Welcome to Week 8 and what we hope will be four weeks remaining of our first term. In these uncertain times with COVID-19, I am constantly being updated on advice and recommendations to manage the school. This advice will be communicated to you frequently via the Skoolbag App or by a letter sent home with your child.

The next three weeks we have parent / teacher interviews operating for Years 1 - 6. Hopefully you have logged on and booked in a time to talk with your child’s teacher. If there are no times available that fit with your schedule then please contact your teacher to see about an alternative time.

Year 6 families – you would have received an Expression of Interest form last week for high school placement 2021. Forms are due back by this Friday 20th March. This applies to all students regardless of whether they intend to go to Blaxland High or not. Please ensure that you return the forms by the due date.

Finally, over the past week or so it has been brought to my attention that a number of our K-2 students are playing in the toilet area. Could you please discuss with your child that playing in school toilets is not acceptable behaviour and promotes poor hygiene habits.

School photos have been booked for Monday 23rd March.

The pre-printed envelopes have already been sent home. It is very important that all children return these envelopes to school on our photo day, even if the payment is included in a sibling’s envelope or payment has been made online.

Family photo envelopes are available from the office. Unused envelopes should also be returned to school.

The SRC will be holding a fundraiser in Week 9 Wednesday 25th March for ‘Beyond Blue’ The theme will be dress as a local hero for a gold coin donation.

Beyond Blue is an Australian independent non-profit organisation working to address issues associated with depression, suicide, anxiety disorders and other related mental disorders.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Between Tuesday 12th May and Friday 22nd May, our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.

Library News

Book club was finally issued to all students last week. If you wish to place an order please do so by Friday of this week.

As of last Friday, 12 students have completed the PRC. What an amazing effort! All primary students are making good progress on their reading records in class.

A big thank you to those families who have recently donated books to the library.

I am seeking some extra parents who could cover books at home. If this is something you feel you could do please contact me.

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

On Friday March 20th, Mt Riverview PS will join the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.

Lessons will be taught to reinforce that bullying is not acceptable and what needs to be done if anyone in our school feels uncomfortable or bullied.

The staff will speak to the children about being an ‘upstander’ rather than being a bystander. Grip Leadership Conference

On the 3rd March, Year 6 attended the GRIP Student Leadership Conference where we learnt about the duties of a good leader and what leadership is really all about.

We travelled to the Quay Centre at Sydney Olympic Park. When we got to the stadium we sat down and on each seat were conference booklets you had to complete throughout the sessions. The conference was divided into 3 sessions and 4 key topics, Leading the Way, Generosity, Ideas to Lead the Way and Bringing Your Idea to Life. There were several speakers that explained what makes a good leader and how to be a good leader.

The conference was fantastic, it was amusing, fun, interactive as well as being exciting and educational. Year 6 enjoyed this day and had so much fun. The GRIP Student Leadership conference has helped us become even better leaders.

Year 3 and 4 excursion –

Australian Botanic Gardens Mount Anan

In Week 7, 3/4V and 3/4S went on an excursion to the Australian Botanic Gardens in Mount Annan for our science unit, Living Things. We took part in many activities and learned lots of things on the day. Some of those things included seeing the Wollemi Pine, which is endangered and is also called the Dinosaur tree because it is so old. We completed a seed dispersal experiment to see how a seed spreads in different modes. We also saw a lady scientist opening plants and getting the seeds out and putting the healthy ones in a basket to be put into the seed vault to store them. Seeds are kept in a seed vault to save plant species from extinction. Even though it was raining we went on a bush walk and saw a large ant nest, a rabbit hole and a wild bee hive. Unfortunately the parklands were flooded so we had to turn back. We also toured the plant bank which is similar to a bank but it holds plants instead of money. Lastly, we were divided into groups and given a box, a sifter and a shovel to dig and sift out some Pink Clusters Everlasting (Schoenia Cassiniana) seeds, which we got to take home. A really interesting part of this excursion was learning about the Wollemi Pine and that this species has been living for 200 million years. I would recommend the Australian Botanic gardens, a nice peaceful place to visit even on rainy days. Thank you to Mrs Voyles and Ms Stockton for taking us.

Anahi 3/4V Teddy Bears Picnic

KB and KS had a Teddy Bears Picnic to celebrate the letter “T”. We invited our Year 6 buddies and their teddies, too. We played games and sang some songs together. We all shared lunch with our teddies. We had a great time.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

Our Term 1 interviews commenced this week for some teachers and will continue over the next two weeks.

This year we are using the online booking process again. A Skoolbag message was sent home with the booking code. If you need this booking code again please contact the office.

Booking an interview is a simple process:

3. Follow the onscreen prompts to book an interview.

The interviews this term are not compulsory and are intended to give a quick snapshot of where your child is at present time and what will be worked on over the coming terms. If you believe you will need a longer session than what is timetabled please contact your child’s teacher via the school office and discuss an alternative time.

