriented towards the freshmen engineering mathematics courses. Our research odyssey began with the design of an innovative supplementary mathematics course, called Mathematics Operatory Skills Laboratory (MOSL), created to fulfill the particular necessities of our students. The freshmen students were segregated into two groups using a diagnostic test, where the lowest-ranked were enrolled in the MOSL. With this effort, even though we could not level up the two groups of study, we were able to reduce the academic breach between them by 34%. The MOSL results guided our attention to a particular group, the part-time students, whose attendance and performance began to differ significantly from those enrolled as full-time students. Therefore, we designed and implemented a different teaching methodology for such a group, based on Team-based learning (TBL), called Guided-Lecture Team-Based Learning (GL-TBL). The academic results of the GL-TBL implementation were encouraging, the percentage of students who passed the course following the GL-TBL format was around 70%. The obtained results lead us to introduce active learning methodologies in all the sections of the first-year engineering mathematics courses, and nowadays, in almost all the courses taught by the Department of Mathematics. We designed and implemented active learning methodologies, such as the Active Topic Centered Learning (ATCL), which reinforces the link between mathematics and engineering via problem-solving, mini application projects, and the minimization of the time invested in lectures. The pass rates obtained using ATCL are above 60%, indicating a significant improvement in the academic performance of our students. Finally, we also found that a group of motivation sub-scales, included in the Motivation and Learning Strategies Questionnaire (MSLQ), had higher average scores, compared with the obtained in traditional lecture-based mathematics courses. This is the time that we recognize the valuable accomplishments of peers who worked hard for science, technology and education and the best papers of the conferencehis paper is about a recent endeavor of IEEE Education Society - the IEEE World Engineering Education Conference – EDUNINE that has the goal to happen in Region 9, Latin America. Chair: Maria Feldgen Plenary: The New ARCU-SUR Regional Accreditation Standards Paper# 513

Roberto Giordano Lerena, Daniel Morano From the Experimental Mechanism for Accreditation of Degree Programs (MEXA) to the current Permanent MERCOSUR Regional Accreditation Mechanism (ARCU-SUR), the voluntary regional accreditation system has been evolving and adjusting to the new demands and realities of the degree programs and the political guidelines of the Mercosur block. In May 2019, the Network of National Accreditation Agencies of MERCOSUR approves the new regional standards for engineering, including Biomedical, Biological, Environmental and Computer Science / Systems Engineering. This required the redefinition of some criteria and the introduction of the concept of "families of degree programs" with common characteristics in the regional standard. This plenary exposes the background of the regional accreditation process, the process of adaptation of the current standards and the novelties and outstanding characteristics of the recently approved standard, which incorporates computer science / systems engineering to all the accredited degree programs at the regional level. Computing Curricula- Paper# 341

Beatriz Florian-Gaviria, Itana Maria Gimenes, Héctor Cancela, Ernesto Cuadros-Vargas, John Impagliazzo Computing Curricula 2005 (CC2005) and the developing 2020 version (CC2020) are the international referents of undergraduate computing education. ACM and IEEE-CS efforts to offer a global classification of computing curricula programs recommending subjects based on a competency-based curricula design. Latin America (LA) is an active region in computing education. However, it is difficult to understand how LA computing programs relate to the CC2020 competency-based approach. This panel seeks to provide the current landscape of undergraduate LA computing curricula in comparison to the CC2020. The intention is to highlight differences and commonalities in nomenclature, types of computing programs, curricula management, and accreditation. The panel will raise the discussion concerning the challenges for computing programs in the LA region surrounding curricula transformation towards a better understanding of programs at international level. Audience involvement and panelist interactions promise to generate a shared understanding of undergraduate computing programs in LA and their global perspective. Speakers: Hector Cancela, Beatriz Eugenia Florian Gaviria, Itana Maria de Souza Gimenes