School Banking

School banking operates every Wednesday. The mums who coordinate the program are set up in their regular place under the COLA. For those families wishing to commence student banking please have a chat with them. Mount Riverview Play Group

Visitors to the School ALL visitors to the school are required to visit the office before going to one of our classrooms or contacting students in the playground.

If your child is arriving late or leaving early please remember to go to the office to receive an early leaving / arriving late slip which is then given to the teacher. If there are any questions then please contact the office. Family Contact Details

At the beginning of each year we ask families to ensure that their contact details are accurate, which include email address and mobile numbers. Thank you to those families who have already updated their details.

Accurate information is extremely important in the event that we have to contact you regarding your child or in the event that we have to declare a catastrophic fire warning during bushfire season.

Mt Riverview Public School AGM President’s Report for 2020 This is a great school and by being on the P&C it is a wonderful way you can contribute to your child’s schooling and have an involvement in the decision-making processes that enhance not only your child, but also all the children at the school this year and the years to come! I have enjoyed being the president for the past year and had the privilege of leading the P&C and the team behind the scenes into a strong and positive direction forward in the past year. Being part of the P&C has helped with getting to know new parents and getting to know the finer details of what is happening inside the classrooms and with the teachers. Now for the thanks! Firstly, I would like to thank the fantastic volunteers, without your help we could not have run the school’s P&C. Everyone played a vital role in supporting us, including the people who could not make the P&C meetings but helped in other ways. We all know who you are. Also a big thanks to Year 6 for assisting with the games and activities at the back to school BBQ. I would also like to thank everyone who took on more than one role this year in getting the P&C events up and running, the general running of the canteen, uniform pool and to anyone else I missed that has taken on many roles.

As we all know Mr Giles left the school late last year, but I would also like to thank him in his role as Principal for all the help he provided not only myself, but the P&C, parents, teachers and of course the students of this school. Now for the fundraising. This past year we have seen a number of fund raising activities, including: • Mothers’ day stall • First ever Mothers’ day BBQ • Easter Raffle • Two Election BBQ’s • Fathers’ day BBQ • Back to School BBQ • And other smaller ones held within the school With these fundraisers we were able to donate funds to the school for the new synthetic turf which is currently being installed at the school and also fund the Year 6 leadership conference. We also had a big change in the uniform pool where we have changed to an online shop with LW Reid. We have also been opening the 2nd hand uniform pool before P&C on a Tuesday. Thanks to all for the patience you have shown in getting uniforms with this change. In closing, I am looking forward to see what the P&C, the P&C team and the school has in store for 2020/2021. Financial Assistance is Available

Throughout the year we have several extra-curricula activities that are held approximately at the same time and have a similar cost each year. Examples include camps, overnight excursions, text books, gymnastics program, swim school, etc.

For various reasons this may become an issue for families within our school. There are however a couple of ways to tackle this issue and to help lessen the burden many of our families feel, especially if they have more than one child at school.

The most popular option used in 2019, was to work out a payment plan with Mr Giles, spread across the desired number of weeks, covering all associated costs within that time frame. This option is becoming more popular because it spreads the costs out over easy fortnightly payments rather than having a few major costs at different points of the year.

If this sounds like something you would like to look into, or if parents require any assistance with school related expenses, please contact Mr Simone or your child’s class teacher. All enquiries are confidential.

School Entry and Exits

For safety reasons we ask that all students (and visitors to the school) enter and exit the school using one of the three pedestrian gates. There are two on Rusden Road and one on Blackbutt Circuit. Entering and exiting the school via one of the carparks is not a safe practice as we have delivery vehicles using all three driveway entrances at various times each day.

Residents in Students Lane have also requested that people who park in the lane in the morning or afternoons please not park across driveways as residents use the lane to access their properties.

Finally, when crossing Rusden Road outside of the school please use the pedestrian crossing thereby setting a good example for all of our students.

Absent From School?

If you child is away from school a note explaining the reason of the absence is required to be sent to school within 7 days of them returning to school. If an absence remains unexplained after this period then a letter will be sent home asking for an explanation of the absence.

There is a feature available within our SkoolBag app which allows parents to send the absent note straight away. If you would like to be shown how this works please visit the office for a “test drive”.

Changes have been made to the way extended family trips or holidays taken during the school term are recorded. A certificate of exemption is no longer issued for such trips and the days will be counted as absences. Obviously, special circumstances do arise from time to time and will be looked at when they occur.

If a student has high absenteeism during the school year a referral will be made to the Home School Liaison Officer.

The focus of the fortnight at present is:

'What does it mean to Be Respectful at Mt Riverview Public School'?

The children have been receiving many warins and have started achieving their class rewards. They are getting very close to achieving their whole school reward of having a zooper dooper iceblock.

Attached to this newsletter is an outline of our reward system at Mt Riverview PS and a copy of our matrix and flowchart to explain how our warins and referral slips work.

Anaphylaxis – a shared responsibility

Being the start of a new school year it is just the right time to remind everyone about anaphylaxis and what we can do as a school community for the families that have to deal with this.

We now have several students at our school who have varying degrees of allergic reaction to nuts and mango in particular. Currently, our student reactions can range from mild allergies to severe reactions which can quickly become life threatening.

For this reason we ask (as much as possible) that nuts are not brought to school, which includes peanut butter, nut spreads (nutella), and nut bars.

Obviously, being able to do this is sometimes difficult or at times simply forgotten. With this in mind we implement hygiene procedures at school to try and eliminate as much as possible the likelihood of an allergic reaction occurring.

The procedures taught to students at school are:

a) washing hands before and after eating; b) washing hands at the end of each play period; c) using the sanitising spray which are being installed in classrooms upon entering and leaving the room.

The inconvenience to some children is recognised and their cooperation appreciated, but the consequences to children with anaphylaxis are extremely serious.

All members of our school community are asked to be aware of the dangers of even the slightest contact with nuts for these children.

To help minimise the risk, simply washing hands and cleaning teeth before coming to school would really help.

School Voluntary Contributions

Each year the school asks families to consider paying the voluntary contribution if they are in a position to do so. Money raised with the voluntary contributions is used to help provide additional funding for programs that the school runs. Voluntary contributions for 2019 are $49 per student or $80 per family.

Important COVID-19 Update Dear Parents and Caregivers, The information and advice regarding the COVID-19 is updating regularly and I feel it fitting to communicate some changes through to you to ensure you have the full information that I currently have at hand. Please note that Mount Riverview Public School is currently operational, however, we are putting measures in place to support students’ learning from home if this were to change in the future. Please note that if your child is feeling sick or unwell it is imperative that you do not send them to school. At Mount Riverview Public School we are spending a great deal of time discussing with the students;

• Correct procedures for washing their hands • Coughing or sneezing into a tissue or their elbow • Communicating to their parents or teachers if they are feeling unwell

As the landscape regarding COVID-19 is changing so frequently I have made the decision to postpone certain activities and events within our school. These are as follows;

• School morning assemblies have been postponed until further notice • Paul Kelly Cup AFL competition has been postponed until further notice • All PSSA sporting competitions have been postponed until further notice • Friday Primary Assembly for Week 8 is cancelled as is the Captains’ Assembly in Week 10 • Scripture & Ethics sessions have been paused and on hold until further notice • Parent helpers in the classroom have been paused and on hold until further notice • Playgroup on Wednesday morning has been paused and on hold until further notice • Film by the Eucalypts Gala Day on Friday 27th has been postponed until further notice • ANZAC Day Service is cancelled and Pedlars’ Parade is postponed until further notice

I realise that these changes impact every family within our school and anticipate that you understand the need to reduce the activities within the school to ensure we all remain healthy and safe. I encourage us all to remain calm and be assured that every measure that can be taken to reduce the spread of this virus is being taken by the school. Currently, at Mount Riverview Public School, I have not been informed of any confirmed cases of COVID-19 within our school community. I appreciate your time and understanding regarding this matter. Mt Riverview PS Reward System The students at Mt Riverview PS are expected to act according to the school’s values of Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner, as outlined in the positive behaviour matrix.

1. Mt Riverview Reward/Sticker Chart *Each student receives a Mt Riverview reward chart at the beginning of each year which is kept in a class folder within the room. *The children earn Mt Riv stickers from staff to be placed on to their chart. Gold Award = 25 Mt Riv stickers School Banner = 50 Mt Riv stickers School Medallion = 75 Mt Riv stickers When they have their quota of Mt Riv’s for the above awards they take the sheet to the Principal who makes a note and they will be presented with their award at the next Whole School/Captains Assembly.

2. PBL token- Warin (Playground) *Students who follow our core values will be issued a ‘Warin’. *Tokens are acknowledged on a class list / chart and then placed in the playground PBL box in the classroom. *A Mt Riv will be given to the child for every 5 Warins that they receive. *Monday morning, each class will take the PBL box to assembly where two Warins will be drawn from each box. The children will receive a Mt Riv sticker to be placed onto their sticker chart. *All Warins will go into a container to earn a whole school reward.

3. PBL token- Warin (Classroom) *Students who follow our core values will be issued a ‘Warin’. *Tokens are acknowledged on a class list / chart and then placed in the class PBL box in the classroom. *A Mt Riv will be given to the child for every 5 Warins that they receive. *The class will decide on a whole class reward for when they have reached a marker on their class box.
